The T

For those students here, about how much do you spend on the T per month while living on campus? Do you use the Charlie card or a monthly pass instead?

Thanks,
Sue

I use the Charlie Card. I probably spend about $10-$20 a month, sometimes more, sometimes less. If I had the monthly pass, I’d definitely use the T more, but I don’t mind walking. You can always use a CharlieCard for the first month or so, see how much you use, and then upgrade the next month to a monthly pass. You might want to get a monthly pass in the winter months too; I tend to use it more then.

What about all those passes the school sells through the student link? I see all these options but they dont explain what they do… is there somewhere that explains the passes that the school sells? Is it better to buy a monthly pass or one of the ones the school sells?

Monthly passes are what the school sells. You get a new one each month for the semester. Unless you use the T a lot, you’ll likely save money using a Charlie Card that you load with a credit card or cash.

If you live in West Campus, I’d recommend getting BU’s Semester Pass. Believe me, there’ll be days in the winter where you will NOT want to trek the mile down to main campus. As for myself, I’ll be living in Stuvi2 and will be getting the Zone 1A semester pass. It’s a charlie ticket (not the card) that BU renews each month. The Zone 1A gives you access to all of Boston’s subways, buses, ferries, etc.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It sounds like using the Charlie Card at first is the way to go, at least until it’s clear how much the T will be useful.

Just so you know Mjm, the Zone 1A pass gives you access to all of the close-in areas Boston, Cambridge, etc. There are actually 7 more zones (8 total), but most (non-Mass resident) students don’t need to go there.

for freshmen, i would definitely recommend the CharlieCard. unless you have a job or internship far away off-campus that you need to get to on a regular basis, i highly doubt you’ll use a T pass often enough to make it worth its price.

in addition, the best way to learn about boston during your first semester is to walk everywhere. you’d be surprised how small and walkable the city is. i know some seniors who don’t know the biggest streets in boston because they take the T everywhere.

for easy travel along the BU campus, use the free BU shuttle bus: [The BUS | Boston University Shuttle](The BUS | Transportation Services).

what all the passes mean:

I’m an SMG student who will be living in West Campus(kill me lol) but would it be easier for me to walk to class or take The BUS. It says it only runs every 30 mins and I don’t know how reliable it will be. Is there a nearby T station or something?
Thanks for your help

Go find the BU interactive map on the website. There are T stops at every intersection on Comm Ave - it’s a trolley, above ground until near Kenmore Square. As for how you get there, it’s a 10 minute not that fast a pace walk so it depends on choice, weather, what you’re carrying, whether you see a train coming, etc.

The walk isn’t the best, but it’s about 15 minutes if you walk at a good pace. The BUS does leave reliably, but in the winter months it can be packed and sucks if you’ve been waiting outside for the bus only to find it full. There’s a T stop on both Babcock and Pleasant Street, which are both right outside west campus. T is not as reliable though, especially in the morning.
