The Politics & Values Program

Hey guys, I have decided to apply to this program, however if someone could help me on few points:

In the letter they ask for a" resume with academic credentials (test scores, etc.) or simply a photocopy of your GWU application;" I applied through the CommonApp so how could I do that? Should I just write a resume with my test scores/predicted scores ? and if so will I need to prove this by resending my SAT scores through the collegeboard or something?

As for the essay, I read on the website that it should be around 500 words. I was thinking of submitting my Internal Assessment that I wrote for IB history because it’s one of the only essays I wrote on a political issue. However it’s much longer than required ( ~1900 words) and the form is different than in typical essays, as it is separated into different parts, such as - a plan, the evidence, evaluation of the sources, the analysis and a conclusion.
My other option would be to submit one of the essays I wrote for an application to another university since I also discussed a political issue in it. What do you think I should do?

You don’t need to formally submit your scores, and you can send estimates of what you think your AP/related tests scores are. You should have a working resume, so also email that with your scores listed.

I think you can use your IB assessment, just take an excerpt, probably the analytic/conclusion portion. You can explain this in your application, and say something like if you would like to see the whole work, feel free to email me.

I think you can still access common app, so you could consider taking a screenshot?

I wouldn’t do the university app, still with a graded/formal paper - unless you think the app is reallllyy insightful. I’ll let you know my opinion if you PM it to me.

Why do you have to live in Thurston?

Good question…

Maybe to see if you can resist temptation? To see if you can still seek virtue in an environment of vice?

Aristororty, what you said makes sense! and my common app is def not that insightful so I think I’ll just stick to a resum

and they say sarcasm does not come across on the computer

indeed. a couple exclamation points go a long way…

whatever. no good deed goes unpunished.

actually really appreciate your input you have been very helpful.

i just wish Thurston wasn’t a criteria as some kids don’t want to live there or at least aren’t sure.

It really isn’t that bad… and with pv usually gets you at least one good roommate. you just sort of have to deal with the fact that there will usually be noise until at least 1am every night.

you meet more people and will probably be glad you got the craziness out of the way freshman year.

hey, guys. I am an Elliott student. I am thinking whether I should apply the program, because it seems that the deadline is coming…Personally I am interested in the theme. However I do not yet decide the field I will concentrate on. As a international student, I have merely SAT scores and I am not very much familiar with the format of a resume. So would you give me some advice about the resume? Is there any chance I may get the part?

I appreciate your help.

zhouxy-I’m also an Elliot freshman. I looked into the requirements for the Elliot School and bc of my particular interests in languages and international affairs in the Middle East, I decided that the P&V program really wasn’t something I really wanted to do. Think a little more about what you want to do before committing yourself to the program, then if it looks like its a good fit for your interests, go for it. Best of luck!

You will do approximately 200-250 pages of intensive reading on Islam and the Middle East in semester two, and probably have a guest speaker.

two questions:

1) will all your roommates be in the P&V program if you are in it?
2) does the submitted essay have to be arguing an issue b/c in AP gov this year we basically just did reports on things like supreme court justices, supreme court cases, etc. all of which were just like 2 page reports. do they want something more analytical/argumentative than that?

At least one, if not two or three, of your roommates will be in the program, depending on how many people are accepted this year and how they are formatting the rooms in Thurston.

Analytical writing is preferred if you have it. Be wary if you are submitting reports on the court. The professor is an expert on the subject.
