Im currently a freshmen at binghamton and I notice some people are having doubts applying here or don't know enough about the school. Im specifically making this thread to answer any questions you guys might have about the school. So if your still not sure whether or not you want to apply here dont hesitate to ask me an informative question.

Hmm alright, well, what's your major? What were your credentials? How's the (merit) aid? How's the social life? Haha, should be enough to get ya started :P

Your major and minor are undeclared until your junior year... but im on the path for a political science major and a cinema minor :).

I had a 1240 SAT score
3.7 GPA with 8 AP classes
Rank top 15%
President of 2 clubs with numerous other activites.. Varsity Bowling + Baseball, Mock Trial Prosecutor.. yearbook editor etc. etc.

The Merit aid differs with every student but if you have a 1400+ your guaranteed to get merit and you might be offered a spot with the Binghamton Scholars program where you get preference for basically anything and everything on campus.

The Social life depends on what kind of person you are.. typically though the bars and frat parties downtown are packed on the weekends. Its a small party school u could say.

Hi Thanks for your offer to help.

Aside from knowing early, is there any advantage (or disadvantage) to apply early action?

Can it hurt your chances of getting in?

1390 SAT
30 ACT
3.7 unweighted
Rank within top 6%

Thanks

I'd say theres an advantage to apply to early because then you get your residence forms earlier and if you didnt know.. the new mountainview community was built this fall in Binghamton and the earlier you get your forms and put down preference the earlier you choose.

I wish I sent my forms in earlier because Mtnview is better than living in a hotel, honestly. Its absolutely stunning.. and im sure its probably the newest and probably the best housing you will find and most colleges in NY.

Apply early, it will never hurt your chances.

With your stats... your 90% in. Unless you have something outstanding you shouldnt worry.

Does Binghamton have a strong pre-med program? Also, can you talk more about the honor program and is it hard to get in it?

Here are my stats:
SAT: 1430
GPA: 3.82 unweighted
7 APs by the time I graduate
Pretty good extracurriculars (senior editor of yearbook, etc...)

thanks

Thank you!!!

Binghamton is mostly known for its psychology, pre med/science programs and liberal arts programs.

The honors program is called "Binghamton Scholars"... after you get accepted the school will contact you and send you forms about it... there are approximately 80 students in this program. The people i know in the scholars programs had around a 1440 and a 4.0. Its extra work but its more prestige and you get preference for alot of things.

StarburyMarbury87: you should have a really good chance at getting in.

Thank you Afireinside530. I have a couple more questions, if you don't mind. Do I apply separately to the honors program, or do I apply straight to binghamton and then to the honors program? Also, does binghamton offer any scholarships based on merit, and if so, what are the requirements?

You apply to binghamton first and then the school will notify you about whether or not you will make scholars. The school takes the top 80 people so you cant really apply, u just need good qualifications.

Gaining scholarships at binghamton based on merit might be hard. The price is alreadyy heavily discounted and you would have more luck getting federal aid to attend binghamton rather than merit.

However, I do know athletes get scholarships and one of my friends in scholars got a 3,500 a year scholarship based on merit to attend binghamton. Its hard to get I think, just make yourself known to the school and it will help.

3.2unweighted

writing 610
physics 550 (really low i know!)

highest curriculum available at our school
lax 4 years
multiple clubs and extra curricular

the only thing that bothers me is my gpa because i have 1 D on my record from AP Computer science, but i didnt drop it and brought it to a c+ by the next sem.....

fnyboy, you will probably get in. Id assume atleast a 75% chance. Good Luck :)

i'm scared to look online... I applied EA to Binghamton although i know there is a good chance I won't get in. Plus the fact that most likely they don't even care because they are like 3 weeks behind and this year they have so many apps... over 4,000! and from my school alone we contributed 60...
grr... well these are my stats... what do u guys think? I mean my friends think i have an okay/ good chance of getting in... yet again they are my friends...

3.3 gpa (but we have a weird grading scale.. for example a 94 is a 3.5) so with our grading scale it comes out to like an 88 or so... and it is a great trend up... 2.9 fresh 3.3 soph 3.7 jr

1240 sat (600 v, 640 m)

president of the intercultural club, but this club is also a service club because we help a lot of people at home and around the world

proud girl scout of 10 years... also earned my gold award by creating a literacy project (and of course a great essay topic :) )

Best of luck to all who applied, an congrats to those who go in!!!

is there a binghamton message board?

I might not have all that much money for college as I expected, so I have applied to SUNY Binghamton as a low cost alternative

Am I a strong enough candidate for the honors program? What makes honors so much harder? a second language?

doublelayer, you have a pretty good chance of getting in, its not a reach.. I wouldnt worry too much.

Cruiser, your basically accepted as long as everything is in on time. Ive met tons of ppl with 3.5s and 1300s that were accepted to binghamton.

Theres no messageboard for this school.. hence the reason i started this thread :)

However, cruiser, you might be too low for the honors program. The people i know in Binghamton scholars had 4.0s and 1400s... unless alot of ppl reject it, it might be hard to get into the honors college.

Honors is extremely hard because there are required classes and alot of extra required work.

any other questions? :)

:( today I got deferred from Binghamton.... Any smart ideas about how to turn my defferal to an accecptance?

remember mt stats are:

3.3 gpa (very competitive high school)
1240 SAT
president of intercultural club
Girl Scout for 10 years (won gold award, a national award)
Played soccer for 8 years
Amazing letter of rec

show them how interested you are.. maybe write them a letter or inform them of any recent clubs/awards. If Bing is your first choice or second one.. give them a visit.. it worked wonders for me.

i just got deferred EA from binghamton too... I was just wondering if theres anything else I can do differently:

SAT's: 1320 (660 M/ 660V)
GPA: 3.5ish (unweighted) very competitive school

Also senior year, i'm doing much much better, with around a 3.8-3.9ish unweighted. I probably was deferred cause of my extra cirriculars which were kinda weak... but not as if it were non-existant (did some community service, baseball team for 4 years, had a job for a year, etc etc.)

So any ideas? and are my chances still decent for regular admissions?

i just got in today
