The Summer

I'm just curious what HSLers summer plans are.

I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing, but I'm considering a few summer programs:
UChicago RIBS
Duke TIP Creative Writing at Ghost Ranch
Duke TIP Institute of Human Genetics
Duke TIP Biological Diversity Program in Costa Rica

Has anyone done these? Or heard much about them?

I might look at some generic pre-college programs at colleges as well. I want to get into some genetics research, but I think I'll have to put that off for awhile until I get some better background.

Volunteering, hanging out with friends and a random family vacation will probably consume my summer aside from a possible summer program. Maybe hit up a concert or two. So, what are you doing this summer?

I’m actually working at the science camp for pay, volunteering at my local library, and losing weight this summer. My parents are considering not going on vacation this year, which is amazing so that I can actually rest instead of being cramped in a car forever!

Sent from my Droid Incredible 2

I’ve applied to TASP, and I’ll probably apply to CURE and the Senate Page program, and possibly a few research internships just to see if/where I get accepted. Otherwise, I’ll be volunteering all summer.

Hopefully I’ll be selected to go to Girls State, as well. :)

Summer precalc class
supervisor job ~60+ hours a week

I’m also planning on visiting some colleges.

1 week Economics for Leaders program - basically super intensive economics class with college credit

Internship at some business, still TBD where at this point

Playing tennis and teaching tennis (for money and as a volunteer) when I can fit in the time…

Aah almost forgot, I’m going on a week long trip to OC, NJ with my friend.

I can’t wait :(

How do you guys get jobs that are just over the summer?? i want to, but I definitely cannot continue working once school starts up again.

dfree124 I really wanted to do a program like that, it looks so interesting! But I’m not here for the dates when it runs :(

dfree, maybe I’ll see you ;)

Wow, all these academic summer programs! I’m going to the Phillipines for 3 weeks to visit famiy.
When I come back I’m probably just gonna chill and volunteer at the local animal shelter.

609 are you applying for EFL?!?

Littlebluebird - two years ago I worked maintenance at a country club, and last year I worked as a camp counselor. It isn’t hard if you look for things that are strictly during the summer, as it’s expected that work will end once the summer is over. It shouldn’t be too hard to find a normal job, even if it’s just for the summer either. During the interview you can tell the employer that you will need to quit once the summer is over, it should be fine.

EDIT: 609 Now I see that you were probably referring to my trip to Jersey, lol.

I have applied/will apply to seven internships, but they’re so selective I doubt I’ll get any of them. If I don’t, I’ll probably just pick up a third job and make a bunch of money. Or do the kaiser internship at the local hospital.

Research at hospital lab. Volunteering at same hospital.
Physics & Calc III at community college.
^ All of that, each day.

At the end of the summer, hopefully a biomed program. (Plus research, stilllll)

I just applied to the Senate Page program. If I get into that, I might go to a theatre camp, creative writing, or playwriting camp. After that, I’ll be writing press releases for a sports-broadcasting company.

Might apply to a few other places in March, just to see where I get in.
