As some of you may know, I applied to U-mich late as a freshman this year and got rejected last month...So Im really considering transferring next year..

Since I'll be using my high school stats, here they are, and my predicted 1st semester grades at MSU.

High school :

My school gives the final average in A+/A/A- etc..so these where my grades and my final score:

Arabic A+, AP economics A+, AP Calculus A, AP chem A, Honors Physics A-, Honors english B+

Final GPA : A-...So I'm guessing my GPA would vary from 3.8-4.0 (since UM gives A- a 4.0 ?)

[ *] Other Factors/questions: how selective is Ross for oos, and how fast do you hear from the school if you apply as early as october?

Thank you, I'd really appreciate any inputs

70kgogosing, I think you've got a chance to get into UMich. As for Ross, I'm not sure because it's so competitive. You can check the business school website for stats on the 2007 preadmits. Also, in your essay for preferred admissions, you should really emphasize your internship and your travels bet. korea and america (I travel alot bet. egypt and america and am fluent in both languages, so I know how that can be a plus in an essay). Make sure to make your essays very well, because my friends who are in the b-school said that the b-school really makes sure the essays are well-written. just apply and hope for the best! good luck! hopefully we'll both get in!

I wasn't going to emphasize my travels between korea and america because I was hoping it will naturally come from my counselor/teacher recs, and I didn't want to seem like i'm making excuses, but I think I should consider it.

It seems like it all comes down to essays now..

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA
[ *] SAT: 2010
[ *] SAT IIs (if sent): none, can't i send in ACTs?
[ *] ACT: 30
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 3.2

[ *] Other stats:
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc):
Active member of the Environmental Club, made secretary junior year. Been with the same volunteer program for 2 years now, 100+ hours obviously. Also have other volunteer hours from habitat for humanity, etc. I went on a student educational tour to Europe for three weeks. Played JV lacrosse for one year. Took 4 APs and will take 3 more this upcoming school year.
[ *] Essays: great
[ *] Teacher Recs: great
[ *] Counselor Rec: good
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): older sister is alumni
[ *) Location/Person: New York
[ *] State or Country: New York
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: Korean
[ *] Gender: Female
[ *] major strength/weakness:
Strengths: I think I could write a pretty killer essay about my experiences with my volunteer program. I've been helping this blind woman for two years now and I have incredible things to say about that. She's also somewhat of a celebrity; not that it would make a difference or help me.
Weakness: My GPA. At best it's going to be an 88, but I was hoping I could really improve my Senior year and show them that I can and am willing to improve and get my grades up, even though senior year doesn't go towards your GPA. Also I don't have any noteworthy titles or clubs.
[ *] Other Factors/questions:
Will it help that my sister is an alumni? She graduated in '06 from the Ross school. I'm also going to apply early response so will that help me in any way? I know my GPA is going to sink me and I probably won't have a very big chance of getting in.

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA, Ross

[ *] Rank: 18/310ish can change, but will still be Top 10%
[ *] Other stats:6 AP Classes Senior Year
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): Internship at local Accounting Firm for about 6 weeks, 100+ Hours Volunteer at Hospital, Work at Blimpie every Summer,3 Years Cross Country, 3 Years Spring Track, 4 Years Winter Track, a few other school clubs
[ *] Essays: Should be good

[ *] Counselor Rec: Doesn't Know me that well but knows I work hard
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.):none
[ *) Location/Person: OOS
[ *] State or Country:NJ
[ *] School Type: Decently Competitive Public(Usually Send few kids to Top Schools)
[ *] Ethnicity:Indian(Not Native American)
[ *] Gender:Male
[ *] major strength/weakness: GPA is Weak
[ *] Other Factors/questions: My UM GPA is really low cause my unweighted grades for about 4-5 AP/Honors classes were 88-89.

Thanks for the feedback!
Also, If I apply Ross Pre-admit and don't get accepted, can I still be accepted at LSA?

I know this is a long time since my last post, but I was just wondering what a deferal means exactly when there are rolling admissions. Is it the same as waitlist? Does it mean they'd look at senior gpa as well?

