I don't think surly identifies with mocking, necessarily. It just denotes ill-humor. But ill-humor and mocking are slightly different.
And according to dictionary.com, surly seems to identify with being ominous too, and his words weren't necessarily ominous. They were just mocking.</p>

<p>About the passage about the Korean woman, one of the choices was self-awareness/identity and the other one was national identity... and at some point after learning about her history she says she felt her "sense of self rising"... so the self-awareness/identity should be correct.</p>
