i have great scores and got my stuff in by sept 17th but still nothing i'm going out of my mind

"is there any way it could be because there are certain students whose stats make them so overqualified that admissions assumes even if they accept the student, he or she won't attend? maybe admissions would rather give someone who's a good fit an acceptance over someone who's overqualified/ivy league material...?"

Ja'mie,
That is referred to as "Tuft's Syndrome", or, in lieu of that commonplace sobriquet, "Yield Protection". Wiki for more details: Yield protection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have heard of people coming from my school who were probably over qualified for UMich and were deferred or rejected (or, of course, both). Which is kinda dumb, because I'm in state and from a town with a lot of children of alumni and therefore a lot of my classmates would want to go there regardless of if they can get in to more prestigious school (or may not be able to afford a more prestigious school). And yes, it is the case in my town that high school students want to go the same place as their parents.

I, however, am not over qualified. I have a 3.7 UM GPA and a 31 ACT. Now, while I called the aforementioned practice "kinda dumb," I do understand that it could help me get in. But still; if I was one of those people, it would tick me off.

Meanwhile, I like the people who have already gotten in from my school, but they need to stop asking if I've gotten in, because it feels so much worse to say no to them. And it's easy for them to say that I'm going to get in because they already have.

i haven't gotten in anywhere!!!...these people better accept or reject, so that i don't waste anymore time on wolverineaccess...

for those still waiting, i go to "the best" public high school in ann arbor and most of the students still haven't recieved their decision yet, and the admission office is within an earshot...

walk in and hold them hostage for a decision...

do they send you an email or something to tell you if they still need something from you? on my status page, they've received everything from me, no blank columns or sections there. i am just afraid that they may still need something from me but just dont show it on my status page.

what days/times do they usually post the decisions??

@ psp

Yes, they will send you an email if they still need something from you. I know because I got one :P.

There is no such thing as an "overqualified" student for UM. Students with excellent applications are of course admitted. Often, they tend to get significant scholarship offers as well.

It would be pointless for UM to attempt to reject such students anyway - there aren't all that many of them out there and even if all of them who are accepted don't attend, the yield numbers change by a fraction of a point at most.

So Apprehensive!!
I wanna have a decision under my belt.

Stan's Life

hahhaha i agree with your most recent statement mjsportsmj :P, you are secretly my favorite.

tetrahedron, do you have those exact statistics? Because if not, I'd like to politely disagree with your notion. However, if in fact you do have them, then good point.

lol way to cover your butt in case he does have the stats Ja'mie. :)

But in all seriousness everyone who hasn't been admitted or decided on yet after 6 weeks should just assume and accept that we got REJECTED by Umich. And then we can go on and live up our senior year w/o checking our wolverineaccess every morning and night. Because this stress is driving us INSANE. So woopdy doo we got rejected. Got to accept it some time.

And then if any of us DO get ACCEPTED then we will get outrageously happy and set our pants on fire! and then it's Party Time, in Ann Arbor!

yea, im with hockey31

even though im sure there are still a lot more people who got accepted but just havent been notified yet. not too many people have gotten accepted already. only the really qualified people have been accepted...so im pretty sure all the average and borderline applicants will be hearing pretty soon.

and i heard that pretty much everyone who applied early response will be defered at the very least? no one will be flat out rejected at this point rejected unless they've got terrible stats.

The only problem with assuming I've been rejected is the people (parents, classmates...) who still think I'm going to get in. This is how a typical conversation goes:

Parent/Classmate/Random person: So, have you heard from Michigan yet?
Me: No. [Pause while they look like they're sorry for me]. It's been almost two months. I don't think I'm going to get in.
Parent/Classmate/Random person: Oh, of course you will! You're such a good student! You only have (insert number of weeks until December 24th) weeks until they said you'll find out.

Honestly, I have that conversation about ten times a day.

Because honestly, I don't think I'm going to UMich next year. I think I would've heard by now.

I know a straight A student at a top high school instate who had a 32 on her ACT and she still hasn't heard back from U-M. Her mother and two older siblings also went to school in A2. Don't panic yet.

do they only accept a few of reach/borderline students (non-athlete)?

hahahah, I'm with hockey on this one. and in our spare time while we're not obsessing over what other people think about our chances of being accepted (even though everyone's thought are based on an inordinant amount of speculation), we can all watch Summer Heights High. It's SOO FUNNY.

There are a few very qualified students at my school who applied to Michigan and nobody has heard yet. I don't think its just by how qualified you are.
