The Perfect College

I am currently a freshman at Northeastern U. For many reasons, I will be leaving. I will be transferring to somewhere else for the Fall of 09. I have already applied to two places. I have done tons of research, visited a lot of schools, etc...but I just want an honest opinion from anyone of what the perfect school for me might be. Here are the characteristics I came up with after thinking about it for a long time.

I want it to be a mid-sized school. I'm thinking the perfect number for me is between 4,000 and 10,000. But, I would be willing to look at anything that's between 2,000 and 12,000. I just really can't deal with a HUGE school or a teensy-tiny school. (Northeastern is too big for me...about 15,000 students.

I want the school to be more known for its "artsy" majors, such as Theatre, English, Communications, Music, etc...than for "sciency" majors such as Engineering, Math, etc.

I am a theatre/musical theatre major. I want a school with a good theatre program, but it doesn't have to be a huge fancy nationally-recognized one. I want one where I will learn a lot in many different areas of theatre, and one that's not so intense because I don't learn well in those type of settings..I need a theatre department that is more nurturing than scary. I want a BA, not a BFA.

I live in New Jersey, so I want to stay on the East Coast. I don't want to go anywhere that's more than about 6 hours away. So I'm looking to stay in the New York, DC, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, possibly Virginia area.

I'd say I'm basically looking in the middle level of schools. When I applied as a Freshman, I got accepted to schools such as American University (which I'm considering for transfer), Northeastern University, Loyola College of Maryland, Saint Joseph's University, West Chester University (which I'm considering for transfer), etc. So I'm definitely not going to get in to Ivy League schools or anything very close to that..but I do have the credentials to get in to schools of similar caliber to the ones I listed.

My first thought was Carnegie Mellon, though perhaps you have considered that and decided your grades/profile would not be competitive enough since you mention looking at schools on a tier similar to the ones you listed. I also am aware that Syracuse University or one of the SUNY Schools may have what you are seeking. I don’t recall which SUNY school is noted for theater, but it might be worth your checking into.

you must have already applied to emerson

yea i was going to say emerson too

JMO, but I think there’s a much bigger difference between 2k and 12k students than between 12k and 15k (and I’m not just referring to the math ;)). Both the academic experience (eg. range of courses offered) and the student community will be very different in a school with 2k and NU, but between 12k and NU I doubt you’ll be able to notice a difference at all. The character of the student body is another question, but for numbers, I don’t think there’s much difference between schools from 10-15k.

Don’t musical theater majors have to audition? Is this about academic qualifications at all?

Yeah, that’s why I said I’d prefer a BA MT/theatre program as opposed to a BFA…I don’t want to have to audition…I auditioned for a bunch of MT programs last year. I am probably looking more towards a BA in Theatre at this point. However, I was accepted into American’s audition MT program last year, so I’m pretttttty sure I could get in again.

And entomom, I’m thinking more in the 4,000-6,000 range, but I just wanted to hear some opinions from people about schools without worrying about that specific limitation.

Whats your gpa?
Wesleyan would be a good match.

I have a 2.8 :(. I know it’s bad…it’s because I failed a math class last semester. But my High School Gpa was very good…(about a 3.7).

With that GPA, your location, and your preference of a mid-sized school, I’d take a look at Seton Hall University…

hmm I’ll look into it thanks. I have a friend who goes there.

Anyone else have a suggestion?

a 2.8 will never ever get you into emerson or wesleyan.
stay at northeastern, get your GPA up (way up) to at least a 3.3 or 3.4 and then try again…sorry!

Looking for the perfect school eh?

The Wharton School of Business at Florida State University combines both academic excellence and a robust population of attractive girls with ample parties. What, sayeth thou? No such school doth exist?

If people talk like that there I don’t wanna go.
