The Regent's Scholarship is ruining my life!

Part of my financial aid package included the Regents Scholarship and the only information was about how I had been eligible and I accepted the offer. Now they've sent me more information on it and I'm starting to think it's not worth it. Everything they send makes me feel like they're treating me like a complete idiot who cannot think for them self.
It's 20k/4 years or 5k every year, which is a TON of money but I am required to live in mosher, take clustered courses and have a freshman course load of 12-13 hours.

I have an honors scholarship and wanted to live in the honors dorms but now I can't.
Also, I have no idea what clustered courses are. What are clustered courses? Would I even be able to take honors classes because of this?
I really want to take more than 12 hours my freshman year. By taking so little will I graduate later?

If I don't fill out the contract and they revoke my scholarship is there any other financial aid I can receive from a&m?

If there are ways I can get 5k and not take this scholarship I will most definitely not turn in this contract, if not, I think I may cry myself to sleep every night :(

Hello…anyone in that brain of yours…you have a $20,000 scholarship. Do you know how many kids would love a scholarship like that. You are a spoiled brat if you think it is ruining your life. I don’t know about your parents but if my kid is offered $20,000 and told to live in a certain dorm, then that is exactly what they will do. They are all old, small and tons of fun. My daughter will be living on campus and just hopes she gets one of her top three choices.

If you really have legitimate questions about a scholarship ruining your life, I believe you need to call someone at aTm and get some official advice.

I have a feeling it is a 12-13 hour MINIMUM amount of hours. I have a hard time seeing them force you to take that low of a number.

"Take 12-13 hours of coursework to get a feel of your abilities before taking a heavy load. "
And it’s not even for just a semester, it’s for all of freshman year.
They even have the four classes already picked out too because they’re all clustered classes. So for freshman year I’d be taking Math 151/Math 152, ENGR 111/ENGR 112, PHYS 218/PHYS 208, STLC 101/STLC 102 and that’s it.

you have to take thoes courses… you are getting money to do it.
what is the problem?
If you are that worried about it - dont take the money and take what you want. Problem solved. I guess I do not understand your problem and how this is ruining your life.
It takes 120 hours to graduate - that is 15 hours a semester average. At some point you will have to take 18 hour semesters to compensate for the lighter freshman year. Why not take the advice and money? Control issues some?

klparker has a point. The classes they have you in to take right now comprise nearly all of the engineering CBK classes that you will need. The only one missing is Chemistry which you can take care of with either a) AP Credit b) Summer School or c) take it the following year. I would recommend the second choice if chemistry is not directly related to your major. The other classes missing for you freshman year are Health and a core curriculum elective which you can make up anytime in the next three years or again at summer school or with AP credit. Things may not be as bad as they seem. Call the financial aid office and question them about this.

This scholarship is for families that make under $40k a year…my family makes a little more than that and I’d be doing cartwheels if we received that much $ for school. Let someone who could REALLY use the help take the scholarship! Try being more grateful !

Have friends who got this scholarship and they definitely took more then 12 hours. And as was said before if you are in engineering you have to take all those courses anyways.

Clustered classes are good - much easier to register that way - but you are in the same classes with the same people. But these are huge classes - it’s not like you’ll get tired seeing the same people in each class. And living in Mosher is good especially when you need to work on group projects outside of class - easy to get together when everyone lives in the same dorm. Sounds like a great deal to me!

My mom is a single parent & she makes less than 40k a year, ugh i’d die for that scholarship. Cus my stuff is going to be paid for with nothing but loans…
Appreciate what you’ve been given.

check into Aggie assurance

Do you think the options you want to pursue are worth ~20k in your future life?
Going from the financial perspective, if you think that the other classes will earn you more than 20k later in life, then take them and drop the scholarship. That is the sound financial choice right now.

For me, I would have no idea which classes would be the ones which made the difference. It could be possible that the choice which made you the most money later on in life is going with the Regents scholarship. I mean, we haven’t even been to college yet. How our we really supposed to know what we want if we have yet to experience anything related? In your situation, I would go with the scholarship, let TAMU take care of me, and if things aren’t to my liking, start seeing how I could go above and beyond.
