Were any other african americans accepted?

sigh I can't believe that bananaman and trancestorm were rejected.

So arbitrary!

Anyways, MIT Rejects should form an online MIT OCW study group. That would be so fun!

I'm in for that... :)

Btw,there's now a MIT Rejects Facebook group. =P

Hm though, the main problem with such a group would be that people's interests are so diverse that few would be in groups for upper-level classes. Though it would still be really nice for us to create a forum for anyone to discuss OCW. We could create an Invisionfree forum, but Invisionfree doesn't support LaTeX.

trancestorm, you were rejected? that's strange...

[/ul]
Any other comments: w007, but why hasn't EVERYBODY heard of MIT? Why do I get asked, "Oh?out in California?" Why do they think it?s some sort of vocational school where I'll learn how to fix computers?

This is kind of late, but I've just gotten over my depressed stage and feel enough strength post my stats with the last testing dates with up to date stuff. Sigh.

Here we go:

Waitlisted/Rejected.

International

Stats:

SAT I (by section): Too lazy; 2370, best combined after sittings.

SAT IIs: 800Math, 800WH, 800 in Physics after some sweat and toil.
I took others, but didn't do as well. Like, I got a 670 in physics the first time.

ACT: 34.

APs: 5 5's, 4 4's and one 3

IBs: None.

GPA, Weighted and Unweighted:4.0UW

Rank:~ 1/500

Senior Yr Courseload: Hardest

Number of Apps from Your School: 2

Other stats: Took the AMC/AIME. Not significant enough for MIT.

Subjective:

ECs listed on app: Bunches, many leadership positions, mostly Amnesty & Volunteer Work

Job/Work Experience: Not much; private tutoring.

Essays (subject and responses): Mediocre->Strong. Sort of pulled together at the last minute.

Teacher Recs: Glowing/Really good.

Counselor Rec: Glowing/Really good.

Interview (feel and general location): Decent. Nothing to tip the scale.

Hook (if any): Sucks to be asian and poor and international, what can I say?

Location/Person:

State or Country: South Korea

Ethnicity: Asian.

Gender: Female.

Hooks: Some state/regional math competitions, decided to graduate a year early.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Applied as math major, applied for FULL financial aid, too much international competition from Korea/Asia in general, no science fair, nothing national, nothing too extraordinary, mediocre essays, even.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Not good enough for MIT.

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
This sucks. AHH. Oh well, congrats to those accepted!

wow, kisstheskyxx, you're almost exactly identical to me!
hopefully next year i won't get rejected...
(same here, asian, international, poor, and also MALE)

Erick Fuentes and Hispanic Hottie, did you guys post your real stats/decisions? Because i've always dreamed of going to MIT but I've recently lost hope that I would be able to since my grades and PSATs(I'm a junior) are significantly lower than most of the people here who posted there were rejected. If you really were accepted, congratulations and maybe I'll be lucky and see you there in a few years :)

Decision: Waitlisted
Stats:

* SAT I: 2400 (one try)
* SAT IIs: 800, 800, 790
* ACT: N/A
* GPA:4.0
* Rank: Top of the class
* Other stats:

Subjective:

* Essays: good to excellent
* Teacher Recs: Excellent
* Counselor Rec: Excellent
* Hook (if any):

Location/Person:

* State or Country: USA
* School Type: Private Competitive
* Ethnicity: A
* Gender:M
* Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: No research?
* Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Not focus on math/engineering. I have too many interests.

Other Factors: Don't know
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: No offense, decided long time ago not to go to MIT even admitted. Stanford is a better place and better fit for me.

Astrodaughter: NOT Accepted (nicer way of saying the D**** word)... :)

Here's her stats....SAT: 2250; SATII: physics 800, Math II 790, GPA 4.0 uw, >5.0 weighted; 12 APs by the end of this yr; class rank 1/575...good ec's, awesome recs, etc.

She didn't have any over-the-top activity/research/etc. that made her more unique than most other valedictorian science/math nerds. We had a long talk on Friday night.....she was not expecting to get in; but hoped that she would--more for the self-satisfaction of being able to say she'd been admitted here; didn't think she'd go there if she did get accepted because of the money differential between MIT and other schools that are offering her lots of merit $$$.

She's still hoping that MIT may be an option for Grad school. It was kind of like a big relief to finally get it behind us. No negative feelings at all...it helped that we'd just come from an awesome on-campus experience at one of her other choices. Good luck to all!!!

ACCEPTED

SAT I: ehh okay

SAT IIs: 800,800,710

GPA:4.0

Rank: 1

Other stats:

Subjective:

Essays: funny

Counselor Rec: Excellent

Hook (if any): sorry i don't have any....maybe i have a weird name

Location/Person:

School Type: public

Ethnicity: SA

Gender:F

Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Math Genius

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: it was a combination of research, math awards, and UIL math contests, and Physics State award stuff

Congrats to all who got in!

Rejected.

Whatever is meant to happen will happen :) It will all work out for the best.

Hispanic Hottie "Affirmative action is going to change the world in a good way"

Yes it is a wonderful tool so that people who normally would have trouble getting into a mediocre state school can get accepted to whatever university their heart desires. Everyone else who managed to get by on 3 hours/night sleep while taking legitmitely hard classes and balancing demanding E.C.s? They get rejected left and right, but who cares if they are discriminated against, as long as MIT can report acceptable diversity statistics

"i work really hard to overcome my disadvantages"
Clearly, I don't think MIT has ever seen a 1700 SAT before

Hispanic Hottie, if your post wasn't a joke and you actually got in with those stats, go make the most out of this gift MIT has given you but don't be surprised when the real world discounts the value of your degree

trackstar, I somehow doubt MIT lets every hispanic or african american with a 1700. As I've mentioned previously, MIT looks for academic potential, charcater and personal qualities.

That said Hispanic Hottie, Are you serious ?

hmm...new member with one post. I bet someone made that account to make a statement.

if not.......hm....

Trackstar were you rejected? If so why do you think it was, because undeserving minorities took your place?

I think affirmative action could use some work, but without it a lot of underrepresented people wouldn't get the same opportunities. Not because of racism, but networking and limited resources. Diversity is a good thing to have, a college filled with the same kind of people would not be representative of the real world and it would be a disservice to the college experience for me not to meet different types of people.
