Accpeted - SAT 1900 (CR630/M700/W570) O level 6 A’s & A level 2 A’s

Rejected - SAT 2150 (CR720/M720/W710) O level St. A’s and A level St. A’s

Both these applicants are from my school. Notice here that Furman doesn’t require any school-specific essays. The guy who got rejected had a better essay as well. So, we just couldn’t understand WHY??

@talha_adnan: Lets call the acceptee A while the rejectee B. Here we go:
[ul]
[]B applied for financial aid while A did not
[]A is/is going to be a US National/Green card holder while B is not
[]B gave the impression of a nerd and Furman needed a non-nerd for a change. Or: They had already selected too many nerds from South Asia and wanted a reprieve
[]B had genuinely good ECs e.g. few but showing sustained interest
[]B applied after the deadline or applied after A
[]Furman’s avg SAT score range is 1230-1380 while its avg GPA is 3.68. Who are we kidding here? Maybe the adcoms were satisfied of their position in the league tables and did not want to manipulate it
[]Essays are entirely subjective. So while you may have not liked A’s, but an adcom may have been touched by it
[]A had great and specific RECs for Furman i.e. they mentioned the university name and a faculty member or two while B’s did not
[]B emailed/called the adcoms and asked stupid questions or offended them through inane remarks
[]A’s name had a real light buzz to it while, B’s, unfortunately, sounded more like Laden or Chemical Ali
[]A used a courier service while B sent through local mail owing to which all the documents were either not received or they were received late
[]A’s birthday was the same as one of the adcom’s; or better, the university’s
[li]The adcoms were enjoying ice cream when they read A’s application but arguing over their wives (and husbands) when they reviewed B’s[/li]* I have run out of ideas…

Well, *B applied for financial aid while A did not * - No! Both applied for financial aid, where B showed more financial contribution as compared to A.

A is/is going to be a US National/Green card holder while B is not - No! Both of them are just Pakistani citizens.

3 & 4 - That could be the reason!

B applied after the deadline or applied after A - Both of them were in the same post office on the same date, and the same time.

6 & 7 - I guess that could be the reason as well. :D

A had great and specific RECs for Furman - No! I remember, we were all sitting in the school resource room on the last day, editting A’s RECs. :D

9 & 10 - Could be, B’s second name is Kiyani. They might have thought that he has some military links, perhaps! :D

Oops…! This should have said A. I guess you did understand I meant A, didn’t you? A lot of ECs are rubbish, unless they show sustained interest.

If i had applied for aid, my chances of getting into any tier 1 university in the states would’ve been slim. Apart from USC and Northeastern, i applied to UMichigan, Dartmouth, Lehigh, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin-Madison, UT Austin, Texas A&M, Michigan State Uni, and Umass Amherst. Still waiting for the rest to reply. Im confident about my essay because people who read it said it was one of the most brilliant college essays they’ve read so far. My stats arent great. How else would you explain the USC engineering acceptance? Must’ve done something right. Ohh and btw im from froebel’s, islamabad.

Have you visited Lahore America School (LAS)? They do conduct APs, but I am not sure whether an ‘outsider’ can just come in and take them. I met someone recently who was apparently willing to fly to the Middle east to take APs because he couldn’t find here in Pakistan.
