The old classic discussion about School Transcript(GPA)

Hey all the fellow CC people,
I have the classic old question regarding school transcript that I was hoping to receive some fresh input from you guys. I know none of people here are admission officers, but really, you guys on CC are as close as it gets when it comes to insider information!

So it's a given that school transcript is the most significant factor for admission criteria that I'm sure you all know. At this moment, I am mostly considering Liberal Arts Colleges, and these schools particularly put far more weight into class grades than test scores. Correct?
But there is this issue about GPA which is pretty much the most useless thing ever. Schools across nation have their own system of GPA, and the numbers mean pretty much nothing to the application readers without class rank - the full context. But then what are those schools like mine who don't rank at all?
So then I guess this is where "the strongest curriculum given the opportunity" comes in? Like the school profile submitted with the guidance counselor rec explaining the rigor of classes taken by this applicant in his school. But what if you go to a crappy public high school who don't offer any APs and As just fall out of the sky if you only do your hw every night VERSUS exclusive prep schools that make your parents pay $40,000 each semester where you probably had to write applications, SSAT, and interviews to get into in the first place?????
This is kind of really confusing for me, and I just have absolutely no idea where I stand as an applicant.

O.K. SO FAR, the APs i have taken are French, music theroy, Envi sci, AB calc, english lit, studio art, and stats. My school offers ****load amount of ap classes(basically every possible ap out there from Collegeboard!), but the most they allow us to take are 2 or 3 per year, starting Junior Year. (Which isn't much.) So I am close to taking hardest classes from school curriculum, and of course I have BBBBBBBBs in all of them, which makes my "GPA" just so wonderfully 3.0
I mean, like some of you guys have already told me, 3.0 is quite preposterous!!! Especially when it will be compared to 4.0 and 4.5 from the easy public schools. I got 4s and 5s on my AP exams which I guess should level things up a bit, but still. I think I am literally the only person with 3.0 on this College Confidential website!!

I'm so confused/scared to death that this amazingly intellectual school in Midwest will have no idea what a difficult prep boarding school I go to in East Coast. It's an amazing school, but only well-respected in East Coast. AND I'm not exactly the smartest person in my class. Quite mediocre actually! But I imagine - I mean I HOPE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD - that my humdrum B- are more exciting than easy As from crappy easy schools.
Okay I think this thread has taken up a slightly venting attitude, I'm sorry. I don't mean to attack public schools. I'm actually becoming quite mad about why the hell did my parents choose to send me to a difficult school where they pay $80,000 per year so I can get Cs after working just as hard?

*IN A NUTSHELL:
My AP French teacher decided to give me a C, but I ended up nailing a 5 on the actual AP. This epitomizes my entire high school transcript. It doesn't matter how hard my school is, because the admission officers don't like Cs!!!! WHAT IS UP WIT THAT?

But really - where do YOU think I stand?
Wanna share your own situation about your school, your curriculum rigor, and GPA? (this is actually in the other thread)
Just tell me your opinions or ANY comments about what grades and how admission officers perceive them. DO GRADES THAT MUCH????
Thanks thanks thanks!

No matter how you look at it, a C isn't good. It probably dropped your class rank and GPA quite a bit. However, the 5 on the AP test is quite impressive. I would emphasize it in the "additional comments" section and also ask your counselor to write something about it.
