The Tennis Thread

Thanks emilybee. I got a USTA e-mail the other day that has some device that people can rent while at the Open to watch other ongoing matches so they can court surf from the comfy confines of Ashe.

^they’ve had that for awhile. I got one a few years ago at the American Express booth. You had to leave a pretty hefty deposit (refundable) but otherwise it was free. TBH, we didn’t use it much and it was one more thing I had to keep track of.

I’ll be rooting for Rafa. On the Women’s side, anyone but Serena.

So I went to the Open yesterday so, of course, it rained. I am going down tomorrow for Labor Day weekend and, par for the course, it is supposed to rain. Sigh.

Rain or not, I’m jealous of you, emilybee. My favorite match so far has been Victoria Duval over Sam Stosur. She has room for improvement, but there’s something so fun about watching a teenager exude so much excitement during and after a match. I was hoping James Blake could pull it out last night. I knew he couldn’t make it pass Wawrinka, but hoped he could get one more victory at the Open.

Once JB was up 2-0 it was NID he would lose in 5. Was a fun match to watch though, except for loud drunk deranged Ivo fan in front row.

As for Victoria, I am sure she is lovely but the commentators will make me hate her from listening to them tell me her “story” over and over over again.

They showed the loud drunk during the fifth set and you could hear him shouting on every point. Only good thing about that match (given the outcome) was that I thought I spied Todd Martin sitting on the front row of the backcourt. I always loved watching him play, particularly at the Open.

Ugh. They should never show these eejits on camera - it only encourages the next loud mouth to be even more obnoxious.

Yes, sure that was Todd - I saw him wandering around earlier at loose ends.

Found it amusing that announcers were chastising the crowd for rooting for Monfils against Isner. This isn’t the Davis Cup. People pay good money for seats and they can root for whoever they please American or not. Have to admit Monfils is a lot more interesting that the robot that is Isner.

I’m glad Isner had the last laugh! :D

I was happy to hear Killer thought it was a great atmosphere. Wish he was the only one in booth commentating.

“I was happy to hear Killer thought it was a great atmosphere. Wish he was the only one in booth commentating.”

Listening to Fowler and Gilbert gave you the impression there was an uprising in the streets and that they were reporting from the Middle East. Call me a commie, I like Monfils.

One last rant. The same commentators who say we should root for Isner because he is American pointed out that foreigners like Lendl were dull for the game. Boring is boring reagrdless of your passport.

Gilbert loves the sound of his own voice and Fowler is just stupid.

I wish I had recorded TC late night last night. Fred Stolle has been commentating.

And with that I’m off to weekend @ USO. Unless there are still decent day matches going on looks like I’ll have to be in Ashe tonight. First match should, at least be entertaining. Too bad it’s not an American playing Lleyton - I would wear my Fanatics t-shirt just to **** Gilbert off. ;)

I really like Monfils and was glad he got a set and kept it close. In the end, though, I am happy that Isner won. In my core, I have a hard time cheering against a USA player, but I don’t really LIKE some of them. I am not a fan of Serena, I think Isner is robotic (like straightshooter), and I am frustrated by Querry’s track record. I have high hopes for Sloane Stephens and Jack Sock, though! And there are some young players coming up (McHale and Duval). I am going to miss James Blake. I am hating Brad Gilbert in the booth; please stop talking (yelling) so much! Have fun emilybee; I hope the forecasters are wrong.

Gilbert comes up with the most idiotic nick names for everything. It’d be funny if he was being ironic but…no. His twitter makes me cringe.

I quote: “Isman” - annoying cuz there’s a player called Istomin, La Monf, “Rockem Sock” - seriously wth, “Mchales Navy”, “Genie in the bottle Bouchard”-UGH, “Penetta Pasta”

just stop ok.

I despise Serena. She is just miserable. I hate how she basically dominates and accrues titles because everyone else is just that bad. Henin, Clijsters, Venus (she’s an afterthought now), Hingis, Capriati etc. at least made it a good competition.

Very pleased to see Azarenka beat her during Cincy. Sharapova gets steam rolled every time she plays S Williams - the OG final was humiliating. 6-0, 6-1.

And her game is just sooo boring for me. Ball bash, ball bash, bash bash bash. Azarenka’s volley in the third set tiebreak was a thing of beauty.

Henin is perhaps my favourite modern player. Absolutely exquisite.

As a teen and young adult, Brad Gilbert was extremely arrogant. Haven’t been around him for decades but he hopefully matured and became a better person.

Nice to see Jack Sock get into round 3! We are friendly with his former junior doubles partner and his former junior partner’s family. Have been around Jack and his family on multiple occasions when they come out to CA. He is a great kid!

Ecouter, you forgot Sloan Ranger!

Jshain, BG is still an arrogant arse.

H decided he had to get in a run before we leave. Sigh. I have been ready to leave for hours!

I am at work and am checking scores on break. Sad to see that Ram lost after being up 2 sets to none. Bummer. The Americans are dropping quickly…

OMG Sloane Ranger is the absolute worst.

Liscki lost today and Na defeated Robson. I like Na, she has a fun personality. Duval lost - but she definitely took out a good player (though Sam is wildly inconsistent).

I hope Ivanovic defeats McHale. It’s sad to see her slumping.

Dear Nole had a horrible first set but pulled it out in three.

I feel you all about not wanting to root against your country. I really like Bouchard but Raonic is dull dull dull. He’s as much of a servebot as Isner.
