I think that the way EC's are viewed is flawed.

For example, I am in Forensics, and I won a gold medal at state. I spent a reasonable amount of time on it and it will be seen as a positive.

Then I am president/captain of the science olympiad team/science club. Science club meets a few hours a week, but we dont do anything. Still, even though I don't do much, i get the benefit of being "President of the Science Club and Captain of the Science Team"

On the other hand, I am in Mock Trial, which bascially runs my life. It takes forever (2 hours a day, everyday now) We are preparing for regionals. Even though I spend all my time on it, if we don't win regionals (which i doubt we will,) All I get for my App is "Mock Trial Team Member."

I think its lame that I can get so many more benefits from doing sci-oly only a little bit a week, while i recieve nothing (tangible anyways) from mock trial.

I cant waste an essay saying how i did well on these things, and even if i was gonna write an essay on this, why would i talk about mock trial, when i can make up a bunch of stuff about sci oly? (i suppose that would be dishonest though)

So yeah, i guess that is how it works and i cant do anything about it. Still, even though i dont get a boost in admissions from mock trial, i like doing it because it is fulfiling. oh well, whatever.

I visited Stanford a while back. There quote on ECs was "We don't care what you participated in, we care what you did with it". Give details about your Forensics and Mock Trial experiences, and responsible adcoms will not be put off.

By the way, I'm in L/D debate myself, congrats with the state win!

...I think rec letters can play a big role here explaining that you're in an extremely demanding mock trial program in addition to the science thing...I think they can downplay the science for you and up the work load you put into mock trials

same thing happens to me between stage crew and amnesty international...our amnesty is sort of inactive, but stage crew sometimes has to meet every day in a week to prepare for assemblies, shows, and plays

Well, why would i want to downplay a club i got a leadership position in? I mean, if i just make it seem like its a big deal, it will seem more impressive. Also, even though i like mock trial a lot more, why try to up play it? i dont have any tangible proof that i'm good at it. we have no captains, and we dont have any awards. i mean i would rather play up mock trial, but whats the point? is it suicide to say i like mock trial more than science?

i think i fundamentally misunderstood your post

Let me see if I get this straight...although you contribute less time to Science Olypiad, you feel like you get more recognition for it than for Mock Trail which you say you spend TONS of time doing

^^if I understood that correctly, then remember this: passion can't be faked; although Mock Trial may seem much less of an impressive activity b/c you don't get any awards, chosing activites based on recognition is extremely immature...if you like mock trials more, then tell more about it...why do you spend so much time on it for so little recognition? be completely honest...i doubt they'd ding you for enjoying an activity with less recognition
