The official Pakistani Thread for the class of 2016

Hey Iamanapp, What chances do I have of getting into one of the ivies (had a 2270**)
My stats are listed on the previous pages… Hope to hear back from you.

Thanks

@ut: Nope, Yale does not. I did not apply to Yale, but that’s what I know. Yale tries to interview everyone, regardless of their chances.

@hi: That SAT score is fine. I had a lower score and still managed acceptances from Columbia, Stanford, Penn, and the like. The SAT is just one metric to judge a candidate on. The things that make an actual difference (i.e. significant enough to truly improve admissions chances) are international and recognized awards like the International Mathematics Olympiad. Otherwise, you’re on the same playing field as everyone else. Just put in a good application and hope for the best. Not much of a difference between 2200 and 2270.

Now that is what throws me off!!! I have exactly no idea ehat people talk about when they ask a person to do something special. The other thing that throws me off is summer programs. I have absolutely no frickin idea on what is considered a good summer program… Could you tell me what you did over your summers… In addition, could you post your stats and also perhaps list what helped you to get into Penn? Also, what did you write for your essay??

PM me if you wish… Thanks a whole lot!

@ bluelove- I’m in the UAE. Hope I didn’t sound anti-patriotic when I referred to it as ‘my country’ but I was born here XD

@ iamanapp- are you sure about the Harvard interviews?? I got mine hardly 3 weeks after submitting my app (which was jan 1st LOL)…and that’s before I won the Cambridge awards.

As a matter of fact, I got offers for the Princeton and Yale interviews AFTER I emailed them updates about those honors…

Don’t mean to get my hopes unusually up, but am kinda surprised.

Also, if you’re aware of the A-level system…is it too less if I’m just taking 3 A levels and an AS this year? (I took 4 AS levels last year)

@leo118: I was speaking of only Pakistani applicants. See the following list. The UAE is one of the countries where applicants are not shortlisted.

[Harvard College Admissions § Applying: International Interviews](http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/apply/international/interviews.html)

Bottom line: If you’re one of the countries in the second list and haven’t been contacted for an interview by Harvard by March 15th, you’ve been rejected.

Doesn’t mean you wont get into any of the other HYPS though. I was rejected by Harvard but likelie-d at Duke and then accepted by Stanford before Ivy decision day. This is while a couple Harvard admits were rejected by Columbia and Brown. So, keep your hopes up–the admissions process is the very definition of crapshoot.

PS: And, honestly, your Cambridge awards don’t count for much at all. You only reminded them of your existence which shifted their interviewing priorities. Doesn’t make a difference to chances.

It could be seen as weak, sure. I took 6. And had my results for all 6 - A*'s and A’s - because I applied in my gap year. There was one admit in the Columbia group who had taken 8.

But then there are students I’ve met here at Penn who took 4 and got A’s in those 4 and that was enough. Basically, no matter how many you do, just do them well, and you should be good to go.

@hi: I apologize, but I don’t feel comfortable discussing my detailed stats.

Thanks for the info iamanapp! =D

A month is a real long wait  sigh

@leo118 and iamanapp, I think it is weak, but not THAT bad. 6 is a lil bit much dont you think?
We take 4 A levels (with General Paper that is an AS) in our school, certain students take Further Math extra mostly for UK colleges, and our school has pretty good stats regarding acceptances.

^ Yeah, 4’s fine. Like I said. The majority here at Penn, especially the Grammarians, took four. I took 6 because I wanted to. Not for admissions-sake. But, just making it clear to you that there are those who go above and beyond what’s required.

As a side-note: Once you actually go to an Ivy/Stanford, you realize how hyped up it was. People here are really not very smart at all. Extremely hardworking, though, everyone is. Keep that in mind. Just take 4–work hard–get 4 A’s–and you’re good.

@iamanapp Yes I agree with you, but for some reason in our school those As are sorta expected
“there are those who go above and beyond what’s required”
Well, we have always been emphasized to accomplish this through things OTHER than grades, since grades are a given. Our counsellor said in the time taken to do extra subjects do an extracurricular that can brush up your app much more.

NO PROB… Btw since summer is coming up, which summer programs should I attend??? I luve in NJ… USA… Not Pakistan… Though I might go there and volunteer for edhi becoz mom wants to see family there… Thanks.

I heard a KGS student was accepted to Imperial College London.

@ perazziman i am not sure of the exact number since our grade is too big, but roughly i’d say 10 have gotten offers, I personally know 4

^That sounds about the same as last year (10 from KGS). Are you applying to any of the UK schools?

Nope. No money :(

i just received an email from Northwestern telling me that they were withdrawing my application as it was still not complete :open_mouth: They sent me an email that my SAT scores were not submitted almost 15 days ago, I replied back with the exact date they were submitted and never heard back so I thought they might have received it or something but now this  I sent the admissions office an email will call them later tonight when their office timings start. These apps can be such a mess at times. :/

@ iamanapp and bluelove- Truth be told, my academic situation’s a bit more complex than just those figures, but here’s the summary- I took 7 subjects in IGs which included the three core sciences (Chem, Phy and Bio), in year 12- switched to commerce and took 4 sub (Bus, Eco, Math and English). Then, I chose to go private this year and left school. Prepared for SAT 2s in Phy, Chem and Math II, and now I’m just left with a couple of months to do 3 A levels (Bus, Eco, Math) and 1 AS (Further Math), not to mention A-level English is not offered in our part of the world.

Whew Wasn’t that a long story! Didn’t mean to bore you but I’m kind of hoping this very story works out with the admissions committees LOL!

Thanks for both your input, tho…its kind of driven me extra to work for 3 A*s and 1 A :)

In any case- an extra question- say I don’t do well on these A-levels (I do suffer from a crisis of confidence at times) and get…say As and Bs- admissions directly rescinded? :/

@ Usama- WOAH! I thought they give you some kind of a notification (email or somethin) in case something extra is required or the application’s incomplete! What a mess, indeed! Hope you’ll keep us updated about what happens once you contact them in this regard.

But I’m sure you don’t have much to worry about…with your stats and accomplishments I’m certain you’ve got many great options in store for you come April!

BTW, I think that’s what iamanapp meant when he said they’re a crapshoot!

@ leo118 wow you’ve got a story. Don’t worry about it us colleges are quite accommodating about these things  and
yit shows you’ve made some non typical choices!

@usama that sucks! Good luck hope it works out for you
