My daughter was accepted. Hoping she can get a large merit aid scholarship because otherwise the COA will be about $43000 per year and we wont be able to afford to send her. We are OOS and will not qualify for any need-based aid. Based on earlier posts it does not seem that UF gives out many large merit scholarships. Does anyone know when UF issues notifications of scholarships?

@FailingToFlorida You mentioned you are waiting to see if you will be accepted from UT-Austin as well. If you are accepted to UT-Austin in addition to Florida, where will you attend?
I graduated from UF undergrad and the UT-Austin full time MBA program.
Naming your dog after Leonardo’s is truly unique, and I am guessing you have been indoctrinated. I miss the garlic butter rolls at Leo’s and a slice of spinach tomato.
Go Gators! And, Hook 'Em Horns!
@HookEmGators I will probably follow the same route- UF Undergrad and UT-Austin Masters. I’m in state for UF so attending there just makes more sense! Plus, how will I ever gain the freshman fifteen w/o those delicious garlic rolls?

@PassionForUMiami are you deciding between UF and UMiami? My S is and while they are such different schools, each is equally appealing to him at this point. Unfortunately, UM Accepted Student Day and UF Honors College Accepted Student Day are both 4/12, so he’s still deciding which one to attend. (edited to add assuming UF Honors acceptance which arrives early April, I believe.)
@FloridaSwagMan - “I believe the main reason that I got in was because … I did not have a super popular major”
This is an interesting subject. What was your major?
Does anyone know whether the declared major plays a role in admission to UF, and if so, what majors have or seem to have higher acceptance rates? I’m sure the “official” line is that majors play no role in admissions; but what about reality? What about who we know and what we see here on this forum? For instance, do business majors seem to have a lower acceptance rate because of the popularity of the degree? Conversely, do art or music majors have a higher acceptance rate?
My sister is applying in a few years and it would be nice to know this information.
Nothing I’ve seen would make it seem that your major plays a role in admissions. In fact, last year they set a record for the number of engineering majors. UF really pushes the concept of exploring different majors and they really don’t care what your major is as a freshman.
Of course, this is one reason your major really matters as a transfer student. Not only does your college make the admission decision, but it’s transfer students that get squeezed out of the in-demand majors.
@Cshecmia UF is not one of my choices anymore. Right now I am deciding between UM (my first choice) and UCF (my second as of now) because I have the opportunity to get full tuition scholarships from both schools. So that’s what it has come to.
Both great schools! Best of luck.

Reflection
UF was considered a “Safe school” or one that I thought I’d get in easier than the other schools I applied to. Nonetheless, it’s a super awesome school and one that is definitely amazing in education! Congratz to everyone who got in!! I’m probably going to be going to Cornell though

@Snowbells
With an ACT score of 27, you are only at the 25th percentile of the 2014 UF admittees (the middle 50% was 27-31). Whoever told you UF was a “safe” school for you was not very informed. But congratulations!
URM with low income and excellent grades and excellent EC’s will more than make up for lower ACT scores.
Still, 27 on the ACT should never be considered “safe” at UF. Any time you’re on the low end of the test score spectrum, you’re playing catch-up with ECs, URM, etc. It’s just not a safe place to be in.
After seeing SAT’s of 1780 receiving scholarships, it is anyone’s game! Seriously.
