** The OFFICIAL Stanford EA 2010 Thread

diamond t- i dont know how to say this any better but- you are a jerk

Decision: REJECTED

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2230 (780 M, 760 V, 690 W)
[] SAT IIs: 800 Physics, 770 Math 2c, 730 Literature
[] GPA: 3.8 UW with the most challenging course schedule the school has ever allowed anyone... 7 legit courses and 1 less legit course per semester this year and last.
[] Rank: 3/36
[] Other stats: five 5s, four 4s, taking 5 more APs this year.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I considered them the best work I've ever written. I showed them my soul.
[] Teacher Recs: Apparently one was good, but the other could have been bad.
[] Counselor Rec: Good
[] Hook (if any): None, apparently
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Maryland
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: White
[li] Gender: Male[/li][/ul]Other Factors: I went to SSP and did a lot of other good stuff. I used to be an intense swimmer but quit during junior year. I explained the reasons for this in my application supplement; I thought they were good. At the time I quit, I was just as fast as this guy who got recruited to go to Stanford this year. How depressing.

**General Comments: I wanted Stanford more than anything I have ever wanted in my life.

It may not have been a matter of not having enough, it may have been something that they specifically didnt like. Maybe I came off as too much of an engineering nerd.**

diamond T-

if you're gonna give advice, give it with good intentions. and SHOW that you have good intentions. you know what? i'm not normally an outright mean person, but i have to say, you're being too cocky. yes, we know you're great for getting accepted, but you don't have to be condescending. you are in no way better than anyone else in here. everyone has his/her good qualities. i think you should acknowledge that.

Actually, being an asian male does hurt you in some cases. Do you think being an Asian male applicant to Berkeley will increase your chances? And if you are a typical Asian male then...your chances aren't that great at the top-level.

Very depressed right now…

Decision: Deferred

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2330 (800M 790V 740W)
[] SAT IIs: 800 IIC, 740 Biology-M
[] GPA: 4.00/4.57
[] Rank: 3/319
[li] Other stats: AP Biology 5, AP English Language 4, AP Spanish Language 4
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Goooood. I liked them, and I still do.
[] Teacher Recs: Excellent (Math/English/Employer)
[] Counselor Rec: Very good
[] Hook (if any): Six-week Internship in China this summer? Top Hospital in Shanghai. Mostly orthopedics and ER, I used it in my intellectual essay.

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: CA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Chinese
[] Gender: Female

[/ul]Other Factors: Missed a few paragraphs in the optional box and a few points on the EC list. Oh and about four male/caucasian legacies applied EA from my school (insane, I know) along with a few Asian guys and four Asian girls like me. They have pretty consistently taken six from us a year in the long run.

General Comments: I'm really getting a little tired of applications.

By the way, there does seem to be a Chinese female deferral thing going on...but thats probably because there are so many Asian people that any conclusion can be drawn if you're looking for it. And dude, DiamondT...please calm down..I understand that you're very excited, and thats wonderful, but could you please let other people cope with their decisions in their own way? I'd like to add that I am an Asian Pre-med aiming student who loves math, piano, flute, and does plenty of athletics...and most of the millions of Asians I know are very unique people. I'd really prefer it if you didnt stereotype those who are not in the math/science-hating, music-less category. This isnt an angry gesture, I just think it would be a little more considerate if you watched how you placed your words.

On a lighter note, you guys rock. Reading up on these threads (almost fanatically) has made this week a lot more exhilerating and bearable at the same time, and it's making right now a lot better to deal with. You're all awesome and I know you're going to have an amazing life no matter where you go. :)

Decision: Deferred

Other Factors: How many internationals do they take early????????? I got sent a depressing email saying that I am one of a small group of applicants who got deferred and last year only 10% of the deferred make it.... What extra stuff should I send in??????
General Comments: Down, but not out.

quoting diamondt:
"""are you delusional, you know absolutely nothing about college admissions, period.
Being an asian male in no way decreases your chances. I know several asians with 2000's who got into harvard, yale and princeton. You know what was different about them? They were unique. They were not the stereotypical asian pre-med nerd who has the same EC's as thousand other asian applicants: math, math, classical music, piano, violin, math club, a second math club, no athletics, no "unique" activiities.
These kids were unique. They were varsity captains. Some hated math and science but were a humanities powerhouse.
Don't blame anyone else cause your application looked the same as a billion others. Maybe you should step out under the control and will of your parents and become your own person. Colleges see that, and it will show."""

^okay, what diamondt said is true. how he/she said it was a little too insensitive..but what he said still stands...Do something really great, besides winning a math contest (which is really equivalent to getting a good SAT math score) or playing an instrument for X number of years. what diamondt didnt say is: so you're a violinist since age 5. Ok, do you teach kids violin? are you in all-state orchestra or something like that? That's good enough to stand out. And if you're good at math, do you tutor people in it or head a club for it? That's good too.
Anyway, it's good to show passion in unusual activities. And obviously if you happen to be Asian and good at math, then that's fine, unless there's nothing more to you than slanty eyes and an 800 math. And obviously no one is so empty...so colleges want you.

dude. . .calm down. . .

I was using the term "asian male" to represent those who are stereotypical. . .

[ *] Counselor Rec: Excellent.. know him well, he puts togehter a good package, and he probably told them I was the top pick from our school
[ *] Hook (if any): 3 national level ECs: Siemens/Intel Research on Myeloma Cancer Research at Mayo Clinic, National Level debater (state champ, captain, NFL, ranked top 50 debater in nation, TOC), Key Club Intl, I basically administrate clubs on Executive Board for 3 states (AZ, NM, TX) 150 clubs

[ b]General Comments:[ /b] I can't believe it, was expecting deferred! Congrats to everyone else who got in, can't wait to meet you next year. And don't give up, to those deferred.

dude, affirmative action. they have more than enough asian applicants, it DOES hurt your chances. those who get accepted are brilliant enough to succeed even with this "-10 points" disadvantage.

S was rejected. SAT of 2340, SAT II's of 800,800,760, 3.9/4.6 and 13 APs; perhaps because of homeschooling, you never know that could have a positive too..

Yeah, I was a bit too harsh and insensitive.

Sorry, it sucks if you didnt get in. No need to add any more salt to the wounds.

I just get tired of people saying that their 2400's will get them into HYPS. I've seen so many people with 2300's practically say i cant get in because my sat's are crap so i was venting a little anger i guess. Maybe you'd understand if you had low sat scores.

But yeah, don't worry if you got deffered or rejected. You'll get in somewhere where you'll love to go.

General Comments: I'm way too generic Asian male. >__<

yeah I really don't appreciate the asian/math/science/violin/high SAT score bashing. mainly because I am one of those, and is it my fault I like those things? What would be better, picking up juggling so it would look good for college? Or maybe I should've purposefully missed a couple questions on the SATs. And no, I never bragged about my SAT scores or told anyone I thought I would get in.
So please, step off. just be happy for yourself. I'm happy for you, but i'd appreciate it a lot more if we can refrain from the "I'm so glad that perfect scoring music-playing Asian got deferred/rejected" that seems to be so popular on CC. Just because we like certain things doesn't mean we're freaking soulless.
Sorry if I sound a little bitter. I'm really happy for all of you guys who got in, I'm sure you deserve it like no other. But pleaseee don't rejoice in others' failures.
After all, what goes around comes around.
And like I already said, I got deferred, if you really want to see my stats, you can search threads I've started.

dont worry, i bet youll get in regular decision

dont give up hope
