The Reading Thread for ACT December 2009

Umm it asked “Which of the following sums up the main point of the passage” for the poem passage

Every single answer choice was in quotes (referring to the passage). I remember the first answer choice was like about the girl she met who was also a “poemist”

jack- you are referring to the passage about the black astrophysicist where the answer was “reach for the stars”

mabs is referring to the passage about the palestinian poet, and i cannot remember the exact answer but i believe it was the quote about poetry helping us understand each other or something. i know it was in the middle of the passage. (2nd or 3rd paragraph?)

@vcooper

Yes I believe I put that as well

:)

ohhh yeah the answer was reach for the stars right?
and regarding that question, i don’t remember either but i think I picked D and it was something about poetry helping relationships, something like that?

^yea that sounds familiar

What about the poetry passage? Does anybody remember the questions for that one?

yea lets start a list of those questions

can someone please explain the context of the “facilitated” question. what were the other choices?

it was facilitated. to describe the water cycle towards organic chemicals

What about the poetry passage? Does anybody remember the questions for that one?

yea there were shadows = barriers

which group conflicts with the author’s viewpoint

which quote sums up the passage

and some others

@zlz - the facilitated question’s alternate options were something like:
these are the root words of the actual choices because i cant remember their form
-compete
-peripheral (i think)
-facilitated
-illustrated

—i think the question was “water’s relationship with the biological cleansing can best be described as…” or something along those lines

the only logical answer was facilitated, essentially meaning “helped” or “provided the means for,” because water basically did the work that enabled the biological cleansing or whatever it was called. it’s not illustrated because that would mean water is an example, its not compete because water aided the process as opposed to going against it, and its not peripheral because water was a key component in the process.

The astrophysicist question was not even on the reading section, i am pretty positive that was on the English section.
As for the quote in the poem passage, I am pretty sure it said something like poetry connects an era to era, land land…right?
There was a question in the paper passage that said which was not mentioned. Was it like the ergonomists or whatever?

zeek- it was paper ceos

what quote are you talking about from the poetry passage?

In the paper passage the question was about piling papers or what did a cluttered desk mean… was it that the worker did not yet know how to go about filing the labeling the papers?

In the first passage, was the answer to why individual quirks are shown because when people are confined to tight spaces with each other or something that they are bound to come out?

The answer to why people begin to not love poetry was too much analyzation

The author liked to let her students all give their own interpretation of a poem when she was not sure on the meaning of it, accepting all of them and NOT deciding on a single one.

“In the paper passage the question was about piling papers or what did a cluttered desk mean… was it that the worker did not yet know how to go about filing the labeling the papers?”

I think this was something about not being able to pick/organize one’s ideas.

What question was not directly answered in the paper passage?

I put why the paper was the most common type of paper.

for the first paragraph why had all the animals died?
I put they only kept the useful animals

Poetry passage why did author include all of the poets?
To show the variety of poetry

Poetry passage paragraph describing how she learned about nature through poetry I said poetry provides a link between real things and nature or something

@master
agree with all

space essay:
planet lacked islands
people knew each other’s personalities well
