USAMO

I’ve been overly stressing about getting into college, and what I can improve on to get into Berkeley.
I am out of state, which makes things harder, but I still want to try.

I attend one of the MOST competitive highschools in Atlanta.
I have taken the hardest classes possible that the school offers. [our school has no IB, and we can only take a given selection of AP classes each year]

GPA [I know, it’s pretty bad, but I’m planning on increasing it greatly]: 3.7 UW
Weighted [if I am correct, because of all my AP’s and Gifted Classes]- 4.41

PSAT: 190 [NO studying] I am taking SAT in june, and I am studying a great amount. I plan on getting ATLEAST a 2050 the first time.
Plan on taking 2-3 SAT II tests. [World History, Biology, and Math]

that is basically it.
sorry for the horrible GPA, I know it means a lot, but I am also taking all the hardest courses. If I were just takin simple honors or CP classes, I would have a 4.0 with ease. [but my weighted GPA would be the same too…]

I personally hope for the best, and I would absolutely die with happiness if I got into UC Berkeley.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

Oh, forgot to add.

Junior year schedule:

AP Biology
AP Physics
AP Us History
Gifted Precal [gifted is a level higher than honors… and we couldnt take AP precal, because there’s no such thing in our school]
Gifted Lang
French 2 Honors
Possibly Symphonic Orchestra

In my opinion, your GPA is a very significant portion of your application. I know friends with sub-par SAT scores get into Berkeley with really nice GPAs. RahulS, keep in mind that UC’s only look at your sophomore and junior grades, and they calculate those grades into a UC GPA, which only allows for 8 extra points total for honors courses.

Try to get those grades up and score some sweet SAT scores (holy crap alliteration).

I’m a junior from a competitive high school (in top 50 in nation). My grades have a general pattern of improvement- all A’s this year!

Cali resident
UC GPA: 3.77 UW
4.136 W
GPA: 3.627 UW (inc freshmen year)
3.856 W
3.792 UW (without freshmen)
4.125 W
Doesn’t include college classes, which should bring it up.
Many AP and Honors classes. Most strong in math and sciences.

SAT: 730 CR, 740 W, 770 M (total: 2240) planning to retake
Math ii: 800 Bio: 800

Extracurriculars:
Ethnic Folk Dance- since age 4 (competitive- won first place many time, went up to international level)
Ethnic Vocal- since 3rd grade
Tae Kwon Do- black belt
Art- mainly painting
Volunteer work
Active in a religious organization

I also had a very serious medical problem in freshmen year which prevented me from attending school for about 5 months, hence the gpas without freshmen year.

Thanks!

RahulS You have a ton of ecs! Thats great. But you have to have a great GPA. Some of my friends who got in for class of 2013 had really high GPAs but not so great SATs and ecs. But thats just a few people. I generally get the feeling that UCs are more number based. Like they guarantee the top 10%(?) of Cali students in a UC.

GPA (10-11):

WGPA 4.2

-I will most likely take around 4 AP classes my Senior year

I want to go to Berkeley or Harvey Mudd, and I have UCSD as a back up as of now.

Although there are many factors, I want to go to a prestigious school, one that is good in Engineering, and is not so stressful that Id be miserable ( a hard workload is inevitable.)

I know I don’t have crazy amazing stats like the other Berkeley applicants on here, but let me know what you think!

Please add suggestions of what I should do to get into UC Berkeley, considering the information I have given. Thanks! :]

__

@fiesta of fire: Aren’t you a senior? And just so you know it’s just about impossible for your UC GPA weighted to be .6+ above your UC Unweighted, so I thiunk you might have that wrong

no clue, numbers are from my counselor.

and is uc unweighted the same as just unweighted?

and doesn’t matter anymore, I’m in :D

^Yeah, I didn’t think it mattered for you anymore, but I just wanted to mention that because I got really confused by that too. When I meant UC Unweighted, I just meant 10-11. But take those raw numbers before dividing by # of classes and add 8 for 8 semesters, which is the max and then divide by # of classes and that will give you the weighted GPA.

