The Official Chances Thread!

that’s supposed to be a sad face after my SAT scores
):

Can I get a really quick chance (by objective stats only)? I’m currently a high school junior, and am trying to figure out which schools I can classify as reaches/matches/safeties, and I’m wondering whether UCB would be considered a reach or a match for me. Thanks in advance!

Location: California (by way of Michigan and Singapore) – I’ll be living in CA during my senior year, although I spent junior year in MI and 9th and 10th grades in Singapore
Race: Chinese
Gender: Female
Citizenship: Canadian (but applied for U.S. permanent resident status; application status still pending)
Financial Aid: No*
Prospective Major: German (with a minor in Political Science)*

*Although I’m a non-U.S. citizen, I won’t be applying for FA at Berkeley, and I’m also going for a relatively rare major. I believe this helps my chances a little.

Unweighted GPA: 3.8 (grades 9-10)
Class rank: N/A; estimated to be in top 10% out of 280 students at first HS and in top 25% out of 85 students at current HS (ultra-competitive school; I could be ranked higher though)
Course load: Most rigorous
SAT I: 2290 (700 CR, 800 M, 790 W) for now; retaking in June for 2300+
EC’s: Foreign language (9-12); piano (9-12); writing (9-12); church youth group (9-12). Won’t post details to protect privacy, but have earned significant honors and distinctions (some on the international/national levels) in each EC.
Other information: Attended 3 different high schools in 4 years
Academic Honors: National Merit Semifinalist

I’m not the most qualified person to judge but I think you have a very good shot a getting in. Your SAT is very good and your ECs are decent. Because you’re applying for German it would mean you’d be applying to L&S which I believe is easier to get into then CoC or CoE, however it is no easier than other majors within the college. I’m not sure how to judge your GPA, which I personally believe is the weakest part at the moment, but keeping your grades high this year would only help. However if you write a good essay and really show off your ECs then I think it’s a match. Though once again I’m not the most qualified person to judge, and college admissions can be really random/strange at times.

Thanks so much scotto3394! :)

deep breath Well, here goes…my first ever chances post. =P

Chinese-American Female

UC GPA: 4.33 (thru end of junior year)
Unweighted GPA: 4.00
Weighted GPA:
Freshman thru Junior - 4.3415
Sophomore thru Junior - 4.5185
Freshman thru Senior - 4.4727
Sophomore thru Senior - 4.6341

Out-Of-State

SAT Reasoning Scores (by section)
CR - 730
M - 770
Wr - 800

SAT II Scores
Chinese - 800
Literature - 800
World History - 770
…eh, I intend to take Spanish, too, just for fun. Possibly even after college decisions are out…I just want to see what my score would be. =P

College - Letters and Science

List a few of your most important ECs (a laundry list of 20+ items is not needed):
– already have had officer positions or predict officer positions in these clubs/organizations: Mu Alpha Theta, Spanish Club, Philosophy Club, an academic state champion team, possibly in NHS, too
– published writer and photographer – actually, I take a correspondence course specially designed for children’s writers =) – this course has taken…I would say at least 2500 hours over the past two and a half years
– around 300-400 volunteer hours by the end of this summer at a local library and medical center
– several choirs, including high regional ranking and voice lessons (1 yr)
– 9 years of piano (quitting senior year…I’ll really be far too busy)
– Summers: visiting China, visiting the Northeast, Governor’s School, a few state and national leadership camps/conferences (some are somewhat significant, others were very worthwhile and character-building but perhaps not all too prestigious)
– will likely (as in…someone will have to hurt me to convince me otherwise =P) start a program and/or a club/nonprofit next year/over the summer

Any other significant accomplishments in a specific field

 • skipped a grade? This was a long time ago, though.
 • Rank: 1 of ~750
 • National Merit Semifinalist (Idk if this is important, and I realize results haven’t come out yet, but I’m very sure)
 • full IB diploma student (eh…probably isn’t significant…but maybe?)

AP tests I will have completed by the end of high school:

 • World History (5), US History (predicted 5), Psychology (predicted 5), Statistics (predicted 5), Spanish, Calculus AB, Language & Composition (self-study…4 or 5), Literature (self-study next year), Macro & Microeconomics (self-study next year)

IB tests:

 • HL History of the Americas, HL Physics, HL English, SL Psychology (predicted 6-7), SL Math, SL Spanish (predicted 7)
 • IB is a very new program at my school…we’re only offered these 3 HL courses.

I guess my main problem is that I’m highly un-focused; I intend to major in philosophy or economics…but I haven’t been able to demonstrate any real passion. Granted, this is all a reflection of who I am–a formerly apathetic freshman, a super-enthusiastic sophomore interested in lots of different things, a rather stressed junior…and over all, someone who perhaps gives off the impression of a headless chicken at times. =P

To be honest, I’m really aiming for HYPS, Brown, and Williams (…yeah, I know it’s a total pipe dream…I’ll dream just a little longer, though…), but I’m applying to UChicago EA, UC Berkley, and possibly Duke, Vanderbilt, or WashU, since their decisions come out before 4/1. Then, provided I’m accepted to one of them, I at least won’t be scrambling in the spring to fill out applications for safety schools I’m not interested in attending (after all, I’d pick UChicago or UCBerkely over any safety).

