The Social Ivy

I've often heard Penn called, "the social ivy."

While that is great and all, I think it would be helpful if some current students could describe Penn's social life in detail. What goes on in Spring Fling? How good are the frat parties? What is the dating scene like? Where do students go to chill? What are the best places to eat out in Philly, why? What are the main draws of Philly? Whatever, you know Penn. Run with it. If we can have all of your personal anecdotes on this thread, I think that would be very helpful to prospective students.

I am a sophomore in a frat so I can give some background.

1) Spring fling
This is one of the best times at Penn. Thursday night there are many organized parties at clubs in the city, which are well attended. Friday during the day people start partying early, and head over the quad to hang out, chill (if the weather is good) and listen to the various student bands that attend. It is very well attended, the university is very chill to all the people drinking and enjoying the festivities. Friday night there the concert which is well attended (last year the main act was akon, this year its kid cudi and snoop dogg). Saturday during the day is the same, and on friday and saturday nights there are tons of frat and other parties around campus. Not only the best carnival type weekend in the ivy league but it competes as one of the best college weekends in the country. people come from all over to live it up at fling!

2) Frat parties. As a freshman they are relatively open if you are female, or a male who associates with more females than males. There are a lot of frats and you can find the scene that suits you. If you can’t find a decent party it would be your fault - there are good parties on most weekends.

3) Dating: typical college hook-up culture but like any school you can find people into various things. there are good looking people here if you keep an eye out, but remember a lot of us have the ivy league confidence/arrogance

4) chill: most underrated part of penn is the BYO (bring your own booze) restaurants in philly. if you drink or not, its great to get together with friends and get a great dinner. many restaurants are cheap where you can eat for 20-30$ all in. also there are plenty of places on campus. philly is a decent city too. nothing compared to boston/miami/ny however there are interesting things to do

ask any penn student, they will basically agree that penn is a great school where you get a solid education, meet cool and interesting people, will get a good job/ get into a good grad school and have a sick time. you might have more fun going to certain other schools (umiami or arizona state or something) but penn is the best balance out there between work and play

feel free to ask other specific questions. im on this board to dispel myths about wharton but ill check this out too