Please leave me some comments! :X

@ngstar3125: Your stats are impressive and in my opinion you have a very good chance of getting in. It might help to get some clubs on your loist of EC’s and to be an officer of those clubs. Also, Berkeley does mostly look at your UC GPA for 10-11 grade, but I have heard they will also look at your entire set of grades, so make sure to mention your problem that you had during freshman year if you’re worried.

Your stats are way better than mine though and I got in this year, but then again I am on of the most surprising people to ever be accepted probably. My GPA is so low I chuckle at the fact that I got in

Hey! I was wondering what my chances of getting into Berkeley

Out of State (massachusetts)

gpa:
4.35/5
my school uses wierd out of 5 system. To put it into perspective, I got straight B-'s freshmen year in all honors-level classes ( I was lazy), B+'s with two A’s sophmore year, all honors and one AP (ap comp sci), and B+'s and one A junior year, all honors.

Berkely GPA: 4.1

Test scores:

SAT 1: 2300

Math: 760 Reading: 740: : writing: 800

SAT 2’s

Math 1 : 790
Pysics 1: 790

question: is math II requiered?

EC’s:
Robotics team: very active member, getting a rec about it from teacher advisor
President Magic the Gathering club, Board game club (I’m kinda a nerd)
Out of school Russian literature/drama/culture club (I’m a russian immigrant. Go to this class to remember my heritage/ languadge)
Play Violin

major: EECS

i’m applying for undergraduate admission later on this year, for the class of 2014, and i’m wondering what my chances are.
international student
SAT: 2170
class rank: pretty high, in an extremely competitive class/school
EC: active from year nine to eleven but not so much in year twelve
probably going to get pretty good recommendations.

Give us some more details

Blackroses:

What is your class rank first off? Are you at the top 5% of your class? Keep your GPA up. Take as make honors/college classes as you possibly can (Like the chemistry/computer classes this summer :))

Your changes look ok for engineering. I would want to bring that 2150 SAT score highet; it’s kind of on the low side (you would want to have above average stats!), and bring that unweighted GPA up even more if you can. You would actually want to have 750+ on your SATIIs (especially since they are both major related).

I would weed out some of your ECs if you can. It looks pretty scattered, and there are only so many ECs you can put on your app. Cut yourself some slack and stick to 3-5 that are most important to you. Especially for Berkeley, your non-academic related ECs might not matter that much. But if you are really passionate about them, by all means, go for them!

My only other suggestion is to start brainstorming for essay topics. I might not be so helpful with things related to your major, but my essay writing skills are pretty darn good, I must confess:) (please don’t take me for some conceited a-hole…lol). So if you need any help with that, or want me to look over your UC essays (because they are pretty important in the application process), I’d be more than happy to do that. Just pm me.

Good luck next year and good luck on your SATs, SATIIs and the rest of your APs! :)

As a sample – one of my EECS roommates had a 2300+ SAT, took basically all the AP classes he could – all the AP sciences, one year of AP history, two of AP English, etc, etc, had close to perfects on all SAT II’s. Plus, he’s an EECS know-it-all who’s very humble about it

Definitely have high numbers though. I know a lot of standardized testing is BS, but it’s what they have to go off of, and especially in a public school, I think your numbers being good is specially important.

Gosh mathboy, don’t scare the gal!!! lol

However, what he said about numbers is true, but you don’t have to aim this high!!! I would be so terrified if I saw that last year and think that this is what I have to get in order to get into Berkeley. So don’t get the wrong idea. I think mathboy is trying to stress on the importance of numbers, but really, if you get in the mid 2200 (which is definitely doable if you put in the effort of studying from prep books/classes) and get your GPA higher w/ ur AP classes, you should have a decent shot.

A counter story (that you have heard but just for the sake of this post…): one of my friends who was accepted to EECS had <2100 SAT, okay SATIIs, low end of 5% rank (this is really important btw. You really need to get in that 5% range and stay there if you haven’t already…I would highly doubt that EECS would accept non ELC students–top of 4 or 5% of the class…I don’t really remember which). Remember that he also had a great internship at Scripps (I think it was bioinformatics stuff)

But higher numbers are definitely better for your chances. I just want you to be aware that you don’t have to have insanely high numbers :)