Z,

Your in, don’t worry about it to much. The competition for oos is less now that the UC’s need more money

Also, your other schools are not pipe dreams. Just do something good this summer. CITY COLLEGE courses would be a very very good idea and make sure that it is in something that you are interested in.

My first ever chances post. D: Please tell me if I’m doing something wrong.

-California resident, Asian female, in my junior year

UC GPA: 4.23 (up to 1st semester, junior year)
Unweighted GPA: 3.86
Weighted GPA: 4.14
Rank: (for 1st semester junior year, 6/167 - top 5%)
*I go to a fairly rigorous high school that’s been nationally ranked in the last few years, but I’m not sure if this makes too much of a difference. Also, it has no IB program, so I don’t have those classes available.

SAT Reasoning Scores
CR - 770
M - 690
Wr - 770
*I’m taking this test again because of the math section. ><

SAT II Scores
Math II - 740/800 (took it twice)

 • piano (CM diploma in senior year)/cello (no real awards though, so probably not worth mentioning)
 • active in school speech and debate club
 • varsity girls’ golf for two years
 • volunteer work: Relay for Life (committee chair this year, team captain and participant in previous years), tutoring (both in Math Club and outside school, but less than 100 hours logged so far)

Any other significant accomplishments in a specific field

 • probably National Merit Semifinalist
 • possibly AP Scholar
 • a number of awards in debate on the regional level

 • senior year: AP Government, AP English Lit, AP Calc BC, AP Physics

My record is nowhere near stellar, I know; I also seem scattered when it comes to my ECs. If it helps, I’m interested in going into medicine, but would like to pursue journalism as either a minor or alternate career path. Dream schools include Stanford, Columbia, Harvard, JHU, and UCSD or USC Med (none of them are happening), but I’m also planning on applying to UCB (obviously, since I’m here), UCLA, UCI, UCD, and some smaller privates.

SAT: 2240 (800M)(680CR)(760W)
AP Tests: 4 4 5 5 US, World History, Chemistry, Russian
Senior Year taking AP BC Calculus and Physics C (Expecting 5 on both, easy subjects for me unlike History =/)

Over 300 hours volunteering at a retirement home helping people learn to use computers
Two summers spent working (for free lol) at a hospital in Israel
One year of Varsity Tennis and I have been playing tennis outside of school for about 5 years

Took a college level statistics course and got a 4.0 GPA in it

My dream school is MIT (haha) but I realize that I don’t have anything amazing in my application like Intel finalist or AIME.

I would like to go to a mathematics-oriented school so if you know any that can fit my stats please tell me!
I will chance back

Also NHS. I feel as if I am forgetting some things that could further benefit me

@ Blizza: I like your chances; your numbers are definitely strong. However, I can definitely tell you that math at Berkeley is exceptional. Easily in the top 10, if not top 5 in the nation.

Oops I just copied and pasted my post from my chances thread. I know Berkeley is an amazing math school and I’d love to go there.

IN-STATE RESIDENT

Major- Undeclared L+S, anyone want to recommend as easy major that can increase my chances of acceptance?

Essays: (i kind of integrated the 4 topics below into my two essays)

 1. when i was a freshman my parents got in an accident and i had to start taking care of my whole family. what i mean is that my chores got tripled, i needed to help my parents move through the house, and i had to walk my bro to school before i went. My school and his school are in 2 opposte directions. i also had to deal with my parent’s depression taking care of my brother for hours at time because they were at the psychiatrist
 2. i also wrote about how the envioronment i grew up in has shaped me to be a strong perservering leader and how people see me as a leader not because of my large frame ( i am 6’4) but because of the attidude i have when i am in the room.
 3. how my parents accident coupled with my volunteering at the hospital and retirement has changed my outlook on life and how i found my true calling which is medicine because God has blessed me with intelligence and lots of empathy towards the needy and weak.
 4. i also included in my essay a great quote from one of a famous surgeon (i am drawing a blank on his name right now) but it said " i was never the smartest in med school, but what i lacked in ability i made up with through discipline." i think this quote really applies to me and i explained why.

I was born in Canada, and I’m a chinese female.
Would writing my personal statement about my mom (she can’t move her tongue, she’s deaf, doesn’t speak English, and survived cancer and several major surgeries and has been a huge influence on me/who I am) and how she inspires me be a good idea? I’ve read that colleges don’t dig “dead grandmother” stories-- I’m just trying to show them more about me.

I’m also hoping for UCLA, Stanford (a stretch? eh), or even Davis/Irvine if I can’t get into Cal… any feedback would be appreciated! thanks. :)

You should be in at Davis/Irvine easy, most likely in at UCLA/Cal, but Stanford might be more of a reach.

Hi guys, seems like no one has been doing these so I’ll try to pick up the slack. Feel free to PM me if you don’t get responses after a while.

Also, we’re all just speculating here, no one really knows what your chances are. Whatever happens happens, so don’t stress too much.

aliceliu: good GPA, nice scores, good ECs, I’d say a 70-80% chance, getting a better SAT score will help you more. As for the essay: try to focus on how it’s impacted you and shaped you as a person, not just a sob story.

davidoga: I PMed you.

ClubSanwichGuy: good GPA, SAT score could be a little higher, ACT score is solid, ECs are okay, have you taken APs? I’d say about 50% chance.
