The SCCA List: The Official Resource of School Openings

I’ve seen threads listing schools that may/may not have openings for the 2011-12 school year. While contacting these schools to inquire certainly couldn’t hurt, please note, unless these schools have a specific Rolling Admissions policy, the likelihood of learning of admissions opportunities at this point may be remote. Why? Because until April 10th, schools do not know their enrollment numbers since there may be more contracts forthcoming. Although these schools may not garner much attention on CC, I would imagine that many have witnessed year-over-year application increases. George School, for example, has experienced a 30% increase in apps.

The Good News: The SSAT publishes a list each year that details all member schools that have openings. This may be more useful that cold-calling. The Bad News: The list for the school year is not yet available; presumably for the reasons I’ve stated above regarding the April 10th enrollment deadline.

I’d encourage you to bookmark this link and refer to it often to see if the new school year link is posted. In the interim, here’s some language from the SCCA page:

SCCA List: Schools Currently Considering Applicants
Some families begin the admission process much later than others. Consequently, many schools are not fully enrolled by the spring deadlines.
Students and school administrators use the SCCA List to locate independent day and boarding schools with current admission and program openings.
Each listing provides current openings and contact information, including mailing address, phone/fax numbers, and e-mail address.
The 2010-2011 SCCA List is now posted and includes openings for:
• Summer 2010
• Fall 2010
• Winter/Spring 2011
