The Political Compass Test

^ Look in the Parents Cafe - Election and Politics section the vast majority of poster there are extremeists.

^ The folks in the Parents Cafe - Election and Politics section are NOT extremists.

I wish they were, but they quite simply aren’t.

Economic Left/Right: 2.62

Actually, it is. Whether you believe in his philosophies or not (I tend to agree with some, but not all, of Marxism), it’s always good to read political philosophers of distinction. Marx is one. Ayn Rand is a mediocre author who writes about nothing for pages on end while at the same time vomiting her politics into her books. She’s not a political philosopher, she’s just a bad writer.

^ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Objectivism_(Ayn_Rand)</a> ?

It might be in your argument’s best interest to link to her actual Wikipedia page, instead of making me look for what your point was.
So Wikipedia brands her as a philosopher; I disagree. However, I concede that it’s just opinion. Sorry about that.
Doesn’t change the fact that her writing is atrocious.

I’m surprised no one else ended up in the middle, you’d think it would be a little more common.

Awesome.

EDIT: <a href=“The Political Compass”>The Political Compass;

Well, it looks like I’m in the little green square with everyone else. =)

I’d be surprised if there were people in the middle. Mostly because of the way this quiz was formatted… you either had to ‘agree’ or ‘disagree’ with everything, so it left no option for “oh well I don’t feel one way or another”… basically, if you were in the dead middle, you’d have contradicted yourself throughout, right?

A philosopher is someone dedicated to studying a philosophy, which is a doctrine or set of beliefs. Ayn Rand spent a considerable amount of time studying her doctrine, objectivism. Therefore, she was a philosopher.

I totally agree. Atlas Shrugged was a painful experience for me. But I certainly didn’t find the little Marx I have read enjoyable or of literary merit either. It is frequently read not for its writing, but for its ideas. The same should therefore be done with Ayn Rand.

^I agree. I don’t think [many] people read Ayn Rand for any sort of incredible writing quality. That’s why people either adore her books or hate them - the whole POINT is the ideas conveyed through the books, same with Marx (all imo).
