The Skiing-Snowboarding Feud

Poll: which will you be doing when you get to Dartmouth? Any animosity for one or the other? Anyone bat for both sides?

Also, what's so great about snowboarding anyway (you can tell which side I'm rooting for)? It makes me feel... unbalanced.

Skiing...haven't done much snow boarding, but skiing feels like less of a contact sport.

Snowboarding ... it's much more challenging, and it definitely looks cooler.

Joey

I had a bad experience with snowboards...I will be skiing.

skiing. No negative feelings against snowboarders, unless they crash into me. But if a skiier crashed into me, I'd dislike him too.

o bloody hell, SNOWBOARDING ROCKS!!

greatest sport ever....

and...

i<3dartmouth

Skiing, completely. Nordic, that is.

o SWEET! i'm a junior member now!!

and...

i<3dartmouth

I learned to snowboard at Dartmouth! Its a blast, but when I went out west this week I was wearing skis every day

Skiing for me; I have this irrational fear of snowboarders being out-of-control.

Skiing...

Has anyone else had the experience of snowboarders being real jerks? It seems that whenever I ski, all the snowboarders are out to get me or something- they cut me off, bump into me, etc etc.

yes. one once gave me a concussion. doesn't mean they're all bad though lol

i love skiing, and snowblading too. i'd rather not spend my day on the slopes with my a s s on the ground every five minutes, whether to stop or to strap in/out. still, watching them tear up the terrain park is pretty cool, and many of those tricks can't be done on skis lol

How close is Dartmouth to the nearest ski lodge or snowboarding place?

oh boy, King! 2 away from a hundred!!

I think that for my 100th post I should say something really profound......

Damn, I got nothing!!!

Dartmouth owns a skiway and something like 25 miles of hiking trails (or maybe it's 200... something ridiculous, anyway). About 20 min. from campus

haha King, that was awesome.

Killington's close too, right?

"Skiing for me; I have this irrational fear of snowboarders being out-of-control." - gracilisae

Oh, it's not irrational at all. They are out of control - without a doubt.

Are there any XC skiers here?

Skiing...
I have some animosity for snowboarders though. My biggest problem with them is that they are much harder to control when you are learning than skis. My teammate got hit by a beginning snowboarder who was out of control and broke his wrist. Not cool. Second, snowboarders always complain whenever there is a flat traverse or any hiking, or any moguls. When snowboarders use their edge to descend anything steep, they push all the soft snow towards the bottom of the hill, leaving a hard surface on top for anybody else on the run.

My final problem with snowboarders is that they always assume that their sport is so challenging. The reason why most of my snowboarding friends became boarders is that they couldn't ski in the first place. You can become a "good" snowboarder with only a year or two worth of riding, whereas it takes most skiers many many years before they are able to tackle any kind of challenging hill. Good skiing technique is the result of years worth of practice and experience. I personally wouldn't find it as satisfying to pick up a sport and after a year be going down the toughest stuff there is to offer.

The fact is, boarding is simply inferior to skiing. I'm not saying that boarders are bad people; I'm just saying that snowboarding isn't in the same league as skiing. That's not to say that there aren't good things about boards; they look like a LOT of fun in fresh powder, and you can't beat them in the terrain park. Also, modern parabolic ski design owes too much to snowboards for me to hate them that much.
