"The Scholar" reality TV show?!

has anyone else seen the previews for this new reality TV show called “The Scholar”? they pick 10 deserving individuals and the winner gets a full ride at the college of THEIR CHOICE! i’m sure they are all deserving but jeez! will this be the first time ever that a student gets to actually pick their ideal college without it being the 1960’s or being thrown into the current unrelenting pool of equally “deserving” admissions applicants that everyone else has to endure? i’m sure this show will peeve college hopefulls everywhere. truly outrageous. the funniest thing is that i know i’ll succumb to watching it. thoughts?

I'm pretty sure that they win a full tuition scholarship to the school that they have been accepted to and have chosen to attend. I don't think that they get first dibs on any college in the country. Thus, they win the equivalent of four years of tuition, room and board, fees (books, computer, laundry, activities, etc.), and probably airfare.

well on the commercial they say "the college of their choice".

Check the website.

A friend of mine did the show and I know where she ended up. Whether or not she actually won the show, I do not know.

I think "college of their choice" means "college to which they were already accepted (and now can attend, thanks to the TV show)." Therefore, it is the college of their choice, not the college of the producers' choice or someone else's choice. I can't see every college everywhere allowing a crackpot reality show to pick an admit for them.

college of the producer's choice? i just assumed that they made sure the kids had great SAT's, GPA, etc. and then put them on the show. whatever.

where did she end up?

One of the contestants is the valedictorian of a public high school in my school district. I don't know him personally and I have not met him, but one of my friends has described him as a "geniusssss." But, then again, how reliable that assessment is remains to be seen. shrug

TTG

I wanna get on there :( LOL

I thought that they get a full scholarship to the college of their choice.

When some one says you get money for the college of your choice, it doesn't mean you can go to any college in the world, it just means you can apply that money to which ever school you end up at. That said, all of these students are very, very qualified and would probably get in to "the college of thier choice," so its a moot point. They ran an article about the show a while back in my school newspaper because one of of the judges is a Cal admissons officer, and it looks like it might be pretty interesting.

I am not going to release where my friend ended up because it would ruin part of the show and I am not willing to do that. I can tell you that she ended up at a very good school.

No, these kids have already been accepted to these schools, the show will help them win some money. The top price is $240K and all the contestants get $50K. They pick the contestants, usually from the pool of lower socio-economic background.

I'd be mighty happy with just the 50K going towards college!

yes, the people who are saying that the scholarship is for the school that has accepted them and to which they are going are correct.

Btw, getting on this show was very challenging, my best friend's mom is the producer, and she had us watch tapes from several of the kids they were considering. They went through many interviews and other weeding out processes. Yes, they are all from poor backgrounds, and the competitions they will be doing are gonna be very hard, I read over their descriptions, and I dont think i could do them.

Also, saying what school the kid is going to won't ruin the show. That has nothing to do with it. For the kids who had gotten in early, my friend's mom would tell us where they were going.

They'll also win like laptops and other **** like that.

i'm definitely not saying your lying iwannabe_brown and everyone else, but i find it really funny / against all odds how everyone's saying "i know a person on the show", "i know the producer of the show", etc.

when is this show on?

"For the chance at a full ride to the college of their choice, ten qualified high school seniors from economically disadvantaged backgrounds -- who might not otherwise have an opportunity to attend one of America's top universities -- will compete for a full scholarship, a prize that could be worth as much as $240,000. They will have to demonstrate excellence in the areas of academics, leadership, creativity and community service, while facing sudden-death oral exams defending themselves to an Ivy League scholarship committee."

-This show sounds like nonsense to me; most, if not all of the top colleges in the U.S., guarantee to meet students demonstrated need 100%, so to say that the students “might not otherwise have an opportunity to attend one of America's top universities” is ridiculous. This show seems like an attempt by ABC to capitalize on America’s ranking-obsessed society.
