On CC, I have heard a lot of talk about that one outstanding EC that makes the applicant stand out and ultimately becomes the reason for his/her admission. Some examples are starting your own campaign, business, attending a UN conference, writing a successful blog, etc.

So please share the one EC that stands out the most in your application. If you've already been accepted then what was that one activity that you think was instrumental in your admission and if you are applying this year then which activity do you think will be instrumental ?

I have stayed in a Tibetan Buddhist nunnery under the direct guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. And when I came back from there I started my own signatory campaign for the recognition of Tibet and have been featured in the National Newspaper. I have worked extensively against Human Rights violation.

Is that an outstanding one? If yes, how should I highlight?

…I think more important than “standing out” is showing through your EC’s that your peers and adults view you as a leader. Showing leadership & excellence through your EC’s is more realistic than doing something really “unique”.

To those freaking out, dont worry you really don’t need an amazing EC. My best EC was being a varsity athlete (not even captain or anything). Just have some interests and dedication. Grades and test scores are by far the most important thing and other factors such as legacy, URM, etc. also can be very helpful.

I am the only member of my school’s academic league to have been there for 4 years, since freshman year, and I am now captain. Same for math league. Is that impressive or decent?

Let’s put it this way – Cornell will probably have 1000 applicants from student body presidents (not that I’m knocking this). I doubt very strongly they’ll have another one like yours. I think it will stand out, and make an excellent essay topic.

Here’s a discussion about “summer programs” by a Harvard aspirant but several alumni have given some philosophical advice (that I think should be heeded)
