The Pantyhose Debate!

Definitely wear tights. Lake Michigan can be cool. And either the jean jacket or a shawl. Again, it will be cool in the evening as there is usually a breeze.

I’m planning to wear pantyhose to my son’s wedding next weekend in Chicago. I just think they make my legs look better and they’ll provide some warmth as it cools off in the evening. I posted earlier in the thread that I’m wearing silver pumps with a navy tea-length dress. My preferred brand for the last several years is Hanes Silk Reflections Silky Sheer with control top. I usually buy one of the nude colors that closely matches my skin color. Around here you can still find them at some Macy’s stores, though not all, as I discovered last week.

That sounds perfect. Enjoy!

They make all of our legs look better!

Yeah, the no pantyhose look is a disaster for those of us with the pastiest of pasty white skin. Mine is so fish-belly white as to be blinding to the eye and not polished or professional in work or dress attire.

I am not inclined to maintain a year-round fake tan that does not look natural on me anyway. So I wear pants almost exclusively and tights when I can’t.

I hate one-size-fits-all fashion “rules” or trends. Let everyone wear whatever rise pants or whatever length skirt or whatever style collar or whatever leg covering looks best on them, periodt.

The last pantyhose I purchased were from the Nordstrom Anniversary sale, probably 10ish years ago. They are still in my drawer.
I did not wear pantyhose to my son’s wedding last September. I did have to use self-tanner on my feet because of tan lines at my ankles.
I have worn black tights, probably SPANX brand, within the last several years, but I can’t remember the last time.

I don’t disagree with you about “let every wear”…what works for them - but the reality is, for the most part that is a battle we put upon ourselves! There are plenty of clothing choices out there for “you to be you”. But the reality is, people worry what others will think about how they look.

I went with no hose for the first time to a wedding in early August. Last year I wore hose for all five wedding we attended and likely was the only one for several of them. It was the daughter of a friend and I am considerably older than the other moms in her friend group. My problem is very thick calves/ankles (bordering on cankles) even though I am not (currently) overweight. Some celulite and veins too. Like @conmama crepey knees now too so at or above the knee not great.

I found a midi-length dress that looked good which hid most. Also found some comfortable sandals, as footwear is also a challenge. I even tried on some dressy pants outfits but none of them looked good.

I actually bought self tanner which helped some and had thought about (but did not end up getting) a spry tan. The self tanner helped some but I still hate my legs and would have felt better in hose. But everyone told me not to wear panty hose.

I agree that wearing hose should be an OK choice. Why is it considered the hallmark of an “old lady”? However, it is also on us. Likely anyone looking may be “Huh, she is wearing stockings” and then not give it another thought.

Hope you all enjoy the weddings, whatever you chose for your legwear (or not).

I do wear panty hose in more formal dresses. BTW, so does Kate Middleton.

So do those Sheertex really last?

When D got married 8 years ago, I went to a local Nordstrom and a saleslady helped me pick out some very sheer hose (I seem to recall they were Donna Karan “The Nudes”). She helped me pick a shade that pretty much “disappeared” on my legs but gave a bit of coverage. When I mentioned I was wearing hose, my D and her bridesmaids were surprised because they could hardly tell.

Hope this is helpful.

I also agree with all the others who wear Nude shades. I think hose help create a more put together look. Plus, let’s face it, hose create a smoother appearance on the backside.

So funny…. to be fashionably acceptable, Sheertex ad (on FB - links to sheertex.com) says “TIGHTS” - methinks the photo looks an awful lot like pantyhose.

To be fair, a lot of people call pantyhose tights. In fact, that’s what I usually call them.

Yea, terminology can vary. I grew up with a mother that used the term “stockings”. But as adult, L’eggs etc are pantyhose (if sheer)… tights are dark colored and opaque.

I’ve actually been on the hunt a few years for ivory sheer pantyhose. Had a pair that looked lovely in springtime with ivory pumps but got a run. Along the way it was surprising how hard it was to find them even in nude color.

Do people still wear the pantyhose “knee highs” (or other varied lengths - remember “footies/footsies” that were made of pantyhose material) under pants???

I tossed all mine years ago.

(again, ok if you wear them! Just doing an informal poll. )

Tights and hose are the same thing, depending on where you live.

@abasket i used to buy knee highs to fill with kitty litter. I put them in my son’s sports shoes.

But Kate is following Royal protocol I believe.

I can’t stand wearing shoes without socks or similar. I still have no show socklets in my drawers, but I usually just wear socks under pants.

Can anyone tell me really what is the difference between pantyhose and tights? I find both equally annoying to wear and have mostly gravitated to just pretending my pants are dressy enough.

Agreed…and old, pasty white skin is worse. BtW, you can often buy pantyhose in Walgreen’s and CVS—and for a lot less than $55. I rarely wear it because I usually wear pants these days, but even on young women I think bare legs in twenty degree weather look silly–and probably feel worse.
