The Official "should I retake" Thread

sigh…

Math: 760
CR: 720
Writing: 780

December one was
Math: 750
CR: 740
Writing: 760

I somehow managed to get a lower score on the 1600 scale… ***… and this last one was with a lot of prep too whereas I did absolutely nothing for the December one…

Idk, should I retake this? I’m aiming for MIT and Princeton so would these scores be good enough? I’m Asian so that probably hurts <_<

jshapiro: It depends on the school, but many schools with a math/science/engineering focus (Caltech and GT come to mind) do not weight CR very heavily. If you’re applying to a more balanced school, then it’ll be more of a problem. But I think studying and trying to improve your CR–to 700, say–definitely wouldn’t hurt.

bryce: you’re fine for UGA and GT, and I don’t know much about BU, but for HYPMS, you really want a 2250+ composite, and both CR and W should be above 700. If you take it again, try to raise CR especially, because the top colleges really look at that score.

feuxfollets: Your composite’s fine, but–I hate to say this, but for Princeton you probably want CR to be higher (750+), and same for MIT and math (780ish at least). I know, I know, the actual difference is minimal, and I doubt your scores would totally sink your app, but I…wouldn’t feel quite comfortable in your position. Just a thing.

i superscord 2150 but my highest single score was 2170… should i retake or will colleges ONLY CONSIDER MY SUPERSCORE?

so opinions -
i’m trying to go to unc chapel hill. i’m not considering any other schools seriously, besides my backups, which are appalachian and elon. and i’m not focusing on them, because i figure if i improve as much as possible for carolina, i’ll be alright for those two. anyway.

my first sat scores were CR600, M580, W490. i retook it because i was really unhappy with those, and felt they weren’t representative of my ability. i prepared some, but not much, but obviously enough to improve significantly in math & writing. my new scores are CR630, M630, W610 (OMG AT WRITING!) according to collegeboard, my scores for each section are in the middle 50 percent of carolina’s scores - more towards the bottom, but at least in the middle 50 percent now haha. i’m a NC resident, so is it worth it to retake the SAT again? i mean, i got a 190 point increase - how much more can it realistically go up? and the middle 50% scores do include out of state - which is significantly more competitive than in state.

so yeah. any opinions are awesome. thanks :)

@Haavain

I’m not that worried about the math section; I have an 800 on math satii and a decent aime score. Well hopefully that’ll make up for the fact that I screwed up sat math twice…

But CR… meh I can’t seem to do well on this no matter what… would retaking it help? My CR score actually went down after preparing for it… lol

Does taking sat 3 times look bad to schools w/o score choice?

Hey, do you guys think that a 770 in Math can be overlooked by an 800 in Math IIC? I made 2 very VERY stupid mistakes in Math…it was supposed to be my 800 section lol It’s the only reason I’m considering retaking it…

^ definitely. You don’t need to retake it. Just get an 800 on the subject test

Feux- it’s 10 points. Just leave it. You won’t get rejected because you were off 10 pts and you won’t get accepted if you get 10 pts higher. I think at this point colleges would question whether or not you have anything better to do than take a 4 hour test on saturday morning to get one more question right I’d just focus on essays and recs.
my opinion

Chocolate- it depends on the college but for most you are fine. Btw how is your superscore lower?

Heyitslauriebeth- umm idk I think it’s a flip. You said you’re in the mid 50 percent… But for und I’d guess that the bottom 15% is bball players and other athletes… So you might not be that safe. Or I could be totally off

Should I retake for BC?

March
cr-610
math-670
writing-570

June
cr-720 (don’t know how that happened but I was glad)
math-680
writing-590 (obviously not a strong subject)
total: 1990

I’m so close to breaking 2000, but my ACT was a 32 so I’m not sure if I should retake SAT’s or just use my ACT score for BC?

I honestly don’t know anything about the act so I’ll let someone else answer that

But ill just say that 1990 is as good as a 2000. It’s mental. People think there is a huge difference but there really isn’t. I don’t think you should retake the sat unless you can keep your cr score up or colleges will think it was a fluke.
Whether act is more impressive… Idk

feux–yeah, AIME more than makes up for it. XD It’s on a totally different level than the SAT I, and if you did well…

I’m going to disagree with aluminum here and say that the ten points does matter. It might be a psychological difference, but it’s still a difference, and adcoms aren’t immune. That said, you seem to have some trouble raising your CR score, so I think the time could probably be better spent working on other parts of your app.

