***The official University of Michigan Chances Thread:***

just a note that most people who get preadmit have really good applications. They usually have 2200+ sats, 3.9+ gpa, and whats most important is their extracurricular/awards that they are known through in business. People that are elected to be in preadmit are also really focused in DECA or have founded a student business on their own (that is currently making sales). For the admissions committee for ross to accept an application for preadmit, they need some assurance that this student will be successful not only in studies but in their "business minds"

Don't worry though, you'll have freshman year to "show off" your skills. Oh yeah, and sorry about my last statement that i gave to ummy and animefreakss4. I wasnt thinking much then. Write some great essays that show your dedication to business and if they catch on that you have potential, they may throw you a preadmit. It would also benefit if you sent your application in earlier, so they have a good look at you.

well, h89, i am a first gen american and have 2 brothers who are in the university, if those are hooks.

j89 i was wondering if i should retake the act? cause i don't have the time (the sept. and oct. act test dates i have cross country meets on) and i really don't want to either, but do you think i would make it into u of m with my current statistics? please explain

if you can't make the sept oct tests, make the december test or try taking the SAT. Im sure you can convince your coach that your college career (which prepares you for the rest of your life) is more important that one cross country meet unless you're truly the star of the team... in which i think you should still take the ACT once more. for reference, the sats can be taken on oct 4th nov 1st or december 6th. The acts can be taken on sept 13, oct 25, or dec 13. You probably don't have meets every week, so im expecting that you can make one of them. Apply as early as you can, send all your stuff in, and if you do take another test, send it in immediately. As for now, i am 90% sure you can make it into Umich being instate, having good gpa, and good extra curriculars. Write really good essays and get really good recommendations.

as for your test scores, getting a better test score (31+) will not only help get you into michigan, but may get you merit scholarships and if you want, you can probably join the honors college with a better test score. I personally don't have a liking for the system of standardized testing, but in the end, a lot of things depend on it. With your current stats, a higher test score can solidify your application, and if you do get scholarships/honors, you'll be more than happy that you missed out on one track meet.

thank you very much for that detailed response. i do have another question though, which is whether i could apply to the early decision (due Nov. 1, decision made by Dec. 24) and have the new act affect whether i get in or not? also your advice to retake for scholarships will be taken into consideration as well, overall thank you very much for your advise

I think you'll get differed if you don't get in ( you will probably get accepted if you retake your act/hold up your gpa). Your new ACT will definitely be added onto your old application, and if they hadn't reviewed it yet, then its a plus for you. Apply early no matter what happens though. You'll probably get a decision late nov or dec depending on when you send in your application and if your differed they will consider all material you send in. Applying early will also give you the best considerations for merit scholarships, so i suggest taking the September/October ACT test and sending your test scores in immediately (just a note that they don't accept rush paper scores). You can still get scholarships if you apply later on, but its a little less unlikely.

From the admissions office
"We do offer some merit-based scholarships. There is no separate application for most of these scholarships; they are awarded through the admissions process, and only the most academically competitive students are considered. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions recommends that all applicants who wish to be considered for merit-based scholarships have their applications complete in our office by November 15 in order to receive full consideration for these scholarships. You can view a listing of these merit-based scholarships online. If you are interested in obtaining other types of financial aid such as grants, loans, or work study, please contact the Office of Financial Aid. They may be contacted at the following address:

sorry kindof confusing, that first part. What im saying is that when you send your application in for early action, all material sent after will be added on. If you're differed before they get your new ACt scores, you will most likely get in if you improve your score and send it in. If they haven't reviewed your application and you send your new ACT scores in, they will review it as if you had that score all along.

I want to apply to Michigan and I was wondering if someone could approximate the likelihood that my application would be considered "right in the thick of thigns". I know that nobody can tell me for certain whether I would or would not get into a school, but if someone could approximate for me the level of consideration I would receive from Umich Ann Arbor (low consideration, medium, high) with with the following:

Caucasian, White, Upper Middle Class, Suburban Baltimore, attending very prestigious/difficult inner city catholic college preparatory school.

