The Official Williams 2014 Rejected Club

That’s my girl, oxy! LOL.

Ben - I think your stats are a little out of date, though. Cannot comment on NU, but for Tulane the SAT is 2120 1880 2000, while the ACT is 29-32 avg. 30.5 compared to NU 31.5. At least that is what they posted for the last class. Doesn’t change anything though as pertains to this discussion.

so Anthem, you would take HYP over Caltech?

fallen, oxy and ben, I see your points…

also it is healthy to go to a school a little farther away than 1.5 hours.

reese, I would think that Hamilton would hold its own with Carleton.

Any reasons why you favor Carleton significantly?

Can’t say much for most of your questions there JohnAdams, but I will say you should be able to go away as far as you are comfortable with, whether that’s 10 hours or .5

Carleton is more selective and less drenched in alcohol than Hamilton. Students at Carleton are happier per the Princeton review.

Oldbates, are you saying that Hamilton has a reputaion for drinking alcohol?

this is new to me.

Regarding being happy, it is my understanding that Hamilton students are amongst the happiest of them all, with very high alumni giving rates.

on the selective front:

Accetance rates:

Carleton - 30%
Hamilton - 30%

Carleton: Acceptance rate is 27.5%. Ranked 8th among LAC’s. ACT range: 29-33. SAT range: 1310-1490.

Hamilton: Acceptance rate is 28.1%. Ranked 21st among LAC’s. ACT range: 26-31. SAT range: 1300-1450.

Carleton is a markedly better school IMO. The rankings attest to this. Although the rankings certainly must be taken with a grain of salt, the difference between the 8th ranked school and the 21st ranked school is more than marginal. In terms of applicants from my school - all of the Hamilton attendees never would’ve had a prayer at getting into Carleton. I think there is some element of self-selection: studious intellectuals apply to Carleton, party-hearty preppy kids apply to Hamilton. That accounts for the similar admission rates. And yes, Hamilton has a notorious drug and alcohol culture.

Carleton’s the way to go. If I sound touchy, it’s probably because I’m a future Carl myself :).

So Drought, now you are accusing Hamilton College of having drug and alcohol problems?

again, this is the first time that I have seen this.

Are you sure that you want to go there?

regarding SAT’s, from the Hamilton common data:

the range is: 1,310 to 1,470, hardly much different than Carlton’s 1,310-1,490 range is it?

and now this:

“In terms of applicants from my school - all of the Hamilton attendees never would’ve had a prayer at getting into Carleton.”

when you make a statement like this, can you please tell us EXACTLY how many of the applicants from your school applied to both schools and what the results were?

Because, certainly, just making is statement like “they never would have had a prayer getting into Carleton” is not going to cut it.

thanks

PMed you with the stats my man.

I have been to Hamilton, and it’s a lovely school. The students are serious, but I would think Greek life casts a different feel on the school. I don’t think the vibe is as intellectual – maybe more preprofessional.

I don’t think the rankings are significant, but the atmosphere is.

mythmom, I understand that there are frats at Hamilton, but they don’t have buildings…so how can this interfere significantly with the “other” social life?

please state you test and gpa numbers. i am curious what williams rejects

Well, I don’t want to be too specific, but I do know that many social events are organized around Greek life.

That’s okay, if that’s what you want, but Carleton would be much different.

For roderick:

General Comments: Just this quote by rumi.
“Don’t grieve. Anything you lose comes round in another form.”

Also, congratulations Class of 2014. You probably deserved this more than I did.

thanks for the response , noonesfool. Great quote by rumi that we all can keep in mind!

I assume your net is still out there . There are many great schools that would have you and at which you will be fully engaged and successful.

JohnAdams honey, just go to Hamilton and you’ll see what we all mean. It’s on the Princeton review “hard liquor” list, so we aren’t exactly just shooting our mouths.

It’s fine if that’s what makes you happy, but Carleton wins the intellectual prize. It is the pearl of Midwest LACs, and underknown and underrated.(Nothing against Grinnell of course)

Drought, et al, there is a strong bias here. The 2010 Princeton Review of 381 Best Colleges does not rank Hamilton in the alcohol/drug arena at all. The college does not make those two lists but there are 40 other colleges who do.

Re: alums, I would bet Hamilton has even a stronger network of exuberant alums who are committed to the college and future students. Many more work in solid professional arenas (if they do not go to grad school). Making stereotypical statements when you have not either visited or know many people from Hamilton is not only non-scholarly, it is outright prejudiced. If I were to do that, I would comment on Carleton’s vast reputation as having students that are “geeky, nerdy and uncoordinated people with limited social skills.” But that would not be true.

I would argue that both Carleton and Hamilton are great liberal arts colleges. You would best find your argument more reasonable debating whether Carleton is better than other non-liberal arts schools for getting yourself educated. Otherwise, you just come off as elitist and pompous.

I am not saying anything against Hamilton, just that Greek life plays a big part in the social life I saw. I am not equating that with alcohol or lack of academic rigor.

My D was invited up from Barnard for some sorority do at Hamilton. She met her friend abroad in London and went, but my D is the kind who is allergic to sororities, etc, and went for her friend. There was certainly nothing wrong with this event, and the friend did live in this house, by my D is just against exclusivity.

Her friend did brilliantly at landing a job after Hamilton and I have tremendous respect for the college, however the campus culture wasn’t as suitable to my D as the college she attended.

That’s all I was saying.
