The Scholars on ABC

Shoot, my daughter took level Biology ("arts and crafts biology") and she knew all the answers.

hey guys, i just saw an episode of the scholars where they had the biology showdown, after watching that, i was like wow, this show is scammed!!!
those pointdexters with 1550+/1600 where answering questions like "how many chambers does the heart have?" give me a break.
and the last question "what does RNA stand for?" seriously, even in 1st year intro bio, they don't ask sissy questions like that, not even in basic bio.
that show is scammed people, but i am still happy for Scott(i think he should win) who won the showdown
I missed it. :(

dude, have you guys thought that maybe some of those kids are CCers? that they might be here right now.

but they are still retarded questions except for the art history round where I was like who the *@#$ is that

how many people worldwide do u think know about and go to this site??

I was expecting some good competition from this show, but it's turned out to be very disappointing. As for the questions on biology, and the Art History Quiz as well, they were unbelievably easy. It showed the kids studying for hours, but all you needed to win that biology showdow was a tiny bit of common sense. Although I'm rooting for Scot, there are so many more deserving people out there. I'm sure CC is teeming with real geniuses who truly need financial help.

Also, I thought these kids were supposed to be "economically disadvantaged"? Davis's parents make 140,000, yet he's whining about not being able to pay for college. There are people out there who really can't afford to pay. Davis, on the other hand, doesn't want to give up buying his pretty pastel polo shirts.......give me a break

Where'd you find out that he was rich?

The art history was very hard for me, because I have never taken an art history (or an art class) in high school. But the bio was a joke. I took regular level bio in freshman year and I still knew the answers! Gerald being a bio prodigy with excellent AP scores!! yeah right

bluealien,

On last night's episode scot went around asking everyone about how much their family makes. Davis said that combined his parents make about 140,000, but between their two car payments and his brother's private school, they couldn't "drop 40 thousand" a year.

i think gerald is the dumbest one. 3.91 GPA and "school mascot" are his accomplishments.

i actually like davis, hes the best looking one on the show and gets his karma

Well....I'm not going to say right away who is the smartest or the dumbest (or stupidest ;) ), but I felt sorry for Max because he didn't even have a biology teacher. I too want Scot to win

girlfriendmb, I like Davis too, and I can't deny he's good looking. I just meant that 140,000 a year did not seem to be as someone who is "economically disadvantaged"

They're prolly making this show appeal to the avg. American, you know? And we all know how smart the avg. American is, right?

yeah scot and jeremy aren't economically disadvantaged...jeremy said he wasn't poor enough to get money thrown at them....so whats the point to this show if the real economically disadvantaged gets need based money all the time?

I think scot is one of the few that is truly economically disadvantaged. He lives in the middle of nowhere, and I think he said something like his dad makes less than 50,000 in 3 years combined.......I too, am rooting for him to win. He was my favorite from the start.

there is another show called Beauty and the Geek. It's pretty sad. There is actually one guy who i think really is a geek..the other guys are just normal people i think who aren't emptyheaded dumbasses like the girls. It's pretty sad.
Dude, I watch that show. Yeah, most of the guys are normal guys who are maybe what those hott girls would consider nerds, but they are the kind of guys/wimps you see everyday and half of them are even kind of hott. And that short one is only there because he's really short. The only one who is the epitome of what it means to be a geek is that big lipped "I don't how to massage. OW! That wasn't a massage, that was trying kill me. You're a size zero? That means you don't exsist! OH, check out my zany dance moves! I'm so mad I screwed up at that one part even though we are still a shoo-in to win!"

Okay now you have GOT to be kidding me about missing the epidermis questions. Holy... if this is what america considers 'brightest students' the America needs to be EXTREMELY CONCERNED! ANd please don't tell me the asian kid was the one who missed it. I read his myspace/xanga thing and he doesn't seem THAT retarded.

I have the most respect for Scott. Full time job, 4.0 GPA (even though home schooled), black belt, 1580 SAT (according to tv)
Is it really that hard to get a 4.0 when you're home schooled? But having a full time job is... worth a lot of props.

i actually like davis, hes the best looking one on the show and gets his karma
Are you a girl? Then of course you like Davis, especially if you shop at Ambercrombie and whatnot. And if getting 140k/yr is a disadvantagement then I really wish I was on that show, too! I'd represent the CCers in here.

Maybe they'll have this show next year and WE should audition!

Everyone loves Scot. Go Scot! But for some reason I'm really into the Melissa girl.

yes im a girl, i don't shop there, but he dresses nice like hes going on a little date, so cute

whats the asian kid's xanga thing? Well, actually i sympathize with the middle class people who aren't THAT poor but not rich either. It kind of sucks to be us because we're not gona get any significant need based financial aid and we really don't have the money to pay 40k a year. Especially if you live in an area with high cost of living like NY. 140k isn't alot living in these kind of places, especially after all the taxes, courtesy of Bush's tax cuts which basically put us in the same tax brackets as multi-millionares. THe true economically disadvantaged people...they would have gotten enough money through FA anyway so they won't really need this scholarship. 50k and 100k isn't really that much of a difference, especially after the income is fixed by taxes. yet, they make a HUGE differnece in college FA whereas the former would get pretty much full FA and the latter would get basically nil.

anyways, i like melissa..she seems like a really smart and assertive girl. Scot and MAx are good too..I like Gerald also; I don't really know his bg but he seems like a guy who would get things done. I felt bad for the asian guy..he got picked last for the team thing =/. I think the people there aren't necessarily the smartest kids in the nation or the most deserving...alot of it has to do with photogenicity (is that word?), how well they look on TV, etc. Remember, the show has to make money and the only way they will do that is to have pretty people viewers like to watch on it.

Why are 4/10 of the contestants black? 2/3 of the admissions counselors?

These kids obviously come from ****ty schools. Max's school doesn't even offer Bio. How can a school not offer BIO?

What did a cheerleading competition have to do with ANYTHING?

i think it's pretty clear how african americans are favored in admissions, i am not that they are less intelligent, i mean i have met my share of really smart african americans, even the girl on the scholars, the black one, who won the showdown twice, she is extremely intelligent, that's why i don't get why they get advantages over students of other races, especially asian(chinese+indian). i mean look at the ppl competing and the ivy reps. as one of our posts pointed out, 2/3 of the ivy council are black, and 4/10 contestants are black, obviously the african american population is taking away the multicultural diversity from the top schools, i mean i only saw 1 asian dude!!! on that whole show, what is ABC trying to pull here huh? and the ivy admissions, if there are too many asians dominating your school population, where is the asian judge?
this doesn't make any sense!!
