That site will explain the essay length and prompts for the common app. The UChicago supplement prompts are those listed by the OP (choose 1 and respond), likely a “Why UChicago” prompt asking why do you want to go to UChicago (such as “How does the University of Chicago, as you know it now, satisfy your desire for a particular kind of learning, community and future?”) and possibly a “What are your favorite things?” essay prompt for an optional essay (such as “Share with us a few of your favorite books, poems, authors, films, plays, pieces of music, musicians, performers, paintings, artists, blogs, magazines, or newspapers. Feel free to touch on one, some, or all of the categories listed, or add a category of your own.”)

I’m a little confused with the 5th prompt. It’s essentially open prompt, right? Or is the essay about coming up with the prompt, i.e. finding the question instead of the answer?

And by invent a past for it means fiction, right?

Generally, it means open prompt. Although your idea about finding the question instead of the answer could be a interesting and not common way to go about it.

And yeah, make up the past. Or not? These questions are pretty open so you’re free to interpret however you want.

Can you? Yes. Should you? Only if you can make it work to reveal the authentic you. Don’t go for a gimmick just for the sake of being different. Your first priority is to reveal something about you or the way you think (the way you think isn’t necessarily effectively revealed through a fictitious story).
