You wrote your own letters or recommendation?

So you’re one of those “I’ll do it because I can get away with it” people?

That, I’m sorry to say, is quite disgusting.

*of

…

@mohammadeht: Woah! Your teacher(s) didn’t even edit what you wrote? :S Hell, my school teaches the Federal Board system and even they are better than your “high class” A-level school :|

When I wanted my reference letters, they told me to make a list of my achievements/extracurricular activities at school, and then confirmed them AND then they wrote it :|

just curious DID every1 was accepted for lums last year being its first batch less students ?
was it easy?

i feel i will get rejected from LUms :S

Btw intert tht was harsh really

being in a school where teachers dont knw about how to rite recommendations u have to go for ur own

I asked my teacher for recommendation

SHE REturned me back with JUST ** 4 LINES ** :S

but then i gave some bunch of samples , gave my own written sample and then she wrote huh!!

@Dark_Angel: “Allah se acha gumaan karo, Allah acha karega. Bura gumaan karo, to bura karega.” Think positive :)

I’m sorry, but I agree with Inert101(though I wouldn’t have put it so harshy). I just have to say I’m disappointed. This is no light matter. I wish this kind of stuff didn’t happen. No excuse merits the dishonesty of attributing your words as someone else’s. I understand ethical applicants like Inert101’s feelings. Hundreds of thousands of applications yearly to top schools, with only a fraction successful. Like ECs, recs and essays can be faked. And it seems that eveything that can be faked, people do. I’m sorry, I’m not trying to say anything personal here… Like I said, I’m just really disappointed that this happens. But not to worry, my counselor said people in the US do this with recs as well. It’s an internationally disagreeable phenomenon.

About the recommendations…well mostly teachers say they don’t v time so write ur own and get it edited which is really odd considering it is supposed to be confidential…Well I had a funny experience regarding it…

I was lucky enough to v teachers recommendation written by teacher but later I found out that in one of the recommendation teacher had given exactly same example for me and my friend…It was like…“He said…”…and the two of us ended up in applying at same place!..lolx

My teachers were actually quite particular about their recommendations being confidential. I guess they wrote good things though, seeing as by the grace of God I have had good luck with my decisions so far.

@ hb730 and INERT101: Both of you come from schools that are reputed for sending its students to us unis. (Thats not supposed to mean that i have anything against International Schools. In fact two of my favorite authors are LAS Alumnis). Therefore your teachers must be very strict about recommendations, and more so when it comes to Intellectual dishonesty (as it should be).
Now lets take my school for instance. In the last 15 years, we have sent only two students to US unis. Teachers would do anything but teach. They would rather go and have a nice cup of tea and gossip with other teachers and what not. I asked for my recommendation from my teachers two months before the deadline, and kept on reminding him of it every day. However, despite providing him with all the samples and information, he left my recommendations till the very end. On the deadline, he wrote four lines for me, which were completely generic. Now i dont need to emphasize how damaging that is for my application. US unis say that they are holistic but they had no idea how *ed up my situation was when it came to writing recommendations. Now you must be thinking that i must be nobody in my school and therefore the teachers didnot pay much attention. In fact I have been their valedictorian for the past three years, and brought many national awards to our school.
With the past two rejections, i have a pretty good idea of how other decisions will turn out. I was honest in my recommendations in that i didnot temper with my recommendations at all. But no matter how much i want to think that i was honest, the simple fact is that my I am *ed because of my teachers and my recommendations. No matter how morally wrong it sounds, I should have tempered with my recommendations. In that way at least, I wouldn’t have let some idiot of a teacher ruin my past four years work.
PS: Sorry if this sounds arrogant or anything, but I needed to vent my frustration.

You’re absolutely right Ecthelion, and I have to admit I can’t actually conceive of the frustration you must be going through. Obviously what’s happened can’t be changed, though I wish it could: it’s an inherent problem with recommendations, and I wish you had told your counselor to mention the issue in his/her report. Our educational system is pitiable, and teachers just don’t care. You did exactly what you were supposed to, which was stay honest. All isn’t lost- I’ve seen a lot of these decision threads where those with generic recs are still successful. The results so far for you are probably because of the frustratingly competitive nature of US college admissions. I honestly hope that everything turns out fine for you, and remember you always have our support. Try not to think of a gap year, and even if you do in the end, know there are people who wish for your every success and will be there for you next year (cheesy as that sounds).

Thanks man!!
I really hope that the examiners dont give much preference to the recommendations in my case.

@Ecthelion: I like you, bro  Have you applied to places besides the US? And I really hope you get into a really neat place Inshallah! And one has to be realistic and you should atleast MENTALLY prepare yourself for a gap year INCASE you need to take one. I doubt anyone would want to take a gap year on purpose just for fun, but we have to face the realities of life. I was a Gold Medalist in my school, supposedly all set to rule the world. But as I have been saying for quite some time, Allah had different plans for me and life forced a gap year upon me. It used to kill me knowing that I could have been in Canada or Australia but I was stuck home. It took a little time convincing myself, and now I think this gap year was the best thing to happen to me. I get to relax (a completely new “phenomenon” :P), I get to read all the books I want, watch all the TV shows I want, I get to spend time with my parents, concentrate on my physical health, life’s great!

I don’t know if that was needed, but I didn’t like your depressed post. All will be well, just trust in Allah! And BE GOOD; Allah has his ways of punishing when we do bad stuff =)

Ecthelion, I salute you. At least there’s SOMEONE out there who would go out of his/her way to stay honest. Don’t worry about the gap year thing, I should be the one worried… I think I’m one of three people in our class that still has not received a single acceptance.

As for recommendations, I guess some teachers are like that. You just have to try to find a teacher who not only likes you but can also write about for you for at least a page or more. It always helps to talk to our teacher and ask him/her to write more than just a couple of lines, and remind him/her of all the amazing stuff you’ve done.

Happy Pakistan Day!

Pakistan Day!!

Happy pakistan day every 1

Happy Pakistan day EVERYONE! Have LOTS of FUN!!!

I, for one, have the utmost respect for all those that still believe in honesty, principle and truth even when everything seems to be going against them. Ecthelion, remember, that although you may think things are looking grim for you at the moment, fear not as Allah has only good things in store for good people. God works in mysterious ways - and I completely believe that hard work never goes unrewarded. Keep your chin up and head held high - inshAllah, the next few weeks will only have good things in store for you.

Also, thaees March mubarik saaron ko!
