The Search for the Usefulness of Portugese

I might consider taking Portugese, but is it useful for anything? I won't even consider re-taking boring Spanish...but I might take Portugese if there is sufficent reason to study it.

portuguese is pretty cool. mainly used in portugal and brazil. if u like the hot brazilian girls, take it. also lot of german women in brazil are models.

Hmmm....are there any literary reasons to learn it? With Japanese there's always an unlimited supply of children comics, videogames and cartoons to keep the language-drills from becoming to wearisome...

Cidade de Deus is an excellent movie.

Brazil has booming agribusiness and tourism sectors which make it a potentially profitable language to learn. There are also more Portuguese speakers in Latin America than Spanish speakers.

It's also good for international business. Brazil is a huge part of the Latin American economy.

If you are interested in Brazil or Portugal, than take it.

If you find yourself in the oil business in the future, either as a chemical/systems engineer or something else, Portuguese will be extremely useful. Angola has huge oil reserves, most of which haven't been exploited, and just coming out of a 27-yr long civil war, is poised to become Africa's largest oil producer in the not-too-distant future.
Brazil, which also has fast-growing economy, is experiencing a boom in the construction and manufacturing sectors, and Portuguese will be extremely useful in order to take full advantage of all the opportunities that will be available.
Mozambique is gaining ground in tourism, and also on several Lusophone islands, a knowledge of Portuguese will be helpful.
There also is a sigficant Portuguese-speaking population from Brazil working in the Japanese auto-industry.

Brazilian music like Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso is reason enough! Casinos in Macao, studying abroad in awesome places like Rio de Janeiro or Lisbon. Plus, it's just a fun language.

Ah I'm going to Portugal soon. Thats reason enough. Pretty people I heard.

There are a lot more useful languages to learn if you are already going to be putting in the time and effort to master a language. It's your choice though- so go ahead if you want. It really depends on your career field if a language is going to be useful or not. Knowing Russian living in Texas isn't going to give you much, whereas knowing Spanish would give you a definite advantage.

The search continues?

oh come on dude.... please stop bumping 1+ year old threads. You made me type that whole response for nothing!! He's probably fluent in Portuguese by now!
