The Tennis Thread

Why does Murray’s US Open have an asterisk next to it? He beat the #1 player in the world in the finals. If Murray wins this year’s Wimbledon, he will again most likely have to beat the #1 player in the world.

In the simplest terms, there was basically a hurricane going on during the final.

I am a big Nole fan CSIHSIS, and as far as I am concerned, Murray won that game fair and square. Djokovic played well, but Murray was just better on the day. Hopefully, this year Nole will win Wimbledon and the US Open. He is favored to win both, but that does not mean much!

I think that Berdych would have had decent odds of beating Murray without the cyclone.

Given that the “hurricane” was happening on both sides of the net I don’t think Murray should get anything less than full credit for his Open win. One of the things that makes tennis so great is that there are so many variables through the tennis year, including surface and conditions. The winner of a particular event is that player who best handles everything thrown at him/her.

“I think that Berdych would have had decent odds of beating Murray without the cyclone.”

Agree. His ball toss in windy is very problematic.

But it is what it is and he would have choked away the final anyway.

I’m really enjoying this years Wimby. No American men cluttering up the schedule so ESPN is forced to show matches we wouldn’t see otherwise (and I don’t like watching on my computer unless absolutely necessary so.)

I’ve also been watching bits and bobs of TC evening broadcast. Comms don’t talk during points and prattle on about themselves - even Mac.

Tournament directors have leeway in whether or not to play in various conditions. There was a tornado watch in the area, there weren’t very many fans that showed up and proof that the conditions were ridiculous was that they postponed the other semifinal match.

There’s a lot of pressure to get the tournament finished by Sunday and tournaments will work as hard as they can to avoid having a Monday final. They tried to do that at the US Open but failed anyway. This is why you have the retractable roof at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. So that you can make your schedule at the end of the tournament.

Tournament officials have control over the surface and conditions. The amount of water on the clay courts at the French can determine how high topspin kickers bounce which can have an effect on outcomes. I’m a bit curious as to what changed at Wimbledon - dirt, grass, water - to result in so many early injuries. This sort of thing isn’t good for the game.

US Open is having a Sunday afternoon women’s final and a monday evening men’s final this year. It will probably rain and have to be played on Tuesday.

What they need to do desperately is tear down the monstrosity which is Ashe and build a real tennis stadium with a roof. They are spending a lot of money to rework Louis but not putting a roof on that, either, and building a new grandstand, also with no roof. So dumb. I have labor day weekend tickets and have been rained out more times then I can count.

Yup.

The USTC is built on relatively soft ground so retrofitting a sliding roof is not an option. Absolutely agree on the rain problems that the US Open has suffered through for many years.

I’ll be rooting for Haas tomorrow over Novak. I like upsets and I like come back stories.

What are your predictions on tomorrow’s matches?

Take that Chris Evert! We cannot stand her obvious Serena bias when commentating.

Serena lost?

Yes. Lisicki (sp?) beat her. Really good match. I think Lisicki just became my favorite woman player - such a great attitude.

That’s it, I’m officially done.

I might actually watch some of the women now that Serana is gone!

I went 15/16 with my picks but couldn’t be happier with my one miss. :)

Jmdp   :)

I know I said I was done, but I hope no one thought I’d actually stop watching.

Murray down two sets. This is like Christmas morning. Please. He’s so mad right now. I love it.

My H is looking at me like I’m a crazy lady as I dance a “hoping-for-Verdasco-victory” dance.

For the ladies, I think I will root for Lisicki to win Wimbledon.
