@talha_adnan: Lets call the acceptee A while the rejectee B. Here we go:
B applied for financial aid while A did not
A is/is going to be a US National/Green card holder while B is not
B gave the impression of a nerd and Furman needed a non-nerd for a change. Or:They had already selected too many nerds from South Asia and wanted a reprieve
B had genuinely good ECs e.g. few but showing sustained interest
B applied after the deadline or applied after A
Furman’s avg SAT score range is 1230-1380 while its avg GPA is 3.68. Who are we kidding here? Maybe the adcoms were satisfied of their position in the league tables and did not want to manipulate it
Essays are entirely subjective. So while you may have not liked A’s, but an adcom may have been touched by it
A had great and specific RECs for Furman i.e. they mentioned the university name and a faculty member or two while B’s did not
B emailed/called the adcoms and asked stupid questions or offended them through inane remarks
A’s name had a real light buzz to it while, B’s, unfortunately, sounded more like Laden or Chemical Ali
A used a courier service while B sent through local mail owing to which all the documents were either not received or they were received late
A’s birthday was the same as one of the adcom’s; or better, the university’s
The adcoms were enjoying ice cream when they read A’s application but arguing over their wives (and husbands) when they reviewed B’s
B wrote a harsh letter to the adcoms about A, showing what a wuss B was
B had an alumni interview where he revealed he was suffering from the serious case of bad breath
A was the kid of an alumni
A told B that he was applying for aid while he actually wasn’t

Yeah, I saw it on the channels. Pretty grim. If there’s any consolation, at least we have a leave from schools and colleges tomorrow. If the police is prepared to shoot, things could get bloody. God forbid that in all its forms.

people!..i dont know whether it counts or anything, but i just got an admission offer from HKUST. (hong kong) with substantial scholarship.
for those of you who dont know, it’s a really cool university, sort of new(established 1992)…oh, and it’s ranked higher than a couple of ivy’s :D

I didn’t know about it, Khan. I just found out through your post!

@ green boy, 10char is used when your post your reply in less than 10 characters. You see, if your reply to some thread is less than 10 characters, college confidential doesn’t allow you to post it. 10char is also used in other chat forums.

My parents wanted me to apply to NUS and HKUST. It seemed too much of an effort then and i thought i wouldnt get in. Congrats though. What major? Engineering? Ohh and random question guys but has any acquaintance of yours applied to USC?

but waleed man, HKUST’s application is quite straight-forward…like online app… there is still time for round 2 deadline (march 30 i guess). I’d encourage you to apply
