The Official M10 2019 Freakout Thread

Really curious about a few things:

  1. What schools do y’all consider “safeties”?
  2. When you hear that a school is more selective than you thought, does it make you less eager to apply/attend? More? Indifferent?
  3. What kind of acceptance rates do you consider selective vs “safe”?

@CaliMex I consider a school to be a safety school when they have high acceptance rates and when my stats are above their averages.

To me, schools 45%+ acceptance rates are safe. Any school with an acceptance rate less than 30% is what I’d define as selective.

@Calimex I can’t speak for everyone but personally here are my answers.

  1. Personally, a school with an acceptance rate in the low 40s+ range is in my opinion a safety-ish school. While I know some people will come after me for this, personally I already attend a private boarding/day school which is still well-regarded and a "feeder school" in many cases. While I want to attend a "top" school I don't see a reason for me to sacrifice my current school for a safety that isn't as well regarded.
  2. It doesn't necessarily make me less eager to apply, but if I am accepted I would be less eager (read:scared out of my freaking mind) to attend. I think that goes for most applicants because when I was talking to my tour guides at Andover and Exeter they both said they thought they would come here and be the dumbest person in their grade, ultimately they were not.
  3. IMO, selective schools are in the low 30s and below and safe schools are in the high 30s and up.

I spoke to an AO at Mercersburg earlier this week and was told we would receive an email, but I haven’t. Nothing from WRA either @CC4life .

@busymommyof4 WRA just said decisions would go out sometime in the morning this upcoming Friday, which is really vague. I have heard that some people have received the gateway info for Andover’s decisions but I still haven’t received an email. Has anyone else heard anything?

@CC4life I’m in the same boat… haven’t gotten an email since I submitted. Where did you hear about people receiving the gateway info and what did it say?

@ThatScorpio So andover originally said that they would send an email in early march with information on how to access decisions through “an online portal” however according to people I know who are also applying they received emails giving a time and login information for them to find decisions on gateway to prep schools on M9 at 9:00 AM EST. The same thing is stated on the decisions notifications thread on CC. So I’m just wondering if this is common knowledge from an earlier email or another email has been sent out over the past couple days.

@CC4life that’s really interesting. I also received an email saying they would send information in early March but haven’t gotten an update… I know I’m probably crazy to feel nervous about that, but I do … so much …

^^^ I wonder if they are referring to the application complete confirmation email, which said “final admission decisions will be available through an online portal on March 9, 2019, beginning at 9 a.m. (EST).” (and then…) "please watch for an upcoming email from our office in early March for instructions on how to access that portal. (in past years, that portal might have been through gateway…?)

That might be it but I find it weird that almost all schools have given information for portals and how they plan to announce decisions yet Andover has not. I know it recent years the TSAO schools have sent an email on March 1st explaining when and where they will post decisions, and I have been told how to view admissions decisions by all the other members except Andover. I am also freaking out about this…even though it probably means nothing.

@CC4life I know… it’s hard not to read into everything!! I guess we’ll find out in a little over a week anyway… (if we know how to access the portal by then lol)

Has anyone gotten an email from Choate about this?

@ilovechoateeeee tbh I don’t think choate has sent an email the entire application season. Jk…but they don’t really send any emails unless your application is missing something. I do know that decisions will be released on M9 since choate is a TSAO school and it will be in the GoChoate portal. And while I love Choate, Ironically, the GoChoate portal is the one thing that makes me not want to go to Choate. It is incredibly slow and has continuous problems with applicant’s accounts–especially when you try to reset the password or username (believe me I’m not the only one complaining about this.) Anyway, sorry for my rant, but I hope that sums up your question.

@CC4life I believe Kent is sending out admission decision through email

@CC4life ok i’m literally so confused about the gochoate portal complaints. my gochoate portal works completely fine and runs smoothly, even if i’m changing my password or something. but oh well, it’s not like i want it to be slow hahaha

In the old days, regular letter was bad. registered/certified mail was good.

Nowadays, an email with any link is mostly bad; whereas a personal email from someone you interacted with during the process is a good indication. No news is not necessarily bad news, but at this late stage, IMO, and I emphasis, IMOO, is more likely bad than good.

Hey guys! Past M10 Freakouter and current Phillips Exeter junior here! Just popped in to wish y’all luck and say that remember that everything happens for a reason. Love the school that loves you  Cliche, I know, lmao but what can I do. Also, feel free to pm me anytime with any exeter-related questions!

I’m curious as to whether acceptance packages will be timed to arrive on Saturday or Monday. Any guesses?

@muchanxieotea Yeah same mine works perfectly fine

To all of those waiting for instruction emails from schools…I remember being in your shoes a few years ago. There are several of the highly applied to schools that literally wait until a day or two before M10 (M9 I guess this year). So although it is completely understandable to panic…don’t. Trust me. You will get the information you need in time. Now, everyone go fix themselves a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows and watch the Harry Potter marathon.
Good luck!!!
