The social life REALLY SUCKS?

Does the social life really suck that much? Im from NYC so ..

No, it does not. The funny thing is, its always the nerds who complain about the social life while sitting on their computers typing up their latest "rants" or yelling about ugly girls when they are sitting there with their ugly friends.

Luckily these people do not go to parties (of which there are plenty on campus every friday/saturday with much more at Pitt).

Luckily these nerds are the minority as most people are pretty normal and though shy, very friendly and can be wild. There are no parties on the weekdays though but seriously I doubt any top school would party on the weekdays.

The city of Pittsburgh is really awesome and it is the nation's 2nd largest college town after Boston. The social life here is definitely better than some other top schools (cornell for one).

Oh, I never knew that. What are some colleges around CMU?

right next to it is--really next to it--is University of Pittsburgh, and Carlow college and the city is within reaching distance.

The main two are:

U.pittsburgh (HUGE party scene and guess what? Their campus is half a block away from ours and actually overlaps our campus on some parts).

Dusquene (Hottest girls.. ever? They usually come to Upitt and CMU parties by bus. They are almost all white and some of them preppy).

The rest include http://www.thecollegecity.com/college_profiles.htm

"They are almost all white and some of them preppy"

are they nonexistent at CMU?

Well you can check CMU's racial distribution but on campus white people are definitely the majority with asians as the other racial group.

I know the stats show different but I swear white ppl and asian ppl seem to make up 99.99999% of the campus. Also a lot of asians are white-washed and are seen more as white people than minorities. The rest kind of hang out together.

so no FOBs--fresh out of the boat?

No, I'd say the asian community is half split between white-washed and FOBS :)

Is there an option for accepted students to spend a friday or saturday night on campus? If I get accepted, I'd like to do that. (My fingers are crossed!). I wish I knew someone there so I could stay with them.

Yes it's called a sleeping bag weekend. They are extremely fun and helpful and they are open for prospective(not accepted yet) and accepted students.

Check this website for information: http://my.cmu.edu/site/admission/menuitem.62f95eafef4982c019300710d4a02008/

ugh, i hate white washed asians. >_<

hey monkeegirl, are you at cmu or an applicant to cmu?

i dont mind white washed asns.

The website doesn't lie about our diversity. You really can find any kind of person here from jocks to nerds to indians to europeans etc.

I'd prefer white-washed asians to asians who I can't even understand and then they giggle and turn red whenever I talk to them.

PS: I'm pretty preppy white so my definition of a white-washed asian is an asian person who actually has white friends and speaks ENGLISH always even when surrounded by other asians.

yeah. they are not culturally challenged and do "normal" things

Do you go to bars/clubs/shows in Pittsburgh much? How's the nightlife? I know it won't compare to New York City, but is it decent?

And the "Sleeping Bag Weekend" doesn't seem to have dates in the spring after applicants get there decisions. Will CMU invite accepted students for something similar? Errr...this brings up another question - do most schools invite you out to do something after you're accepted?

Every friday and usually saturday I go out partying. There are many parties including
1. Upitt parties
2. Random house parties
3. Frat parties (go here a lot)
4. Cozumel (main club in Pittsburgh)

There are parties (on avg 5-6 that I know about) every weekend and perhaps many more that I do not know about near Upitt and stuff. All I know is, walk on the streets during 2am or so and you'll see all kinds of drunken Upitt and CMU ppl.

McDonalds downtown is FILLED with drunk (and not drunk) college kids around 1-3am. When i say filled, I mean PACKED. You have to wait in line for a GODDANG CHEESEBURGER OMFG. Luckily the places in Pittsburgh know about the college students and open way late and McDonalds for example even offers burgers until 5am before switching to breakfast.

If you go to CMU, you'll find that every friday and saturday they have a movie on campus in the Mconomy room which is ONLY 1 dollar. These movies usually come out a week or so after the movie releases on big screen.

We even got MAJOR controversy for showing the world's most expensive porno, Pirates, in McConomy. You have to be over 18 for the porn but when it's a normal movie like Brokeback mountain or Star Wars, no ID is required. All these movies are just a dollar for CMUs students.

The night life is not comparable to NYC and the city dies on weekdays after a certain time. However, PIttsburgh's crime rate is the lowest (some kinda stat like that) and on weekend nights you'll only see college students walking around (which is very cool) as sometimes my friends and I run full speed on the streeets (no cars) with other drunk college kids.

The parties are pretty fun here as the frat parties are just across the street from New House, Morewood, and Mudge. All parties and clubs including Upitt is within walking distance and those that are not offer free buses.

PS: The reason they call it a SLEEPING BAG SUNDAY is because if they allowed visitors on Friday/Saturday, they'd probably be out partying and drinking (which would really scare off the parents of these prospective students).