This is just a rough run through. I still have essays to write and SATs to take.

[ *] College: LSA (Psychology)
[ *] SAT (one sitting): None
[ *] SAT IIs (if sent): None
[ *] ACT: 34 Composite (33/34/36/34 with 8/12 in Writing)
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 86? Not sure how that works.
[ *] Course load (# of AP/IB/H, special courses, etc.): I've taken almost all honors and AP classes. I failed one semester of AP Physics, switched to Political Theory and came out with a 98. Dropped down from AP World (71 or so) to regular World History (99). I have four years of French and two years of German (About half of them both as honors). I'm not sure how that compares to other states, but two foreign languages is almost unheard of here.
[ *] Rank: My school doesn't rank students
[ *] Other stats: AP Lang - 5; AP US - 4
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): Officer in Red Cross Club, been on mission trips with a local church, taking care of animals (Chickens, ducks, quail), certified soccer referee, went on a school-organized trip to Milan (One of thirteen or so students, but it wasn't extremely selective), drumming (Outside of school)
[ *] Essays: Very good
[ *] Teacher Recs: Good (Very good?)
[ *] Counselor Rec: Good
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): None
[ *) Location/Person: Out of State
[ *] State or Country: Georgia
[ *] School Type: Public, fairly highly ranked - Newsweek has had it in it's top 500 these past few years, one of the top in the state
[ *] Ethnicity: White
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] Major strength/weakness: I have an excellent ACT and could write very good essays, but a mediocre GPA and little in the way of extra curriculars weighs me down
[ *] Other Factors/questions: I qualified for National Merit Scholarship (Top 50,000 PSAT scores out of 1,400,000 students) but have no idea yet when I'll advance further in the program. Could that help?
Also, should I apply for early decision? The University of Michigan is my top school and so if I don't make it, I think it'd be better to know early.

micahg, you've got amazing, AMAZING stats. the only thing that could hold you back (in my opinion) would be some of the bad grades you've gotten. but, I think you could easily make the adcom forget about that by writing fantastic essays and picking teachers who truly know you and what your interests are.

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): Engineering- Ross Direct Admit
[ *] SAT (one sitting): 2320 (800M, 800CR, 720W)
[ *] SAT IIs (if sent): 800ML2 800Chem
[ *] ACT:
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 3.92
[ *] Course load (# of AP/IB/H, special courses, etc.): 10 5s on APs before senior year, 4 post AP math courses before graduation
[ *] Rank: school doesn't rank
[ *] Other stats:
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): Pretty good ECs- nothing extraordinary but state level awards for writing, piano, math.. and a couple small national awards
[ *] Essays: haven't written... but i'm a decent writer?
[ *] Teacher Recs: good
[ *] Counselor Rec: good
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): Well-rounded?
[ *) Location/Person: Out of State
[ *] State or Country: NJ
[ *] School Type: Decent District Public, nothing amazing
[ *] Ethnicity: East Asian
[ *] Gender: Female
[ *] major strength/weakness: strength- well rounded; weakness- i have no real "hook"... asian.
[ *] Other Factors/questions: Want to major in IEOR.. also applying for Ross program. I'm also kind of wondering how good UMich is with merit awards to oos applicants. I'm probably not applying for honors college because I want to go into engineering but.. any other "honors" programs available?

are you saying you want to do the preferred admissions program to Ross, or apply to Ross once you get into michigan and start there?

you've got amazing SAT scores, GPA, and decent ECs. i don't think well-rounded (which you are) is a hook, though! just apply early and write great essays and you should get in. good luck!

All I can say is apply early....Cause even people with TOP stats got waitlisted/rejected for applying late.

I had a little above average grades..applied late..deferred/waitlisted/rejected

Friend of mine had a 4.0, 800 on all her SAT II's, 2240 SAT, excellent essays, and 5-6 5's on her APs.

Got into Stern, Georgetown, Carnegie...rejected at UM for applying late. She rejected their waitlist offer though, probably would've gotten the spot.
