I’ve been tearing myself up debating whether to apply Engineering or not, because I don’t have a lot of science-oriented ECs, and I’ve only taken AP Bio, AP Chem, and Honors Physics (chose a fourth year of orchestra over AP Phys). Would I have a chance at Engineering Undecided, or should I just stick with L&S? Thanks :)

Phiz10…with those stats you’re in for sure.

UC GPA: 4.42
My high school uses a 0-100 scale and does not convert to a 4.0 (I have a 93.08 UW but my school does not weight GPAs at all. Also, I am not sure what that converts to because there are many conversion methods. College Board, for example, says a 93-100 is a 4.0)

I lack the community service…I probably have less that 50 hours under my belt throughout high school. I’m not sure how much this weighs on my application. To name one activity, I volunteered at a nursing home weekly in the spring (totaled to 24 hours)

Oh, and I’m not sure what effect this has, but I’m a white male. Chance me?

Hey, coming in late, but oh well:

Berkeley is the one UC that does read the letters of recommendation. The ECs are really important. Most students were President of this, that or the other thing before applying.

You still need the numbers. The average GPA for 2009 was 4.15, weighted. They rejected some perfect GPA and perfect SAT score students, though, and you need more than the numbers. Lots of AP scores of 5 help.

What? According to the Cal rep that came to my school, they shred any and all recs that they get. Submitting one is pretty useless.

relax manning you are in

for sure benson

Yeah, Berkeley does not consider recommendations at all. They don’t want anything sent from your high school. All they want to see is the information in the application you submitted to them. They don’t even want a transcript. The only thing you need to send after the application is an official test score report

On my essays:
I talked about (for the essay about the ‘world’) how I am Indian (both parents are immigrants) and about how although my family is very traditional, I have adapted to American culture and have drawn the best aspects from each, creating a unique individuality. I also talked about how the traditional Indian male’s goal is to get a good job and provide for his family and how, being influenced by American society, my goals are loftier; I talked about how I want to make a large impact on the world and how I can use the facilities at Cal Berkeley, including the student body, to make these changes.

For the second essay, I chose to write about an experience: I wrote about a Robot Competition that my Engineering Physics class was part of and talked about how the experience allowed me to learn about hard work and teamwork. I also discussed the flaws of our project and about how we were not organized. I parlayed this into a paragraph about how I have learned to become a better leader and have realized that in order to organize a group, I must be able to take criticism for better or for worse in order to advance the group - I also talked about how I can use the newfound leadership in order to be a leading figure in the Cal student body.

By the way, I applied to Nuclear Engineering for all that it’s worth. If I do not get into Nuclear Engineering, will I be referred to another program or will I just be rejected?

Thanks and Please reply/chance me!
