The Tennis Thread

Monfils is playing Gulbis next. I think Gulbis has been playing pretty well this season. They both have an interesting playing style.

Gulbis isnā€™t as stupid as Monfils, so he should win easily, in three.

If heā€™s not too exhausted, Gael should win. He is the better player on dirt and Gulbis is a headcase. Should be a very entertaining match.

Watching Tsonga - Nieminen right now. Itā€™s an entertaining match so far. Both are hitting hard, crisp shots. ESPN is showing three live streams - they donā€™t have replay on the French so Iā€™m up early working on the 27 inch iMac with the tennis match on my other computer.

Tennis gods on Monfils side.

He lasted longer than I expected, but crashed out as I expected, winning the first two sets and then dying. Monfils.

And Raonic losing to a lesser version of himself.

Monfilā€™s knees must have been in pretty good shape to last this long.

I should check the weather over there. Itā€™s 93 degrees here right now - that would make for a tough match.

Raonic lost to Anderson. Another battle of the big guys. With those guys, itā€™s all about getting a break or winning in the tie-breaker. Though Raonic should have made it closer. I didnā€™t watch - was he doing the usual ā€œtalented guyā€ fail thing?

Typical Monfils. You cannot get far in a slam when you spend so much time on court.

Great win for Tommy - nice to see him and his short shorts back. :)

The only stakes left for me are Nishikori (to lose to Nadal in the round after his match tomorrow), Tsonga (to lose to Federer or if he turns into a godā€¦ to lose to Ferrer), and Simon (to lose to whoever doesnā€™t suck).

Also Serena, who appears to be going all the way :P

Serena, has she even work up a sweat yet!

What about the re-match of Noly and Grigor?

Eh, I think the last match was a strategic tank for the FO.

Still excited to watch it tomorrow though. Iā€™ll try to wake up at 5 to watch Nishikori, but thatā€™s definitely not going to happen.

I love the weekend because I can actually watch matches!

Nadal/Fog had tons of drama. I hope Nadal is dead tired against Kei in their match :stuck_out_tongue: And Kei is the first Japanese man in 75 years to get to round 4!
Happy to see Sam Stosur is finally doing something.

ā€¦

And now sheā€™s going to lose.

Nice win for my Tommy today - though it really was NID.

The women are all terrible. I canā€™t understand why anyone watches them.

I think that womens tennis was better before the modern age.

BTW, I do like Schiavoneā€™s style of play - definitely more art than power.

Iā€™m also amazed that Bartoli does so well when itā€™s obvious that she could stand to lose a bit more than a few pounds.

^ I think they were never very good. ;)

Have you ever played a female pro?

Whatā€™s that got to do with anything? Almost anyone is better than me.

Iā€™ve played with male and female pros. They may look like theyā€™re not very good at playing but itā€™s a lot different when theyā€™re on the other side of the court. Itā€™s just levels of the game.

Well of course it is. But I am comparing the WTA with the ATP. For most of the women itā€™s a miracle if they manage to hold serve. Even among the best. Itā€™s mind boggling.
