THE Ohio State University?

On Monday Night Football each week, they do player introductions where each player states their name and what college they went to. Almost every week there is at least one player who went to OSU. Yet for some reason, hardly any OSU alums call their alma mater "Ohio State", they all say with gusto, "THE Ohio State University." I've never heard any other school like that, where they put "THE" in front of the est of the college's name. So why do these Ohio State players (and other OSU alums I assume) put a definite article in front of their school's name?

By the way, my friend and I now call the school TOSU...

Hopkins is officially called The Johns Hopkins University, capitalized

There is quite a lot of that with THE University of Michigan as well. My high school English teacher (though that was in the dark ages) referred to it simply as THE UNIVERSITY, even though there were several other universities in the state at the time.

It just puzzles me why these athletes put so much emphasis on the "THE" in The Ohio State University...

In football, Ohio State fans say tOSU (The Ohio State University) because of their rich history. There are several teams with the acronym OSU (Okie St, Oregon State, etc), so Ohio State puts tOSU to signify Ohio State.

Us Ohioans say "Thee Ohio State University" because "Tha Ohio State University" sounds retarded. Beyond that, the only reason for the "the" is that OSU is the best football team ever to exist in college football. Plus THE biggest school in the nation, and (one of) THE (top 5) party school in the nation. Damn why did I go to Kent State?

I enjoyed watching the Alamo Bowl to find the announcers and ESPN ragging on "The" Ohio State University and its ethics problems.

You know, that is a very good question! I never noticed it. I went to their website, and there are actually logos (not all of them) with the word T ** H ** E over the words OHIO STATE. The word "THE" is definitely used as part of the entire school name in a fashion that you rarely see with other schools. There may be a reason for it, but I couldn't find it.

ohh goodness.. shall we start this again? i think it's dumb that people say THE Ohio State University, it's like.. oh really, i didn't know there was another "Ohio State University." anyways.. TOSU rocks!@# =)

"Us Ohioans say "Thee Ohio State University" because "Tha Ohio State University" sounds retarded."

i second that.. Thee sounds so much better, but other than that.. people don't really say "the." down in cincy anyways we just say Ohio State, simple as that.

i agree patientlywaiting. i live ~ 1/2 hr away from OSU, and my friends and i have always called it Ohio State or "OSU".