–but to answer your question, taking it three times doesn’t look bad. Most people agree that three is the maximum number of times you can take the test without colleges looking at you strangely.

emchow-- <a href=“SAT - Wikipedia”>SAT - Wikipedia; Yeah, the ACT score is much more impressive. Just send that one.

I’m a rising senior and I took the SATs for the first time in June…

CR 650
M 690
W 790

I’m very satisfied with my writing score but I really thought I did A LOT better in CR and Math. CR has never been my best, but I just really thought I nailed it on the June test!! I’m usually pretty good at math, so the 690 was quite surprising. It should be interesting to see the score reports. Anyway… I’m going to end up retaking it in the fall but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what I should do to really improve my score. Any books that you recommend/study schedules?? I’ll only have one chance to take it seeing as how I will look to hopefully apply ED/EA somewhere (if I find a school I love, that is…)

I’m looking at mostly the top liberal arts colleges so what range do you think I should aim for in CR and M? Clearly, I’m going to try to get the best score possible, but I’m just trying to set a realistic goal. Thanks!

So here’s my SATs so far:

Subject Tests:
Math II 770
Chem 800
US History 800

SAT:

March 2009
CR 740
M 690
W 670
Overall 2100

June 2009
CR 800
M 800
W 710
Overall 2310

Am I set for HYPSM?

January:
CR:770
Math:680
Writing:680 (9)
Composite: 2130

March:
CR:710
Math:800
Writing:740 (11)
Composite: 2250

Superscore: 2310

I feel like I can improve my writing greatly if I prep for it this time but I don’t want to look like I am obsessed with the test. Applying to places like HYPMS. Is there any point in aiming for 60 more points?

kaptainkools and lawlroy I think you’re both fine.

heyitslauriebeth if you think you can prepare and make a significant improvement then I would take it a third time. Chapel Hill is getting tougher every year and every bit helps; I wouldn’t feel too confident sitting near the 25%. Though be glad that we’re both instate, it will make it significantly easier!

Just the plain old question: should i retake?

January 09
680 CR
660 M
720 W - 10 Essay

June 09
740 CR
680 M
750 W - 10 Essay

Maybe for over 2200?

sorry guys for two posts in a row, but would you guys think it’s more beneficial in hopes of raising my math SAT score by retaking the SAT or just leaving that SAT score and taking the SAT II Math 1 test?

Secret Asian Man - gosh it is DEFINITELY getting harder every year! I think I’m going to spend the summer trying to raise it another 200ish points, to hopefully break 2000? after that, I think I’m going to be done with the SAT! hah. I’m really not comfortable in the middle 50% buttt its also tempting to just be happy with my 1870 hah

oh and i forgot to say - not necessarily about the bottom percentages being the athletes! my dad manages an estate for someone whose daughter lives in robeson county and is going to UNC next year. she got a 1560 on her SAT!..out of 2400. i honestly thought he was talking about out of 1600 at first. she’s a minority, she’s had a pretty rough life and all, but that’s just crazy.

So this was the second time I took the SAT, and i’m deciding on whether or not to retake.

February: 2150
CR: 730
M: 620
W: 800

June: 2210
CR: 690
M:720
W: 800

I’m completely happy with both my new math and writing scores. But the critical reading is what worries me. I think I could definitely do better (I got an 800 on the Lit subject test), but is taking the test again really worth it?

I’m applying to schools like Columbia, Northwestern, and WUSTL, if that’s important.

First time I’ve taken the SAT:
CR:740
M:760
W: 600 ( fail, I know ).

That’s only a 2100 but I hear that colleges don’t care about the writing section very much. If this is the case I have a 1500/1600 essentially, putting me at top 1%. I’m not interested in HYPMS and I don’t think I can improve my essay much ( I got an 8 and that was solely because I have trouble writing essays under a time limit ). I might be able to improve my writing but I’m not sure if it’s even worth it.

The alternatives would be studying more for SAT II and the ACT which I think might be more important. I’m probably going to a UC and maybe a reach for carnegie mellon or similar schools ( GPA is only 4.1-4.2 and I have crap EC so any higher is suicide).

Thoughts?
