The Paul Tulane Award: 50 More Full Tuition Scholarships

Vitrac, can’t pm yet but D is def interested is CSS. Don’t want to just add random posts to get to have PM status. She’ll start working on it now that she has her applications under control, but any advice you can give would be great! She has long-standing cs involvement with one institution/entity and great relationship with the director of volunteers, so that should help. But…she is a 2 sport varsity athlete so her overall time commitment (except in the summer when she is able to do more) mightn’t be enough. She has researched similar cs ops at Tulane and has one is really, really wants to participate in, should she matriculate there. Any general advice you can give on approaching the application would be great!

Thanks for PM Vitrac, but for some reason the email address came back @*******

Will just have to post something useful in another thread and then I can PM!

Gee Mail, what a pain!

Back to the PT, do you guys 1) know if they will send an email confirming that they received my essays and 2) have any idea when they will get back (what does rolling actually mean)?

1) Probably not. It would be wise to either send them by some certified method such as FedEx or USPS certified mail, or follow up yourself.

2) I thought I answered this. Must have been in another thread. None of us know exactly what they mean, but my best guess is that after all the applications are in (Dec. 15), they will start evaluating. I would think there would be an immediate elimination of those that do not meet the academic qualifications. Again, this is just my opinion, but someone applying for the PTA with a 3.2 GPA and 1900 SAT is not going to be considered no matter the essays. Then, depending on how many remain, there might be another cut of those essays that are obviously not very good after a quick read. Then, having a pretty good feel for the quality of the rest, awards will be made as winners are read. These people will be notified at that point. So there could be days or even weeks difference between the times the first winners are notified and the last.

This is different that the DHS where all the notifications are sent out at the same time in late February.

I don’t think I saw “academic requirement minimums” on the DHS or PT scholarships. Are those listed somewhere or are they just based upon what has been the past history. Just wondering if it is pointless to have my child work on these (when there are so many other things going on) if there will be an automatic elimination based upon academic/standardized test thresholds. Are you saying that essays or projects are only judged for the highest performers?

The DHS guidelines can be seen here: [Tulane University - Tulane Dean’s Honor Scholarship](http://tulane.edu/financialaid/grants/dhs.cfm) They are purposely a bit vague, and the 100 number of awards they mention has actually only been 75 the last 4 years. They used to suggest that applicants had SAT scores of 2250+ or ACT of 33+, I don’t see that stated as specifically now. As you can see, they simply suggest that applicants “score near the top of the range”.

It is harder to say for the Paul Tulane since they don’t publish any real specifications, but here [Tulane Admission: Merit Scholarships](http://admission.tulane.edu/aid/merit.php) they talk about the DHS and PTA together, so I assume that students selected would be near the top statistically. They also use the more recent 75 number for the DHS, and say about 50 for the PTA. I cannot speak for the judging committees, I can only say that in the past all the DHS winners have had those kinds of stats. As I said in another post somewhere, it is primarily an academic achievement award after all, and there are hundreds of students who apply for it that have the kind of stats those guidelines suggest.

The PTA is new this year, so besides not having any specific or even vague guidelines other than that potential “guidelines by association” mentioned, there is no history either. So it really is impossible to say. I don’t know what Faye (head of admissions) would say if you wrote and asked her. Might be interesting.

on a whim, my son applied Tulane as he received a waiver on the application fee. Tulane’s acceptance letter came today. We found out that he has been selected as a Presidential Scholar with a merit scholoarship in the amount of $108,000 over the four years. My son is interested in finance. i was wondering if someone could provide some insight in Tulane’s undergraduate program in the area of business/economics/finance. He has until December 15 to apply for Paul Tulane Award.

Unless he is accepted by his dream school via ED (we shall find out on 12/12/12), Tulane is a serious contender. thanks!

Eleanor

Hi Eleanor - Congrats to your son on the acceptance and excellent scholarship!

Finance is considered one of Tulane’s strongest departments, so it is great that your son is interested in that. Of course Tulane has a number of excellent areas for study, so if he were to change his mind about his major (which happens to well over half of all undergrads everywhere) he would still be in great shape. There have been a number of posts in the past about Tulane finance, and I think if anything it is even stronger now with some exciting new programs at the business school, especially concerning international business. Take a look at these and if there are still questions, come on back at us and we can try and answer.

There is some overlap in the information, of course. And it is a bit dated although still accurate; there have been fewer inquiries as of late. I think that is because the school is getting to be pretty well known for business education by many people out there so they have fewer questions/doubts than they used to.

Hi FC: thank you for taking the time to reply and your contribution to this board. i will pass on the info to my son. Even with the merit scholarship, the cost to attend Tulane is still more than our top instate university, UC Berkley. I know for sure that we don’t qualify for any financial aid. Paul Tulane Award is the only way to afford Tulane.
Eleanor

That happens a lot, especially when there is a great instate option like Berkeley. My niece started there this fall actually. She is instate also. Anyway, don’t forget about the DHS, which is also full tuition. Although it would be tough to pull together a project now I would think.

Quick question–do the full tuition scholarships include room and board or is it just the 46,000 or so for tuition

full tuition is just that–full tuition, not room and board

And just to be completely clear, it also does not cover the fees. So you are still responsible for room, board, fees, books, and transportation. I think the fees are about $3,000 a year, so the award is worth about $42,000 out of the total cost of attendance, which will be about $60,000

When you submitted your Paul Tulane application, did you receive a confirmation email that it was received?

In the past, I don’t think they have. For both this and the DHS, given the magnitude of the potential result, I think it is always a good idea to confirm receipt with your admissions counselor.

So do we have any stats on the winners of PTA? My daughter doesn’t have the top 5% or 33+ ACT (she was 32), but is still interested in this scholarship. I’m just wondering if it’s worth it for her to give it a shot (one thing I’ve discovered about her since she’s been applying to colleges is that she is a DAMN good writer!), or will she not really be a contender due to the numbers?

^ same question, for both PTA and DHS. Any anecdotal info on students in the 31-32 range receiving these? I understand you don’t know until you try, but DS is trying to be smart about using his limited time.

As you can imagine, I am reluctant to ever tell anyone not to try. I don’t think Tulane ever publishes the stats of the actual winners, just the guidelines you already know. The other factor is that it is always a balancing act as far as stats go. So for example, if someone had a 4.0 UW GPA with 8 AP courses and was #1 in their class, but had a 32 on the ACT or 2180 on the SAT, I would think it would be worth their while to go for it, especially if the other parts of their resume were strong. Similar advice would apply for a 2350+ SAT (35+ ACT) but a GPA that maybe put them around the 10% level of their class. So with a 32, if she is just out of the top 5% I would say that people usually regret the things they don’t do, especially if she has a decent number of AP courses (assuming her school offers them).

Sure it is a long shot and time is a precious commodity, but it isn’t out of the question, especially if they are excellent writers (PTA) and/or extremely creative (DHS). Just MHO, but being on the edge of the stat line isn’t an automatic no, I don’t think. Certainly if someone had a 30 ACT and/or a 3.5 UW GPA that put them at around the 25% level of their class, I would advise that there are probably better uses of their time. The info you have provided is limited, to be sure, but it would appear you might not be in that situation. Depends on the details.

@fallenchemist my d has been accepted with a presidential scholarship $30K & honors college…she is very excited and has started to think about her DHS project…does it have to be a video or in video electronic format? she has an idea in her head to create something but she cannot send it…would have to photograph it…can you pls give her some guidance regarding a project that is not a video…