3.75 GPA
700 Verbal
690 Math
700 Writing
AP US History 4
AP English 4
AP Gov 4
AP Euro History (senior year)
AP English Lit. and Comp (senior year)

This year (senior year) I will be taking introduction to calculus and Physics as well. There is a chance I might be able to take Honors Calculus, but for conservative estimates assume that I am only taking intro to calculus

Outside of School:
-I did about 30 hours of service my junior year and a service trip this summer
-I played on the tennis team and
-helped out with the basketball team (did NOT play). I am hoping that if I am accepted, coach John Beilein will allow me to manage for the basketball team.
-Wrote for the school newspaper
-National Honors Society
-I have worked at a law firm for the last four summers

Applying to LSA.

Additionally-Almost all of (if not than all of) my grades in school have been B+ or A. At my school 93-100 is an A, and an 89-92 is a B+. And of my B+, almost all have been 91/92's...will Michigan calculate my B+'s as A's or will they just default to my high school's grading system? Also, my high school does not weight GPA's, so someone like me who has taken mostly honors/AP classes receives the same points as someone who does not, and my school does not rank its students.

Once again, I am just trying to get a feel for whether or not I will be a middle of the road candidate Out of State Candidate for Michigan. I am certain that Out of State makes it very hard to get into the school, but from what I have heard it seems more feasible than UNC or Virginia (comparable state schools) given my credentials. Will I have a 50-50 shot at getting in? Or will the sheer quantity of other qualified candidates significantly reduce the likelihood of my acceptance given my credentials?

Michigan will most likely give you the a umich gpa depending on your A/B status, but still give your leverage because of your schools grading system. That said, i would say you are at a slight-mid reach: OOS residency, decent ECs/nothing spectacular, good gpa (i would say you are at 3.85 with a little leverage due to your grading system), and good SAT but again, nothing spectacular. The two things that can make your application stand out right now are essays and recommendations. Write really creative good essays, and hope for amazing recommendations from teachers that personally know you, and you'll have a good chance at getting in. Oh yeah, and apply early.

As for your "michigan is more feasible than UNC and Virginia", it probably is for instate michigan students but definitely not for OOS students. Michigan is probably equal to UVA in terms of admission, and slightly harder than UNC (in my beliefs).

UVA is VERY hard to get into OOS...4 people at my school were admitted into IVYs (Cornell, Penn) and were rejected from UVA OOS.

gr2l, I think you have a shot, I mean the Ross PA is very tough to get into. I have a lot of the same stats as you, like I got a 30 on my ACT. My suggestion is not to retake again, unless you are sure you can raise it and that the other times you took the test something was wrong. My friend took the ACT 4 times and got the same score over and over: 29. I think 30 is a great score! You have an awesome GPA and obviously challenge yourself. Some of your ECs really stand out, like the state conference for FBLA. To increase your chances, write good essays (all of my friends who go to UMich all agree on this)! Just have people edit your paper to see if what you are writing makes sense and is free of grammatical errors. Be passionate and explain why you want to do something w/business. I know how you feel...just do your best and don't get upset if you don't get in (if you really want to go to UMich Ross, you can apply as a freshman)! I know you'll get into some pretty awesome schools!

i forgot something else, gr2l! don't send in your SAT IIs, everyone on CC says that they are useless, so you would probably just end up spending money! I decided that I am not going to send my SAT IIs in.

When people say reach what precisely do they mean by that? I take it as meaning that you shouldn't get in but still have a chance...what do others interpret it as meaning?

gr2l - i believe your strength lies in your gpa and your course load. You took really hard classes. Your ECs are fine. Your a match to michigan.

as for wbsgn12's question, what determines a reach, slight reach, match, safety,

i would say, reach = anywhere from 10%-40% chance of getting in, slight reach = 40%-80%, match = 80%-95%, safety = 95%-99% (never sure, also note). This is the general idea of what people have in mind (though its different from person to person)

oooh i also wanted to add that i work as a lifeguard.

jliu - I would say somewhere between slight reach and match depending on how difficult your school system grades. The only thing that kindof hurts is OOS and gpa. Since you're 20/30 out of 600 students, I think that your school simply grades difficultly, which michigan will most likely acknowledge making you a match.

bgirl181 - I would also say match. Michigan looks for leadership in their applicants and you match this criteria, plus your SAT/gpa/course difficulty, looks like a match. Write a couple of great essays and I believe you can get in. The only thing that hurts is your OOS residency, but other than that you look like an amazing candidate.
