I recently got a mail-in order catalogue from UCR's Residence Hall Linens ? XL Sheets, Linens, Dorm Bedding stating that I should at least purchase a 3-piece sheet set because standard twin size bed sheets wouldn't fit the residence hall's provided mattress. Even the letter that accompanied the packet stressed how this mattress was a little longer and annoying to find the proper bedsheet for. Is this some kind of marketing ploy or are they telling the truth, because I've never heard of such a thing before haha. Has anyone else purchased or considered purchasing sheets from this website?

I’ve gotten 2 of those. Looks like a marketing ploy to me. I don’t even think they come from UCR directly. The sheets are extra long twin. Those are pretty much standard for all dorm rooms. They may be a little harder to find in regular stores, but you can find them. I ordered some on Amazon. I hate marketing ploys.

Not sure about that web site, but pretty much all dorms are XL Twin (NOT standard twin). So OP, you do indeed need to purchase special sheets. You can probably buy them from that website, or this time of year sometimes places like Target & Walmart have off to college-areas where they sell them (that can be kind of hit and miss, though). And there are other online sites (as DJB notes, Amazon is one). I would not assume what you got is a scam, most colleges have some relationship with a place that markets things like XL sheets to students, and you get mailings from them.

It is a marketing ploy, and a very poorly designed one at that since the majority of college dorms use twin xl sheets and practically all department stores advertise twin xl sheets for college dorms during the summer… I wouldn’t call it a scam; it’s just housing’s attempt at fundraising haha. It’s very easy to find the right size sheets. Just go to Target and look for twin xl. They do sell out since so many college bound kids are looking for the sheets, but the sheets aren’t “annoying to find the proper bedsheet for.”

On the other hand, the price ucr offers is just a bit overpriced, not ridiculously overpriced.

bed bath and beyond brand makes their sheets big. I freaked out thinking that the regular twin sheets i bought wouldnt fit, however after i measured it i had 3-4 inches to spare with the twin xl size taken into account. For reference, twin 39 x 70 twin 39 x 75

yeah, it’s pretty much a marketing ploy, I’ve seen the freshmen go through this every year now.
