I had an interview for Cornell. It was very informal though the interviewer made notes while I was answering questions. Be well-prepared to answer questions pertaining to reasons for going to Cornell, goals, ECs, etc.
Wow you are a Harvard alum interviewer? Iām having my Harvard interview this Sunday!! Do you have any special tips or just the general?
Is something wrong if I havenāt received my ED interview yet?
I had my alumni interview for Yale yesterday. It was much easier than I expected. My interviewer was a middle aged male, class of 1988. We met at a local cafe in my town. He asked me to tell him about myself, and I explained the different activities I was involved in. He also asked me about a few issues concerning my school that have been in the newspaper recentely, he just wanted to know the studentās perspective on what was going on. Afterwords he asked me if I had any questions for him and he told me that if I ever had any other questions regarding Yale or New Haven I could feel free to email him. All in all I think it went quite well. If you have an interview, donāt be nervous, it was quite casual and just be sure to highlight your achievments.
I have an interview at Bard next weekend and I bought an outfit yesterday, but Iām concerned I might be a little overdressed? Or not? I donāt know. I think my interviewer will probably be an admissions officer, not an alumni, so I should be a tad more dressed? This is my first interview, so I donāt know what to expect. I think Iām going to wear black slacks with a casual jacket (similar to this but with a 3/4 sleeve: http://media.kohls.com.edgesuite.net/is/image/kohls/280493?wid=230&hei=230&op_sharpen=1) with a green shirt underneath and green flats.
Has anyone here had an interview at Bard? How was it? Iām just anxious about this, heh.
Hah! I have to laugh. Bard is the most casual of any schools we visited. My DDās interview was in a group, with an admissions dean, and the overall impression was that applicants were pretty secure in their appearance without making a big fuss. In that I mean no one really cared if one were dressed up or dressed down as long as they had had a recent bath! Enjoy your visit.
I love how you can always answer my Bard questions. Yeah, I expected it would be pretty casual so I was nervous about being overdressed, but I loved the outfit, heh.
The interview was in a group? Was that the IDP interview? How did that work?
No, not IDP, just a visit with an admissions information session (done by an admissions dean) and tour. Is yours for IDP??
My DD hadnāt completed the Bard app at the time of our visit and didnāt really want an interview before she decided if she liked the school or not. We hit five or six schools in one trip and only two held individual interviews, but they all insisted it was informative only, and not really a ājudgedā part of the admissions process, or required. I canāt see how it couldnāt help a good candidate though, so best of luck to you! I hope you get to enjoy a beautiful sunset from the Blythewood garden. Probably too cold for a swim at the waterfall though. Make sure you get to see everything you want, even if they tell you you canāt. For instance, we just went into the theater and asked nicely and a faculty member gave us an impromptu tour.
Your chosen outfit will be fine!
Yeah, Saturday is my IDP date, which means Iāll know next week if Iām in or not. Yikes! Iād love to see the performing arts center, itās so awesome on the outside.
Yeah, I really liked my Yale interview. Although some questions threw me off guard (I wasnāt expecting them), they werenāt too out of left field.
i had my interview for tufts this past weekend and it went really well. my interviewer was really nice and pretty laid back. It was pretty informal and we met at his house. The only question that i hadnt really thought about wasā¦ List 5 adjectives to describe yourself.
Good luck everyone!
I had a interview with U of Rochester and it went wellā¦
It was an alumn interview; however, I was able to talk to admission officer who was also present that day
my interviewer was really nice and told me a lot about the school
I really wanted to go to that college, so I knew a lot about the school
he seemed to be happy about how much I want to go thereā¦
I think the most important part of the interview is showing a lot of interest and being honestā¦
I had an interview with Rice on Sunday. it went great ask about ātell me about yourselfā and extracurricular activities.
I have an interview over the phone tomorrow. Itās my first (Iām a transfer student, btw)ā¦ so what should I expect? Iām really nervous about b/c I donāt really articulate myself well over the phone.
i dunno much about phone interviews.
I have my USC interview in Decemberā¦ has anyone had their USC interview? what questions were asked?
what should i wear?
I have an alumni interview for Connecticut College tomorrow.
I bought a long sleeved, turtleneck, brown dress that is about mid-thigh (about 4 inches about knee). Would this be acceptable to wear, granted I wear stockings and flats with it? I donāt want it to look too short.
Thanks.
roxana530,
Are you scheduled for Suburban Chicago? Because I had mine last week downtown. Anyway, hereās my experience.
When I went in, I figured it would be more informational, but it didnāt seem like it. The person that interviewed me was the Midwest Regional Director for the Office of Admissions. (What that means, I donāt know. Any clarification would be appreciated.) She came out to the waiting area, called my name. I shook hands with her; very nice lady by the way. She took me into the interview room where it looked like there were some alumni and other people interviewing other students. It seems like a luck of the draw who you get. Sat down at an empty table with her. She asked me about my high school and what I do there. From then on, it seemed a lot of her questions were based off my responses, not just standard read off the paper. For example, I told her about my experience as a student athletic trainer in high school and she kept asking questions based off that and my experiences like, (I also told her I was interested in medicine) āWas there a time during your student athletic training experience where you felt medicine wasnāt right for you?ā I also explained how it taught me to be a leader and the responsibility that came with it. She then asked how difficult it was to manage the respect you get with your peers and what are some things you like and dislike about the respect and responsibility. Of course, there were some of the standand questions like, āWhy do you want to go hereā and āWhat do you want to pursue and why?ā but a lot of it seemed geared towards what I said and talked about. At the end she talked about the school and general information along with asking if I had questions. The only part I seemed to fumble was when I worded a question to her asking about a pre-admission to their medical school where it seemed like I didnāt know they had a medical school when I know they do. lol
As for dress, I wore dress pants, dress shirt and a tie. So for you, whatever the female equivilant is.
My advice: be calm, relax, and enjoy the interview. If youāre asked about something you care about (like me with my student athletic training), be passinate when talking about it. You must have done the activities youāre doing now for a reason. Definately be honest about your responses. When she asked me why I wanted to go to USC, I honestly told her my biggest desire to go to USC was that Iād rather go to class where itās warm than walk from building to building in the freezing Chicago weather (along with I also wanted to be an A.T.S. for the Trojans.) She said she was glad I was being honest because a lot of students try to give an elaborate response which doesnāt seem genuine. IMO, they know you think USC is a good school, otherwise you wouldnāt apply. Whether it was a good response I gaver her, I donāt know, Iāll find out in April. Best of luck to you, even though both of us are competing for a spot. lol
I was wondering about what to wear for an interviewā¦ I know thereās variations in different interviews on what to wear, but I was wondering if anybody could give me a general ideaā¦ should I wear formal suits, or semi-formal?? Specifically, I wanted to know about the Harvard, Yale, and Brown interviewsā¦ Thanks!
My Yale interviewer called me during a Wednesday night and told me that he was from Yale and wanted to do an interview with me, this was like a week or two ago by the way. He asked me when I would be able to do one and we had it scheduled at 4:15 on Friday of that same week. I asked him if I should wear anything specific or bring anything like a resume. He told me that dress isnāt important because Iām coming from school. I ended up wearing a shirt with khaki pants like I always do. He then told me not to bring anything because heās not part of the admissions committee and was simply an alumni interviewing me. Thus, he doesnāt want to pretend like he could make the decisions or whatnot and told me not to bring a resume.
