I realize that Penn is clearly the most bashed ivy on these boards. I really do not why this is. I think it is a wonderful school, and always has been.

Northwestern is very underrated as well.

Wash U is clearly bashed on here too.

Schools that are completely overrated on these boards are UChicago and Duke, among others, such as Vanderbilt and Emory.

I will admit that Northwestern often doesn't get the credit it deserves on this board.. and is an excellent school!

I wouldn't go as far as to say Duke is overrated on this board.. there are people who like to take a jab at Duke.. just read some of the posts around here!

mmmm...i would actually think that its more like this:

Bashed openly:
-Penn (yup i dont know why.)
-Any LAC by a university fan.
-Any University by a LAC fan.
-Tufts (ever wonder where "tufts syndrome" came from?)
-Any Ivy league school that isnt HYP.

Bashed in the closet:
-Caltech (smart but antisocial=i dont wanna go there.)
-MIT
-NW (not sure why.)
-UChicago
-ALL Ivy Leagues
-Any school that ivy league hopefuls apply to as a safety.

Praised openly:
-ALL Ivy Leagues (screw you all, you hypocrites.)
-Duke
-The UC's

Praised in the closet:
-USC (the surrounding neighborhood is crap on ice. but still...)

It's human nature for people to support the schools they go to.. and have some sort of negative feelings towards schools that reject/waitlist them or ones people consider "beneath them".

I'm wondering why people think these schools are bashed unfairly. I'm guessing "NUGrad" has it out for Chicago :-P

I think any school that has the "Ivy Not Really" tag attached to it is attacked too unfairly for being a "wannabe." These schools include but are not limited to WashU, Hopkins, Vanderbilt, Emory, Tufts, and Rice.

As has been pointed out many times before, these schools tend to be more highly esteemed regionally (I'm told that in some areas in Texas, it's either Harvard or Rice or you're out of your mind) . I know a lot of brilliant-brilliant, interesting, excited, happy kids who attend each school I mentioned, and in many cases, they turned the Ivy down rather than vice versa, either because they didn't want to deal with what they perceived was "snobbery" or they wanted to get away from the Northeast.

've never actually seen UChicago or Duke bashed.

That is the point. Both are very overrated.

Using Hawkett's persistent sat comparisons

Northwestern 1320-1500
UChicago 1320-1530

There is no statistical different. The only noteworthy difference is that Northwestern has a much lower acceptance rate and a more normal environment for most people. But just b/c it is now ranked so high, people automatically assume its like a different school.
