the official "RATE MY EC" thread

A catholic teacher when you have religion classes

OK, let's see what you think of my ECs. I'm a freshman, so there won't be many...

Volunteering:
Hospital A- 20 hours
Hospital B- 28 hours
American Red Cross- 28 hours
Also, I plan on getting my EMS license, so I can volunteer my time as an EMT this summer. I also plan on volunteering more with those two hospitals. I know I don't have many hours so far, but I only began really volunteering this past summer.

Clubs (I've only joined these clubs this year, since I just caught on to how important (and fun) ECs are, but I'm planning on staying in most of them throughout all of HS, so for four years total):
Spanish Club- Not too serious, but it's so much fun! I'd like to eventually become a part of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (Spanish Honor Society).
Towerette- My school's newpaper
Junior State of America- If you've never heard of this, it's a national debate organization.
History Club- Like Spanish Club, it's not too serious, but there is some community service involved.
Operation Smile- We raise money for Operation Smile, which is a group of doctors that performs operations on children with facial deformities in poor countries. A few students are actually given the opportunity to actually attend a mission to help out.

Summer Programs:
Summer of '05- Jr. NYLC
Summer of '06- Jr. NYLC Alumni Boston
This upcomming summer (Summer '08) I will be attending NYLF/Med.

Miscellaneus:
Dance:
Tap Dancing- 10 years including this year/13 years by the end of HS
Jazz Dance- 6 years/9 years
Lyrical Dance- 2 years/5 years
Viola:
7 years including this year/10 by the end of HS
2 years in Junior High String Ensemble

Let me know what you think. If anyone older has any tips, I would really appreciate hearing them!

No comments or suggestions?

One I thing forgot to mention might be very important, though. A friend and I might start a medical science/future doctors club, next year at school. We would have started it this year, but since we both just started going to a private high school, we thought we should adjust first, so we will only be members for three years, not four. Will this affect me even though we were the ones to start the club in the first place? Do you think starting a club is seen as worthwhile to colleges? We'd do it even if it's not, though, because it will definitely be a lot of fun!

DEFINATELY digging the skiing thing, lots of potential
for essay topics there. Also, published in a large
company magazine thing? Depends...I'm going to assume
it's a fortune 500. If that's the case, i'd give you an 8.7,
depening on what u did to get featured there and how
long the article was.

P-izzle, I won't pretend to be an expert, but your ECs are all very interesting. I think your sports honors are very impressive, but I am not really athletic, so I can't say for sure.

I noticed you don't have any clubs that you are active in, which I'm pretty sure will be a weakness. Also, I don't know if I'd consider reading novels a worthwile hobby. I'm pretty sure colleges assume/hope you do this for yourself! However, your other hobbies are very interesting, especially hunting. Like I said, I don't have a reliable source for any of my critique, but hopefully I helped!

Here are my ECs (again, no one commented or rated them yet):

Volunteering:

Wow, no one has commented yet... I didn't know my ECs were that bad!...

I'm not older, but you definitely have good extracurriculars. You're well-rounded, but you just need to show some passion. What do you plan on pursuing? Whatever it is, show more leadership and involvement in that area, and then you'll be set. I'd say a 7/10 for now, but you have good potential to make that even better.

My ECs:

Music is my life and passion:
1. Guitar:
- I've been playing classical guitar for 4 years: 1st chair in a selective orchestra and in a quartet.
- I'm in two Jazz ensembles.
- I've won several awards for songs that I've written and performed at concerts (classical/jazz/fusion songs).
- I'm in a progressive metal band with friends. We started playing some local shows, and then now we've opened for many big acts (Dream Theater, Into Eternity, Symphony X, Fates Warning) and we've even played shows out of the state and the country (we were invited to play in Canada once...lol). We've won the region-wide battle of the bands competition twice. Over 40 other bands entered.
- My band has a record deal with a label that is somewhat big in the prog world (2Blossoms).
- My band is currently working on our second album, which will have some famous prog artists (Jim Matheos of Fates Warning, Arjen Anthony Lucassen of Ayreon, and Jon Crosby of VAST). It's gonna cost $500 per song...
- National Guitar Workshop: I auditioned for this summer program and got in. It's pretty selective- one of my friends who is also really good got rejected.
- I took courses at Berkelee School of Music one summer for guitar. Again, REALLY selective.
2. I've been working at a local guitar store fixing, tuning, and selling guitars for the past 3 years.
3. I took a sound engineering summer course at Berkelee School of Music a few years ago, and set up a recording studio in my basement. I've recorded demos for a few local bands. Nothing big, but I've made some good cash out of it.
4. I picked up the sitar about 3 years ago. I've been studying Indian classical music with a sitar teacher, and I've played many recitals. I also play for Indian classical dancers in this area. I am one of the only few sitarists here, and since I'm good and dedicated, I'm pretty sought after. I also hope on writing a jazz song with Indian/sitar influence to show my heritage that I can send colleges as an arts supplement.
5. I also happen to be the extremely complacent and lazy co-president of the Guitar Players club. (>____>)

