The Official Penn State questions thread

I figured id make this thread since it coming down to the wire with respect to students making their decisions on which college they will attend.

Feel free to ask me any questions, or just post any general questions in this thread :).

I guess I will start with a question.

Are the laundry machines big enough to fit a blanket and pillow? What about the dryers?

I heard somewhere that frats are very big at PSU main; is that true?

A thin blanket, yes. A thick one or a conforter, maybe yes if you squeeze them in there, but definitely not a good idea. Dryers are always very spacious. Those rascals are lavish!

One tip, do not use too much detergent. You may think it is enough, but your clothes will come out soapy. To this day, everytime I do laundry my clothes come out "soapy."

Plaid: Yes, they are avtive in events like thon, but if you don't go to frat parties or interact with them, it doesn't make any difference. My hall is accross the street from frats and I haven't had problems whatsoever with noise or other disturbances.

How do you suggest I wash my twin size comforter?

Put in there, just don't include a pillow!

Frats are big but there are always apartment parties if u really wanna stay away from frats ;). lol but yeah they're a good part but not so that you have to interact wit a frat.

lil_killer, there must be at least one laundromat in town. They usually have double and triple load washers. Also, the front-loading no-agitator style helps. For the once or twice you need to wash your comforter, that should be easy enough.

I've been surprised that my kid hasn't gotten any mail from PSU since sending in a deposit. We're getting lots of mail and "welcome student" stuff from OSU, Pitt, SUNY and Ohio U, and have gotten a little bit of mail from Duquesne relating to the Honors College, but NOTHING from PSU or UCONN. Not feeling the love...is it because my kid is just average according to PSU demographics? Is it only the Honors students who get welcomed into State College?

I have another kid who will be going to State College next year from a regional campus. I haven't gotten mail as a parent of a current student either. I signed up for the email newsletters, but that's been it. It's a LOT different from last year, when he went to another State's University and every month I'd get a newsletter about the school in the mail, a parents' email (there was a parent organization), invitations to stuff at the campus for parents, offers from various organizations having gift sales for students, notices of lectures or other activities that family members might want to attend, etc. Frankly, I miss it!!! Am I just not on a Mailing List somewhere, or should I accept my empty nest more gracefully?

i think PSU is a bit overwhelmed this year due to the volume of apps. They're still reviewing and have been since August - those admissions people must be really tired!
I remember that we got lots of mail from certain schools after my son was accepted (but didn't yet notify of his intentions). I think that some schools feel they need to "market" more. PSU is not one of them - but I think that's OK. By the way, FTCAP was a pretty nice session - for both parents and students. And you do get some mail after they start. In the meantime check out the Digital Collegian and hang in there!

I think PSU is trying to get away from 'snail mail'. I do not remember receiving a lot of it last year. (I think it is a good cost reduction strategy.) In fact this year, even freshman housing was done online. (It was done via 'snail mail' last year.) But from what I remember, if you sent in your deposits early (by early February), your student should be receiving a neon colored card (about the size of a half sheet of paper) in the mail within the next few weeks pertaining to first year testing (FTCAP). Also, there should be some new student emails coming to your kid. I remember S got one from a student saying if he had any questions to email him/her and one pertaining to an online chat session for accepted students. There may have been more, but those are the ones I knew about. One thing to be aware of...if your spam filter deletes mass emails, rather than sending them to a 'Bulk' folder, you might not be receiving them. Be sure to have psu.edu as an allowed sender. In the mean time....enjoy the calm.

Are the placement tests timed? Should I study for them? Are there some practice questions on their website?

Yes they are timed. I don't think it is necessary to study for them as they are placement tests and a tool to put you in the right classes.

Is it a better idea to take ENGL 15 during the Fall/Spring rather than the Summer? It seems like students are at a disadvantage by taking it over the Summer, because they get less time to write papers.

Go for english 30 bro, do it during the fall.

What is the difference between 15 and 30? I'm not that good in English, and my vSAT score shows that. Isn't 30 supposedly harder?

stick with 15. The standards for 30 (honors) are too high and will probably hinder you.

Should I take 15 this Summer or Fall? Also, is UP really hot during the Summer?

My s is a senior. We get the newswires via email, and the Penn Stater Magazine because we are members of the alumni association. Also a hospitality newsletter from the Nittany Lion Inn/Penn Stater probably bc we have made reservations online. So you are not missing anything.
Karp is correct about PSU getting away from snail mail. Even the bills are done online - no paper tuition bills anymore.

lk, I thought you were doing the LEAP program? The engineering "prides" (now that is corny) consist of engineering design and speech.
