uchicago social life: what is it like? is it really that nerdy? not trying to sound rude or anything but that's the reputation

look at the other posts, and you can gather that fun does not die at chicago. chicago has such a mixed crowd of people...its basically like any other college, it is what you make of it. sure, you can stay in on a friday or saturday night with a good number of other people and study. Or, you can go downtown and hit up a couple of parties. All depends on your mood.

Depends on your definition of fun.

There are groups of students heading downtown to go clubbing every weekend, at the same time as some kids head to the A level of the Reg to study. The Reg is the library. The A level is where the library snack bar is, BTW...

After talking to my D about her first year experience, and now observing students first hand ( I now work at U of C and live near campus, I can say with some authority that you really need to make your own decision by contacting UofC students and seeing for yourself on a campus visit. Each student has his/her own definition of fun. A kid who is looking for big 10 style campus parties will probably be unhappy at Chicago. (been there, done that - MSU undergrad...). UofC kids definitely have fun, have parties (get drunk) and so forth, but they have their own approach to fun and parties. I suspect the drink and act drunk the same as kids everywhere else, though.

Is it nerdy? I'm sure many of the kids were called nerds in HS. I also know many of them could care less about the term. If you want a fashion forward campus, better to look up in Evanston or several of the Ivies.
