Hey everyone,
the Yale Supplement is up on the Common App! Applying to Yale is suddenly feeling real!

For the information of all, essay and short-answer questions on the 2012 supplement.

– What in particular about Yale has influenced your decision to apply? Please limit your response to the space provided. (500 character limit)

175 character limit for each of these:

–What would you do with a free afternoon tomorrow?
– Recall a compliment you received that you especially value. What was it? From whom did it come?
–If you could witness one moment in history, what would it be and why?
–What do you wish you were better at being or doing?
–If you were choosing students to form a Yale class, what question would you ask here that we have not?

–You have already told us about yourself in the Common Application, with its list of activities, Short Answer, and Personal Essay. In this required second essay, tell us something that you would like us to know about you that we might not get from the rest of your application - or something that you would like a chance to say more about. Please limit your essay to fewer than 500 words.

–If you selected one of the engineering majors, please write a brief third essay telling us what has led you to an interest in this field of study, what experiences (if any) you have had in engineering, and what it is about Yale’s engineering program that appeals to you.

It’s quite like the last year’s app.

Isn’t it exactly the same as last year’s? And is the essay essentially asking for another common app personal statement type essay?

^^^Yes and yes.

Oh my I feel like a little kid with a piece of chalk and a massive sidewalk to draw the crap out of! HAHA. I love similes. But now the work beings. I wish you all the best of luck my comrades…see you on the other side! LOL.

Is anyone else rather disappointed that the supplement is EXACTLY the same as last year’s? I was hoping they would change up the short takes every year, especially since these are not the most insightful or unique questions out there.

We know that no one can fit an entire life story into two 500 word essays, and we don’t expect you to try. Pick two topics that will give us an idea of who you are. It doesn’t matter which topics you choose, as long as they are meaningful to you.

If I’m not applying to engineering…it’s only one essay, correct?

Yes if you are not going to major in any engineering course, you only have to write one personal statement, why Yale short answer and answers to the other short questions.

Ahh! I just finished the rough draft of my essay, now I’m wondering what sorts of answers they’re looking for in the short takes and “why yale” section?

At a Yale talk I recently attended, the representative mentioned Yale tying to expand its programs in engineering and sciences, as it is usually regarded as a more liberal arts-y school. And yet there’s another essay, another hurdle if you will, for prospective engineering students. I’m not at all interested in engineering, just found this interesting. Any thoughts?

I think most schools have an extra essay for engineering majors :/. Well a lot of the ones I’m applying to. It does add another hurdle if they are trying to attract science-y students… But hey, less competition for me :P