Science:
6. I've been doing research on neurology and related aspects. Freshman year, I conducted an experiment on neurological patters with music (lol) and I won awards from several local and state-wide science competitions. Since then, I've done much more sophisticated and deeper work with neurology and evolutionary biology and my research was recently published. My mentor is a Harvard neurology professor btw. I've won MANY more awards from fairs and I'm planning on sending my results to Intel, Siemens, etc. next year
7. I'm the captain of the math team and I'm the president of the Science club. The Science Club is kind of a joke, as the teacher is known as being a pushover, but I do get to explore one of my passions a bit more and I help kids with questions.
8. I've participated in various Chemistry Olympiads.
9. Science Mentorship- Few selected students are chosen to go tutor kids in biology. This is done outside of school, but counts as school credit.

Journalism/Writing:
10. Editor of School Newspaper
11. Won two awards from the Scholastic Writing/Arts Competition

Volunteering:
12. I volunteer at a local hospital over the summer and during that time I am a "Leader." Leaders basically just tell others what to do, etc. This summer, I'm going to be the "Head Leader" because I'm the one with the most hours (200+ right now)
13. Asha for Youth- Its a volunteer organization to help kids in India who cannot pursue education. The chapter that I am treasurer of has raised over 1000 dollars in the past year.

Misc.:
14. Founder of the school's Cricket Club. I organize games between our school's club and other clubs and I even raised money to make an actual cricket field. I've set up a miniature "league" and I hope that this goes somewhere.
15. In my spare time I like to make movies with friends. Kinda fun I guess.

Ehh.....rate please? And I dunno if it counts, but my youtube account where I play guitar has over 10,000 views. WOOHOO!

First, thanks so much for rating mine! For you,r rating, I think you're extremely well-rounded, and your awards are very impressive. Hmm, I just don't know what to give you as a number grade, but I'd have to say 9/10 because you can't be perfect!

Do you have any advice on ways to show my leadership, especially regarding science. I'm planning on starting a Medical Science Club with my friend, which will hopefully be successful because there are a lot of future doctors at our school, and a lot of people with parents who are doctors, but I really doubt that will be enough.

Thanks so much!

MegaVortex7- Your ECs are all very impressive in themselves, 9. Congrats!

I posted earlier but I'd love another look-at.

How about mine?

1) Spent semester in Israel: Selective, rigorous academic program (1.5 hours of Hebrew and 3.5 hours of Jewish history per day, THEN school), fully independent
2) Spanish Honor Society, Community Service Chair (12), work particularly with the school I volunteer for
2) Regional Historian (12) of North American Federation of Temple Youth Southwest Region (NFTY-SW)

I'd like you guys to rate just one EC, and tell me if it'll help as a 'tip':

Environmental activities:

A little while ago I was part of a team that won Rs. 500000 for our school in an environmental contest. This was one heck of a win, and as a result, we were invited to attend the International Green Building Congress 2007 and make our presentation.

I was also part of a team that won the Chennai segment of a coastal cleanup contest.

I am a member of my school's 'Green Brigade', a group of students who promote environmental awareness within the school.

I'm also currently part of a team which is making a documentary+presentation on a waste dump in the city, and is trying to solve this problem.

ok u people r nuts lol -_-

Oh my gosh. Everyone has so many! We don't have that many clubs at our school. Here's my sad list:

Key Club (Treasurer 10th, VP 11th, going to be president next year)
Beta Club (Alpha 10th and Omega 11th (and next year)) [9th graders aren't allowed in beta club]
Spanish club (9th and 11th and next year)
Prom Committee (11th)
Girl Scouts (K-12)
Project C.A.R.E. (community awareness reaching everyone) (11th and next year)

I have a feeling I'm forgetting something, but that might just be because everyone else has so many!

I'm hoping to join Debate next year. And maybe my school will start a Science Club like the other high school in my district. (I'm so jealous of that. Ah, dork).
