I'm one of the students who are stuck in a quandary. I got a 2200 on the SAT I in one sitting. I think a 2200 sucks...because 2200 is like...the cutoff for a good score. I'm aiming for HYPS, but a 2200 may seem like I only go for the bare minimum, yet the yields for retaking it sucks. Should I chance rteaking it to raise my score? Or should I stay with a 2200 because retaking it may look bad? Alot of students may be in this quandary. I'd say between a 2150 and 2250 is the doldrums for an SAT taker thats aiming for HYPS. Not sure if a 2200 is good enough.

What scores do you have on individual sections?
If you have 730/730/740 I see your dilemma.
But if you have something like 800/800/600 I would definitely take it again. I am wondering too. I have a 700 verbal but a total of 2260. Is it worth retaking to up the 700?

yikes 750 M 710 Verb (Which i'm 60% sure i can raise) 740 Writing

It will be more difficult for you to raise the math and writing to produce a better score. I would consider retaking but would only expect an increase in the verbal. 740s and 750s are hard to raise. You would have to literally get them all right or miss only one.
Also, do you want to sacrifice that whole one-sitting thing? I am wondering if there is any value to that.

don't worry about it guys! A 2200 is awesome! If you really really want to raise it, then study writing and math like a maniac (trust me my math skills suck but i owned SAT math by studying all the concepts that kept tripping me up, like circle geometry, averages, probability, and time/rate). writing is also easy to prep for: study a lot of grammar, use a workbook for the old SAT2 writing (they no longer make them b/c they are outdated, but you can buy them on amazon). the SAT2 writing = SAT1 writing. so practice with those prep books and be very very careful on the test. check your work many times in writing: when identifying sentence errors you can't read carelessly or you'll miss things

I have 2180 ... ( 740 M , 690 V, 750 W) .... i am thinkin of retaking too... but i am scared of scoring lower in writing and messing it up ...

supergaut, a 2180 is FINE. I know a girl who had to take the SAT 5 times to get a 2190, and she got into harvard, yale, princeton, jhu, duke, etc etc

After 2150 or so dont colleges (namely upper-ivys) consider your SAT good enough and focus on other parts of your app?

Hahahaha that's a good one. Try "2300+," or even "2350+."

well thats a bit extreme anonymous, but there is definietly a difference. I'm reatking my 800M 800W 680CR. I have decded to forget about the one day score thing. I'll make sure to ace reading and get a 2400 cumulative. Anyways, that how all the good colleges do it.

The one day score thing doesn't really matter. And I don't think anonymous is being extreme. A 2200 and a 2400 are not viewed the same, and a 2300 and 2400 aren't viewed the same. I'm thinking 2350+ and it's all good.

guess what.... it's not all about test scores. A 2200 is a great score and won't be looked down upon. You must have other things going for you or a 2400 won't even cut it.

Of course you can retake it. Only colleges in the west look at one sitting scores (some). Colleges combine ur best...don't worry about it. And hopefully ur other areas are strong enough that it won't make THAT much of a difference.

While it may be true that a 2400 won't cut it if you don't have anything else going for you, somebody with a 2400 who is ranked at the top of their class and has only a few ECs will have an excellent chance. Some people need great test scores to have a shot

Was that a joke. Most top colleges, especially ivies, care about ec's a lot more than +200 on an SAT score...They want people who will change the world for the better, not someone who ONLY knows how to score high on a test. From what I hear, places like MIT and...northwestern? appreciate +200 points MUCH more than other top colleges. You have to be well rounded. Someone with just a 2400 on their app won't get into Harvard. Someone really well-rounded who does a lot of things in their lives and has a 2100 and good grades will have a good chance of getting in.

Is this a joke? Oh yeah, 2200 sucks big time. Are you retarded or something?
